  3. In January, we were walking in our neighborhood when a car drove on the wrong side of the road and hit our stroller as we were walking. James hit his head and began vomiting after the stroller hit the pavement, so he was taken by ambulance to the hospital. By the grace of God, physical injuries healed. I didn’t know it then, but the greatest trauma that happened that day was to my own heart and mind. It’s been 5 months since I’ve walked by myself in our neighborhood. But today, I did it. I only took James, my head was on a swivel the whole time, I felt like I could barely breathe, and the walk only lasted 14 minutes. But I did it. And hearing James saying hi to the birds, pointing to the planes in the sky, and this smile… it made it all feel worth it again. Doing it scared ✌🏻

  2. ONE: Ozempic was originally created for Type 2 diabetics, but is now being marketed / prescribed as a weight loss solution. The injection basically tells your brain “I’m full” therefore you eat less, go into a calorie deficit, and lose weight. What you need to understand is that weight loss and fat loss aren’t the same thing. As you rapidly lose weight with these injections, your body isn’t just losing fat - it’s also losing muscle. When you have less muscle on your body you also have a slower metabolism. When you pair a low-calorie diet with less muscle mass your metabolism slows down. Then, when you eventually stop taking the injections (bc we aren’t going to take them forever, right?) your hunger returns. So now you’re hungry, but you have a slower metabolism. This is why the weight that you lost starts to pile back on. TWO: Stop blaming everything on your hormones. I said it I said it. Please put your firearms away. Listen, sometimes it really MAY BE your hormones. However, unless you are 90%+ compliant with your macros, consistent with strength training, and getting quality sleep, stop blaming everything on your hormones. Check those boxes consistently for a few months, then pursue a full hormone panel if you are still spinning your wheels. What trends would you like for me to address next?

  3. 3 things I’ve learned (or been reminded of): 1️⃣Time doesn’t just magically appear on your plate - something has to give. However, what I found is that the things that mattered stayed, and the things I was mindlessly wasting time on (scrolling on my phone) had to be condensed thanks to this new habit. 2️⃣Some days you will 100% ask yourself “what’s the point?” For me, I don’t leave my house much, so I struggled with the fact that I was getting dressed with nowhere to go and no one to see. 😂 Maybe for you, “what’s the point?” has a different meaning. Maybe you feel like you are married with kids, so no one is expecting you to take care of your body as much. Or maybe you are severely overweight but feel so far gone that starting feels like your “what’s the point?” It matters because how we feel has a direct impact on US and everyone around us. Good transition into number 3. 🤓 3️⃣When we feel good about ourselves we show up differently. Listen, you will still catch me dropping Rafe off at daycare fresh-faced and in a baggy t-shirt, okay? What you will also see is me avoiding as much eye contact and not initiating the smiles. Ha!! But I kid you not, when I “take care of myself” in the form of getting dressed and putting on makeup I was PROUD to be out and about. I walk in to daycare to pick Rafe up and I am proud to see the other parents and offer a smile - I am proud to stay a few minutes and talk to his teacher. The way I take care of myself has changed how I feel and how I approach conversations. More in comments…

  3. In awe of the love and support we have received over the last week. In the face of this tragedy, we’ve had no choice but to run to the Father and we have felt His hand on us all week. Today, the hands of the wonderful people that have so carefully crafted this home coming together to pray was one of the most healing things I’ve experienced through this.   3. I’ve tried to find the right words for a week, and they still haven’t come. My sweet Nana met Jesus on July 12th, exactly a week before her debut in @southernlivingmag. I wrote this story over a year ago, and we were both counting down the days until we saw it in print. It’s more than just a story about making tea cakes, it’s a testament to her fiery personality, nurturing spirit, and unending love for her grandchildren. My heart has been shattered, but Blessed Assurance, Jesus is mine, oh what a foretaste of glory divine: sewing, sliced tomatoes, the Masters, BINGO, Little House re-runs, a crispy Coke, a can’t-put-it-down book, and a long back scratch- all of my favorite things now bittersweet reminders of Jesus’ love. In true Nana style, I know she’s secretly happy she never had to see these photos come to life. But how thankful I am to have them now. I hope you’ll read about my Nana in this month’s issue, and in my upcoming cookbook, that I know she’s already passing around in heaven. ❤️
