Today I’m making pikliz, a spicy Haitian slaw we eat with everything. I love it fresh on eggs, sandwiches… you name it, it’s on there. Crunchy, spicy, full of flavor — and gut-friendly too. It’s so worth the try! INGREDIENTS • 1 small head of cabbage, shredded • 4–5 carrots, shredded • 1 red onion, thinly sliced • 1/3 cup white vinegar • 1/3 cup avocado oil • 2 Scotch bonnet peppers (or any spicy pepper you have — add more if you like it extra hot) • Salt to taste DIRECTIONS 1. Use a mandoline or knife to thinly slice the cabbage and onion. 2. Shred the carrots using a grater or food processor. 3. Add all ingredients to a large bowl and mix well. 4. Transfer to a glass jar or mason jar and press down gently. 5.   1. I think this may be the best Haitian and Caribbean spot in Miami. @manjayrestaurant has opened a new location in Doral, bringing their tasty, colorful food to a new part of town. If you like the flavors of the Caribbean and enjoy high-quality ingredients in your dishes, you want to come check out Manjay. Start off with the Caribbean Conch Fritters and the Steak Pitas. It’s no wonder they are favorites. Follow that up with one of their bowls. They have several ones on the menu and they come with two sides of your choice. We shared the Honey Jerk Chicken, Griyo (slow braised pork) and Coco Loco Shrimp. It’s hard to pick a favorite because they each had something that wowed us. It all goes back to the intensity of the flavors in each bite. They are outstanding! For sides we mixed and matched the Tostones (Banan Payzay), Red Beans and Rice, Maduros, White Rice and Avocado/Tomato Salad. I think sharing is caring so for me this is the way to go. We loved sipping Jamaican Kolas with our dishes followed by some Caribbean beers. Daily, who was our server and totally took care of us, told us they have some nice happy hour specials.
