I remember the day, in February, when mRNA-1273 arrived to our lab at NIAID Vaccine Research Center, and mice awaited in the basement for their injections. At the time, we just had our sights on a phase 1 clinical trial by 100 days, with no idea the virus would spread into a pandemic. 66 days passed from the viral sequence release, and the first human was injected with the vaccine in a phase 1 trial. 9 months later, today, after 76,000,000 COVID cases globally... people in the US will receive the vaccine under emergency use authorization. Lives are about to be saved. Hospitals will become less overwhelmed. Normal times will slowly begin again. Someone in your life is quietly struggling with showers but they feel too ashamed to admit it and find solutions because of performative hygiene culture (or because they don’t feel “disabled enough”). I’d love if you shared this post so it reaches someone who needs it. 💙 I finally caved and got a shower chair years ago and it was truly life saving. I used it while pregnant, I use it now because my autoimmune disease (ankylosing spondylitis) makes my joints extremely inflamed and the medications I’m on for it cause severe fatigue and dizziness. The shower is such an easy place to fall and get seriously injured, so I’m a huge advocate for making showers as safe as possible when you can. Still gathering the words to describe just how much this milestone means to me, when just a few years ago I was in a hospital bed for 2 months not knowing if I’d ever see outside the walls of the hospital again. So many of you tell me that my content has made you feel seen, but you all have helped *me* not feel completely invisible anymore. In many ways, this community has saved me by reminding me that my presence is valuable and my voice is needed in this space. This is the most fulfilled I’ve ever felt in all my work. Exploring the world of hammerhead sharks with a focus on three elusive species: the Winghead, Scoophead, and Smalleye hammerhead. 🦈🌍 The rare Winghead shark (Eusphyra blochii) showcases a distinctively elongated cephalofoil resembling wings, enabling exceptional maneuverability in its preferred coastal environment of the Indo-Pacifc. Due to their elusive behavior, little is known about the life of this shark. The Scoophead hammerhead (Sphyrna media) boasts an angled, shovel-like head, which is uses to sift through sandy or muddy bottoms, in search of small benthic crustaceans and other bottom-dwelling critters. The Smalleye hammerhead (Sphyrna tudes) has a noticeably slender body and disproportionately small eyes. This species is predominately found in the deep waters along the Western coast of Africa.   2. Here are the three species of thresher shark found in our ocean. The pelagic (Alopias pelagicus), bigeye (Alopias superciliosus), and common (Alopias vulpinus). All threshers have an elongated upper tailfin, called a caudal fin lobe, that is used as a whip to stun unsuspecting fish or squid for an easy dinner. Before striking, they will sometimes swim in circles around a school of prey using their unique tailfin to condense the group for an easier target. When ready, the thresher slings the tail tip over its head like a trebuchet, knocking prey out with an average speed of 30 mph (48km).   3. Meet three giants of the ocean: the basking shark, whale shark, and megamouth shark. 💙🦈 Did you know the whale shark is the largest fish in the sea? It can grow up to 40 feet long, followed by the basking shark and then the megamouth shark in length. These three titans may seem intimidating, but they are rather slow, and have a strict diet of microscopic plankton. The Megamouth was only discovered in 1976, and earned its name from that distinctly wide mouth which is used to filter feed on the plankton. The basking shark is a bit more swift than its fellow giants, and has even been known to breach out of the water in order to get clinging parasites off! Despite their impressive size, these gentle giants face numerous threats, including accidental capture in fishing gear, plastic pollution, and shark finning.   2. 15:12:30 🧡 11 days ago, there was zero chance I was going to race Leadville. I was still processing my very public failure at Western States. I just wasn’t ready. @drmeganroche disagreed. She told me that I was not only ready to race…I was ready to chase history again. As soon as she convinced me to go from a “hard no” to a “soft maybe,” she said that she couldn’t sleep from excitement. How cool is that? She believed in me so much that it impacted her REM cycles. That was the push I needed to go for it. Leadville 2025 was just going to be about sharing as much love as I possibly could, while also totally obliterating myself. I didn’t make a spreadsheet. I just shared last year’s, and said to add 30-60 minutes. I genuinely didn’t think a record was remotely possible. Love goes a long way. Megan paced me the last 23 miles, my partner in obliteration. As we flowed at mile 95, I got emotional. “You saw this is me when I couldn’t see it in myself.” She responded, “I’m so proud of you” for the 800th time. Implied: TAKE A GEL AND GO FASTER. @run.doctor paced the 15 miles before that, fresh off his course record at the Ouray 100. I don’t have any videos of us kissing, but I promise that I wanted to when he dumped ice water on my head at mile 70. Mom, Dad, Leo, and Ollie rounded out the crew, bringing the belief, yogurt pouches, and trucks. Ollie’s middle name is “Hope” after Hope Pass, the crux of the race. Leadville magic is real. I’m not sure where this came from. But then I think back to mile 57, descending off of Hope Pass. Hundreds of racers stopped on the out-and-back course… and they said they loved me.   3. What does the Pain Cave look like? It looks like Powerline Climb at mile 80 of Leadville, with pitches over 20% grade at nearly 11,000 feet altitude. What does it sound like? For me, it sounds like @drmeganroche saying “I am so proud of you” over and over. Before last year, every Leadville record attempt was scuttled around Powerline. It’s just so hard to run that high for that long, and the GOATs of the past are the GOATs for a reason (even if they didn’t have our advantages of high carb, bicarb, and plated shoes). In 2024, I barely survived the climb, almost passing out at the top. In 2025, though, I had a not-so-secret secret: Megan is the best coach in the world. She started pacing me at mile 77, and I went silent. I knew the Pain Cave was coming. It’s dark. It’s scary. It’s where I failed so emphatically at Western States. Megan’s voice filled the silence. “I’m so proud of you.” “I love you.” “We’re making history.” “I”m just talking, don’t respond.” I went stealth mode before the race, only telling a few loved ones that I was doing it. My goal was to absolutely obliterate myself, and to share love while doing it. Or, as Megan told me before the start line: “time to redecorate the Pain Cave.” So what does the Pain Cave feel like? The easiest way to describe it is a deep part of your brain screams STOP STOP STOP, a signal from billions of years of evolution. It feels more reptile than human. Megan countered that screaming with love. She bedazzled the the Pain Cave. We put 7+ minutes on my 2024 ghost in the final 23 miles (and infinity minutes on my Western States ghost, who is still panicking somewhere outside Foresthill). 100 milers will always be a trip into the Pain Cave. Megan helped me rediscover that the blood and tears that inevitably splatter all over the walls can be used to paint a big, bright heart ❤️ Coach Vince Lombardi famously said that “Winning isn’t everything. It’s the only thing.” Utter BS. I have the best coach in the world, and she taught me the truth: “Love isn’t everything. It’s the only thing.” ♥️💜💙🧡 Video by brilliant @codybare_ 🔥

A little reminder 😇 It is not your job or your responsibility to make sure someone else’s cookies do not go to waste • Those cookies etc have already served their purpose outside of your mouth 👄 • They brought pleasure, joy, and entertainment to the person who made them • Learnjng how to cope with “loss aversion” is something I continually have to work at, but it is at the core of food sanity and emotional sobriety • There a FREEDOM in saying “It is not my job or my responsibility to make sure someone else’s cookies/money/effort does not go to waste” (if you still feel guilty take it to a church or homeless area) • BOTTOM LINE: the money and time is already spent.
