  1. Clark undergraduate student employees on strike, seek unionization vote! The students are seeking the right to unionize, a contentious issue on campus that has been taking place since the start of the school year. Frustrated with what they said are low wages and inconsistent hours, undergraduate students went on strike to force action by the school. "We have seen a lot of the very critical sectors of our student employees — such as admissions, the library, our proctors — have gone on strike and shown their support," sophomore Ashley Gast said. "People seem to be understanding that this stuff really matters." Student employees have been working with Teamsters Local 170 to pursue unionization. According to Eli Gillen, a business agent for Local 170, the students planned to vote on unionization in February; however, lawyers representing Clark told the students that they were not legally allowed to organize. Gillen said Clark threatened to appeal a 2016 ruling by the National Labor Relations Board that granted students at Columbia University the right to unionize. "We have no guaranteed hours, and I have no idea when my next paycheck is going to come," Kipnis said. "One thing I'm fighting for is a minimum of guaranteed hours for every worker. It has been frustrating that Clark is claiming that we are not real workers. We run the operations for every home game on this campus, and if Clark doesn't want to classify us as real workers, they can hire other employees to do that. The university doesn't respect work study and they see it as an opportunity as free labor." "The goal of a union to me is job security, and job security means keeping the university open," Fontaine said. "People that think we are doing this to actually shut down the university, that is not the goal at all. We want the university to stay alive, that is how we are going to be able to keep our jobs. The goal is work with them, and I think we are all trying to achieve the same thing." https://www.telegram.com/story/news/local/2025/03/13/clark-university-undergraduate-workers-strike/82371010007/

  2. Worcester City Councilor At-Large Thu Nguyen Announces Taking A Hiatus Due to Transphobia and Discriminatory and Toxic Council Culture It is unfortunate, as we transition under a Trump administration and exponential increase of fear experienced by the LGBTQ+ community that I, as a City Councilor At-Large of Worcester, had to file a complaint to our Executive Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion about my experience in the past 3 years of dealing with transphobia and a discriminatory and toxic council culture, being misgendered by Mayor Petty and Councilor At-Large Toomey publicly on the council floor and recently learning that District 2 Councilor Mero-Carlson has been referring to me as "it" multiple times. I have formally requested for the City of Worcester’s Chief Equity Officer to open an immediate investigation and create an action plan to address this matter. These hateful acts are unbecoming of a legislative body whose duty is to serve our communities and to honor and enforce anti-discrimination laws. My filing of a complaint’s aim is to hold electeds accountable to moral and legal standards during a vulnerable time of crisis for the LGBTQ+ community. LGBTQ+ folks are facing more physical threats, violence and hate all over the nation. The Trevor Project reported an overall volume increase of nearly 700% on Nov 6 after Trump's election compared to the weeks prior. Many in our community are seeking to move to safer states, expressing worries for the possibility of gender affirming care and same-sex marriage being revoked and frightened to lose fundamental civil rights because of who we are. This is all in addition to the tragic reality of having anti-trans bills pushed throughout the nation in recent years and the mass shootings and murders targeting the LGBTQ+ community. I ask that if you care about me and the LGBTQ+ community to advocate for real systemic and structural change in leadership and send a clear message that hate has no place here in Worcester especially in the elected body. 3. I am appalled at the circumstances that have brought me here this evening. I will keep my remarks concise. Through the chair, I offer three things for not just city council but for my queer family here in Worcester and for the very confused people who keep attacking our community. The first which is pertinent to the English language. They/them as a singular pronoun had been in usage since the 14th century. No one in this room is as old as the 14th century so I'm going to ask for some adaptation. Second, I would like to share that the popular comment I've seen on social media, on reddit attacking our city, attacking all the beautiful things that we have built in Worcester says, people are "too sensitive" these days. "Language shouldn't matter." And I would love for that to be the case. I agree this is a poor use of our time. So I ask, I implore you that we adapt, that we correct our language, and I thank, through the chair, the members of city council who have taken accountability and apologized for their transphobic and bigoted behavior. We don't demand perfection but we do ask for growth. And third and finally, I invite not in angst, not in bad faith, but in calling in, a long standing practice of intersectional politics, I invite every member of city council to come to my queer studies classroom. You are all welcomed every time but be aware that you are a guest in my house when you come, and when you come, know that there are strong queer and trans people in my classroom who will collect you with the quickness if speak out of turn. I'll conclude here to quote our Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley, "We will continue to bring fire until you see the light."
