  1. 💩 Tired of hearing, “MOMMM, come wipe my butt!!” from the bathroom? This is a FAQ I get as an OT. Here’s how to help your child master this tricky skill, with lots of play built in! 🫶🏼I’m Jess, a pediatric OT and mom of two, guiding you toward more independent kids and less stressful parenting. ✨What age should kids wipe their own butt? Most START around 3.5-5 yrs and independent by 6-7 🧻What they need: •Coordination: reaching, grasping, wiping effectively
•Process: wiping until clean & proper TP disposal
•Practice: gradual progress with guidance
•Hygiene: washing hands after every trip 🚽 Tips for success: •Stable seat: use a toilet seat and/or footrest for balance
•Positioning: lean forward or sideways, resting an elbow on knees or holding nearby support (like a sink), to make reaching easier
•Toilet paper: teach how to rip the right amount and wrap it around their hand for full coverage •Start with wet wipes: easier for beginners (make sure they know not to flush!) •Scaffold: you might even have to do hand over hand at first. Supervise and check when they’re done with a clean wipe to ensure they’re thorough. Gradually reduce help as they build skill and confidence. ✨Learn the skill through PLAY: •Reach the target: Place stickers/clothespins on their butt to practice reaching. Sit them on a chair and add stickers on the back or bottom to make it realistic
•Learn “Clean”: Practice wiping tables or mirrors until spotless and how to check for cleanliness
•Toys/Dolls: Teach dolls to potty and wipe. Smear peanut butter or dirt on toys and wipe clean with wet wipes Wiping is the last step in potty training and takes patience, practice, and time. Every child learns at their own pace! ✨Let me know what’s working (or not!) for you! What questions do you have?? #pottytraining #wipeyourownbutt #pottytrainingsuccess #wipingbutts #playbasedlearning #sensoryplay #independentkids #pediatricot #childdevelopment

  2. SWING into the weekend with tips to get the most for regulation… Make sure you save for later! 💜Hi! I’m Jess, I’m a pediatric occupational therapist and mom of 2, guiding you in supporting your child’s development so they can THRIVE! Make sure you hit that follow button! Thank you to @outree for our sensory swing! I’ll link it in my stories/links highlight or comment SWING and I’ll send it to your DMs! Obviously this isn’t going to solve ALL your child’s regulation needs, but it sure does help! ✨Swinging helps organize the senses by giving TONS of opportunity for vestibular and proprioceptive input, which is the power house for nervous system regulation and organization. ✔️In general, fast linear movement, spinning, lying on back (especially with head upside down), erratic movement patterns, is going to be ✨ALERTING✨. This can help wake us up when we’re feeling sluggish, prepare our brains for learning, and help those who seek vestibular input (those “wild”kids who can’t seem to stop moving!) ✔️Slow linear, orbital (NOT spinning, just large, slow circular movement), and prone on belly are typically CALMING vestibular input. ✔️Proprioception is typically calming. We do this through input to the joints: pushing off the wall or floor, joint compressions with me holding their hands or feet, the fabric of the swing itself giving a tight, deep pressure squeeze (my kids call it their cocoon!) Try some of these strategies on the swing and let me know how your kids respond! **Remember all kids are different, be mindful of how your child acts with different types of swinging and adjust based off of their individual reaction and your regulation goals! **If your goal is to calm down overall, make sure you are ENDING with calming movement and proprioception, on or off the swing (like a burrito blanket roll or pillow squish!) #toddlermoms #preschoolmom #childdevelopment #playbasedlearning #sensoryswing #childregulation

  3. Shoe tying hacks are great (and I’ll show you some soon!), but nothing beats traditional shoe tying. Try teaching like this first! Save this to come back to it later! 💜I’m a pediatric occupational therapist and mom if 2, teaching you how to foster your child’s development so they can THRIVE! We’ve been talking about teaching my 5 year old and just never got to it, but last weekend when he had to run off the baseball field so I could tie his shoe, I thought we need to work on this! Typically kids learn shoe tying between 5-7 years old. If your child wears or will wear tie shoes for school, sports, or any other reason, work on teaching them so they can be independent! 👟Start with a large rope, like a jump rope or bathrobe belt. It’s easier to visualize and understand the movements on something larger, as they aren’t so refined. Break the steps down and teach one at a time! Once they master that, use a shoe on the table top or lap (it’s easier than trying on the foot!). 2 different colored laces help visually and make sure the laces are long! Some important things I note: •the text on screen is what I say, but there’s lots of stories and rhymes out there! •When making the loop, make sure they hold it close to the shoe and make sure they have a “tail” •When wrapping the other lace around, keep it tight and close 🔹If your child is struggling, I tend to have success with backwards chaining.. you do all the steps except the last one, which your child will complete a few times. Then add in the second to last step… and so on until they work backwards the whole way to the beginning! If it’s too hard with floppy laces, practice with pipe cleaners first. ‼️Make sure you’re working on fine motor skills as we need those in order to be successful with shoe tying, and many other self help skills! #preschoolmom #toddlermoms #developmentalmilestones #kindergartenreadiness #toddlersactivities #activitiesforkids #parentingtips #playbasedlearning #shoetying
