  1. Walking into the 2nd oldest mochi shop in California, Kogetsu-do, feels like stepping back in time. Lynn Ikeda is the 3rd generation owner of this special mochi shop that dates all the way back to 1915, when her grandparents, Sugimatsu and Sakino, first opened its doors. To some, it may just be delicious mochi, but to Lynn, it represents her family’s unique legacy and true Japanese American resilience. The shop was one of the few to survive the impact of Executive Order 9066, which forcibly removed Japanese Americans from their homes and sent them to incarceration camps during World War II. The Ikedas were fortunate enough to return to this shop and continue their family business, while many others in Fresno’s now non-existent Japantown were abandoned or forced to close due to the circumstances. At 110 years old, Kogetsu-do still stands strong, however, Lynn may very well be the last owner, which means we need to get as much of the mochi as we can while it’s still around! Kogetsu-do is a truly a living and breathing reflection of Fresno’s rich culture and history. P.S. *you MUST wear a mask and use cash only when you go!!!*

  3. i had the unique privilege of getting a behind the scenes look into @myhomieskitchen and let me tell you...i am truly blown away. xef, head chef and owner of MHK, gave us a tour of the kitchen and shared fascinating facts about fresh ingredients—like wajim and douglas fir—that many people have forgotten overtime due to USDA regulations. @myhomieskitchen brings a modern flare to Indigenous food practices while promoting zero waste and sustainability, any food tht isn’t served is given away and proceeds from the restaurant help fund xef’s food distribution program, which provided families with fresh food at no cost. proceeds also support workforce training workshops and a community garden where people can learn about how to grow their own produce. meals are served omakase-style to honor seasonal ingredients and Indigenous food traditions, so the dishes in this video may not be available when you visit, but i assure you, whatever you get is going to be delicious. our favorites were the jumbo scallop topped with douglas fir salt on top, the bison and wajim, and the lemon sorbet with elderberry compote. i highly recommend visiting @myhomieskitchen not just for the food, but for the entire experience. seriously one of my favorite restaurants of all time!! #fresno #california #indigenous #foodie #tastetest

  3. The UN human rights chief doesn’t issue statements like this about functioning democracies. I’m in grad school for international affairs right now, and part of my work is on UN accountability mechanisms. So when I saw this statement, I knew exactly how unusual it is. This is the language the UN uses for countries in crisis. It just used it about us. Quick note, because I read the policy so you don’t have to: this was the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, not a formal UN investigation. No UN body has opened one. That distinction matters, and posts claiming “the UN is investigating ICE” are overstating it. What Türk did is put the US on record: investigate every death, restore oversight, get children out of detention. 33 people died in ICE custody last year. 19 more already this year. Those are the government’s own numbers. Share, repost, and comment so someone who thinks oversight is optional can’t ignore the truth. Use your voice and stop asking what someone else is going to do.
