  3. I don’t usually get vulnerable on here but here we are, trying new things… In college, at the age of 20, I had a bone density scan that showed I had horrible bone density. This didn’t surprise me, as I was not eating enough for how we were training. I don’t think I ever made it through a full year healthy and had repeated stress fractures. I was told the damage was done and that you can’t really build bone past 20 years old. This sounds like an oversight by my college team, but I think this was just very common in the NCAA at this time, so no flags were raised. A few months ago, @run.doctor encouraged me to get a bone density scan which I reluctantly agreed to. I think part of me thought, “I haven’t had a bone injury in 3 years, why now?” but I also think my apprehension came from not wanting to relive that moment from college. Turns out, my bone density is well above average for female endurance athletes and is of no concern to my doctor. Obviously, it should be if I’ve been able to stay healthy for so long, but I couldn’t believe how much that data empowered me. It was validation that I’m on the right track and doing things the right way after setting such a bad example in college. I’m in a position to keep pushing volume, training, and races without fear of my bones holding me back. After I crossed the line of the 50K this past weekend, I was overwhelmed with post-race emotions. Partially because I was so dang tired but also because I was SO DANG PROUD of myself. I’m an extreme self-critic, so I’m often dissatisfied and underwhelmed by my performances and usually find something to nitpick, but this was different. I took second when of course I wanted to win, but I did something big for me. I did something college me wouldn’t have thought possible. I am well aware that this isn’t the story for everyone so I want to acknowledge that I’m extremely grateful to have had the people in my life who pulled me out of some rough spots. 📸: @somerrunner
