  1. Happy Native Heritage Month! Today and everyday we celebrate the first peoples of these lands. I’m so grateful to have been asked by @mtv to create a piece for #NativeHeritageMonth. "Celebrating Our Beauty" features Alaska Native women and our beautiful tattoo traditions. It is now airing on all MTV entertainment channels: MTV, VH1, Comedy Central, CMT, Paramount, Logo, TV land, Pop TV, and Smithsonian Channel throughout November. Let me know if you catch it! The power was strong on set filming with our all Indigenous cast and crew. Thank you to Ch'eelil, @eneimbp, and the Peter family for letting us film the tattoo ceremony. So grateful to have shared space with everyone involved! We want to emphasize the reclaiming of these tattoos are sacred and specific to Indigenous communities and that these traditional styles should not be appropriated. 2. I’m excited to announce that our Iñupiaq short film “Who We Are” that I wrote and directed is now up on YouTube! [link in bio] • Often we don’t see Alaska Natives on the screen and when we do, it doesn’t depict who we are as people today. About two months ago, I asked some creative friends and family to help me bring a short film idea I had to life. It was important to me that it be filmed in Nome, Alaska, the place my grandma spent most of her time growing up as she’s significantly influenced me. We even took a trip to our ancestral lands of Kigiktaq (Shishmaref), Alaska. The two minute film aims to honor the strength and legacy of our Indigenous people. • Women make up 32% of all directors, writers, producers, and, editors. Indigenous representation is even less in front and behind the camera. • In this short film, a young Iñupiaq artist connects to ancestral lands through her painting. She narrates the motivation behind the painting while exploring her role in the preservation of land and culture. • I want to thank some incredibly talented friends who collaborated with me on this project: our lead actress and Iñupiaq artist Tristan Morgan @agnauraq whose portraits tell stories so deep I could only try to write a story that does her work justice. @tomaskarmelo bringing his unique eye, visual talent, and good spirit to set as cinematographer - it’s always an honor to work next to you! Original compositions from Ilakus Drum Group featuring our traditional Iñupiaq drums which are said to be the heartbeat of our people, additional music from Evan Geiger, and BIG THANKS to my family in Nome who fed, lodged, hosted, and supported us through the creative process. • Filmed in Nome, Shishmaref, and Anchorage, Alaska. Dedicated to the women who influence our lives. • #SheDirected #NativeWomeninFilm #AlaskaNative #Indigenous #DefendtheSacred #reclaimyourpower #Inupiaq #Alaska

  3. > INUIT LOVE <⁣⁣ “Relationships are hard. To share space with one person in weak moments is hard. Internally we have been learning, healing, and growing everyday. On the outside we are constantly having to ‘come out’ to new people, something our straight relatives never have to face, while carrying our own individual and relational insecurities. Through these challenges, we have stood by each other and are so grateful for this love.”⁣⁣ •⁣⁣ “This love has brought forward a vessel for healing and safety. There is healing in our words and in our actions, a simultaneous undoing and rebuilding. This love is protective, shielding, and allows for softness. This love flourishes in trust and understanding. A knowing that we come to each other wholly and in celebration of one another, in both moments of strength and weakness.”⁣⁣ •⁣⁣ “This love is a constant decision to see each other through the complexities within our relationship and through circumstances that sometimes feel out of our control. Together, we navigate what it means to be Indigenous and queer. 1. And, it's done! Ok fine... not really. But 3D renderings are about as close as you can come to seeing the real thing before it's built. A little while back, @envisionhomedesigns reached out to offer to do a few complimentary 3D renderings of my project. I wasn't prepared for how exciting it would be to see these. Obviously the real landscape is a little different, and house color and trim decisions are still TBD. But it's amazing to see the house like this. No regrets about enlarging that deck. . Some designers and architects might include 3D renderings along with plans, but for most projects this would be an extra service. Owner-builders with a little extra time or budgetary constraints can make digital models with free tools like SketchUp or Blender. Of course, it's easier to hire a company that can take plans and create renderings for you. 3D renderings can include interior and exterior spaces, allow you to add furniture or play with lighting, and even let you explore the house in VR. . Envision Home Designs told me that simple exterior renderings like these would typically run about $500. While that's not nothing, it's worth keeping in mind that owner-builders often make many changes to a project during the design and construction phases, and changes become increasingly expensive the later they happen. If you make a single change to your home design as a result of doing a 3D rendering, it's probably worth it. . Thanks again to Envision Home Designs for helping me visualize my project! . #3d #architecture #ownerbuilder #homedesign #housedesign #homebuilding #housebuilding #alaskalife #thealaskalife #construction #houseconstruction

  2. It's been a pretty interesting last few weeks. A Facebook post I made months ago about my framing problems suddenly went viral and was shared over 24,000 times. I received hundreds of messages from around the world and picked up a little over 8,000 new followers on Instagram overnight. Most of the feedback has been from industry professionals and it has been sympathetic, funny, kind, and very insightful. I'm seriously overwhelmed by it all and I promise I will respond to every message. . I've had a lot of questions about where the project is at now and I wanted to provide a quick update. First, all of the defective framing created by original GC was demolished and I began reframing with a new contractor. See my previous posts for details. The reframing is going really well, and the quality of work is drastically better this time around. The cuts are tight, fasteners are correct, and the plans are being followed to the letter. As of today, we just need to finish some roof details, build a couple interior walls, cut out the windows, and take care of a few other odds and ends. Should be done in two or three weeks. . I'm glad my initial framing disaster has been so instructive. To all the new folks following along: welcome! I'll keep posting about that situation to the extent that I think it's helpful, but I hope this account becomes about much more than memorializing a disaster. There's a lot of exciting stuff in the homebuilding process that I'm looking forward to sharing. Stay tuned. . #anchorage #anchorageak #construction #building #ownerbuilder #ownerbuilding

  2. I just learned that yesterday was worlds pilots’ day, and although it’s late I still wanted to get on here and mentioned that only 5% of the worlds pilots are women and I’m incredibly proud to be one of them! A metaphor pilots often use when asking them how to get the where they are is “there’s 1000 ways to skin the cat” I was 17 when I took up an interest in flying planes, I had no family background in aviation nor had I even been in a single engine aircraft. We lost our home in a fire and three months later my dad passed away and I had no financial support in my new found interest and I learned that becoming a pilot was not going to be easy for me. But I like a challenge. I decided that I knew what I wanted to do and the thought of flying planes ignited a undeniable passion and drive inside me. I told all my teachers and counselors that I needed to dedicate all my time towards achieving this goal, so I doubled up on all my classes and graduated a year early. I started knocking on doors of flight schools offering to fuel, wash planes, lend a hand to the mechanics, run social media pages, anything just to get into a plan. There is a lot of advice I would give to somebody looking to get their ratings this way but looking back I wouldn’t change anything because the hard work I put in for every hour I flew compensated for the lack of background I had in aviation. I worked in exchange for every hour towards my private pilot license and I made handmade jewelry from Seaglass I collected in Petersburg Alaska to pay for my check ride! This is just a long story short of how I got started in my aviation career. I still have a lot to learn and I’m no expert but if anything I’m a great testimony to “ if there’s a will there’s a way” if you’re honest to yourself and others and aren’t afraid to do what your passionate about, I think we often find that we are far more capable than we realize. 👩‍✈️🤍🌎 #Womaninaviation
