If you’re a white woman who’s been sharing about Lindsay Clancy, please share about Tiffany Woods, too 💕 As we wait for the Lindsay Clancy verdict, I also want to advocate and speak up for Black mothers, too. Tiffany Woods gave birth 2 weeks before hurricane Katrina devastated her hometown in New Orleans, and she was displaced with her husband, and their four children. She did not have access to basic needs or access to the WIC program that helps underleveraged mothers. Her son, Emmanuel, was having an adverse reaction to his formula and she didn’t know what to do. In a time of distress and postpartum confusion she decided to mix Emmanuel’s formula with cows, milk and water, and he unfortunately passed away. She just wanted to FEED her baby and now she’s spending her life in prison. Tiffany has been serving a 36 year prison sentence and was recently up for parole a few weeks ago and it was denied because one white woman, Leone Fitzgerald, the Director of the Caddo Parish District Attorney’s Office felt she needed to stay in prison. Being a white ally in America means knowing your skin color gives you advantages but you’re human enough to realize it shouldn’t be that way. Sending love to Tiffany’s family and shame to Leone’s.

It split Memphis (a city central to the Civil Rights Movement) into 3 republican-leaning districts. Basically silencing the Black vote in Tennessee. This came days after the Supreme Court gutted the Voting Rights Act, so don’t tell me that racism isn’t alive and well here in America. Fuck this, man.

  2. Yesterday, in his sleep, my dad completed his journey to the next adventure. Larry “Pete” Ward was a person filled with wonder at and love for animals, building stuff, nature, mechanics, donuts, and his “Italian Beauty,” my mom. He was so supportive of his kids that for my college graduation gift, he gave me a 40-lb boulder carved with the words “Follow your dreams, littlest one.” Every morning, he sent a text telling us he was having his coffee and to send pictures of vicariousness for him to enjoy. Jarrett and I got married a year ago tomorrow, and this first picture is my dad the minute I came out to get walked down the aisle. It’s one of my favorites. He was diagnosed with #multiplemyeloma in 2013 and given about a two year prognosis. At the time he told my mom he wished he had ten more years. He got 9 1/2, and the last few months I feel so fortunate to have been under one roof with my family, with @jarrett_sleeper’s immense help and with my sisters @janelle.york & @cars_of_danville to soak up the time and tell my dad how much we love him. Pomegranates have a soft spot in our hearts and for Father’s Day we gave him a tree we’ll plant and water. Light a candle to send him on his way, or maybe take a #CritterPicForGrandpod. He wanted us to go out and enjoy the world, and in that spirit I hope you follow your dreams and have some adventures. 💖 I love you, Dad.

  2. Since I was able to understand the concept of being “something” I chose #marinebiology . The first time I saw a sea slug at seven I fell in love. The first time I held a horseshoe crab I knew for sure. Every class and test and quiz was fueled by a desire to learn more. Every table I waited, student I tutored and video I posted was the lifeline that funded my education and ability to be here. Choosing #biology has led me to The White House where I could advocate for sharks, tropical jungles where I found new species, across North America to speak at conferences teaching others how to engage youth in STEM, to be able to donate thousands to women in stem programs, and even to becoming published as an undergraduate in shark conservation education. It’s never been all that easy, nor made me rich in money, but following my heart despite all the logic telling me not to has been the best decision of my life. #sharks #animals #ocean

Someone in your life is quietly struggling with showers but they feel too ashamed to admit it and find solutions because of performative hygiene culture (or because they don’t feel “disabled enough”). I’d love if you shared this post so it reaches someone who needs it. 💙 I finally caved and got a shower chair years ago and it was truly life saving. I used it while pregnant, I use it now because my autoimmune disease (ankylosing spondylitis) makes my joints extremely inflamed and the medications I’m on for it cause severe fatigue and dizziness. The shower is such an easy place to fall and get seriously injured, so I’m a huge advocate for making showers as safe as possible when you can. Still gathering the words to describe just how much this milestone means to me, when just a few years ago I was in a hospital bed for 2 months not knowing if I’d ever see outside the walls of the hospital again. So many of you tell me that my content has made you feel seen, but you all have helped *me* not feel completely invisible anymore. In many ways, this community has saved me by reminding me that my presence is valuable and my voice is needed in this space. This is the most fulfilled I’ve ever felt in all my work.
