  3. According to @ad.climbandski, McAlpine bought the snowboard he used on the Grand a few days earlier at @browsenbuyjh, a local Jackson thrift store, and this was his first run using it. In 2003, Doug Coombs, @BillDyer and I skied the Briggs Route, rappelling over the upper choke that Briggs skied through. Pretty sure there was more snow in it when we rappelled than when Briggs skied it with a fused hip. This has always blown my mind. Clearly, Xenu was on his side. Thanks again to @lannyjohnsonphotography for the mind-warping aerials, and to @jimmiryan and @erichroepke for the proud GT ski footy.   1. “Code Red for Humanity” that's where we are at - and still @jacksonhole leader Jay Kemerrer is using the profile and profit of @jacksonhole to fund climate deniers, white supremacists and leaders dedicated to leading our country off the cliff. The truth is that our kids can no longer expect to live on a healthy planet because of the policies of the right wing extremists who stand alone in the world in their denial of the most obvious threat to human existence - climate change. I worked at JHMR (as the PR person no less!) for many happy years, but today I think that many of the workers at JHMR, who have been working on sustainability initiatives at the resort, are embarrassed by their leader. You ask them to do all this work to make JHMR more sustainable, and then you go and fund the destruction of the planet on a scale 100x more powerful - you’re deliberately undercutting the work your employees are doing. What kind of leadership is that? Many of us see that today our democracy feels broken. Climate change solutions, a transition to a clean economy, are things that Americans broadly agree on - but the government still acts like it's 1950 - how? We would be on our way to a sustainable future if it wasn't for the power of a few very wealthy individuals, and the fossil fuel lobby behind them. There's no future for young people if we keep letting them run our country. I couldn't be more proud to be associated with @Patagonia, as Yvon says “there's no business to be done on a dead planet” so it's no surprise that they are saying ‘no more’ to JHMR. I think we will see other major brands find their voice in this time. Young people in Wyoming may be sidelined by a corrupt political process, but they can't be cut out of voting with their dollars. I think that's the future of activism, and I’m all for it. I feel ashamed to have bought a pass this year, though I love skiing there, I regret spending any money to support this. This story could have a mega impact on the outdoor industry, I would love it if you shared it. Lets vote with our conscience, there is no time to loose.

  2. In the Tetons we are on the cusp of a seismic shift in wilderness access, and what could be the end of the quiet wilderness winter experience. Humans need wilderness now more than ever. The natural world is our home - it has shaped the evolution of our species since the beginning. Every worthwhile adaptation we have as humans comes from our connection to nature. But today nature is becoming an academic idea, a thing to study, talk about and take pictures of. Nature is not an asset, it’s not a place we go to. We are nature - biological specimen hardwired to adapt to our environment just like the plants and animals. The idea that wilderness is something we should ban humans from is a terrible idea that reveals just how disconnected humans have become from nature. The troubles we suffer from as a society have their solution in nature. From depression to low back pain, gun violence and cell phone addiction - these are all a product of our growing separation from nature. The Tetons are not the Arctic Refuge, that ship sailed long ago. We have 3 ski areas adjacent to the terrain that is being closed, an airport in the national park that hosts thousands of commercial and private jets, helicopter tours and over 4million summer tourists - the notion that human powered wilderness travelers are the ones who should fix a problem that our leaders created, is insane! If we are serious about protecting wilderness, which I think we should be - let’s stop the unattainable growth that has led to where we are today, no more helicopter tours, no more ski area growth, no more hotels. To all you wilderness lovers - near and far, please attend the meeting on Wednesday at 6pm and speak up.   3. Here is a photo I have never shared, or told from 2020. A week earlier I was caught in an avalanche that almost ended it, the one we showed in Solving for Z. But a week later I made an even bigger mistake, walking onto a giant cornice, when an earthquake sound emanated from my feet. My partners estimated that I fell several hundred feet off the cliff below. The cornice shattered under my feet and I slipped into the cracks as it spider webbed. I landed hard on the glacier below, but was awake, but the force of the cornice debris triggered an avalanche that drug me down the glacier. I came to a stop with my arm dangling off lifelessly off my shoulder and my mouth packed with snow. An angel of a pilot from @blackoombhelicopters saved my hide that evening. I never did get to thank him. I flew home to Jackson the next day. I spent the next 6 months mostly by myself and with my family, healing my body and understanding my mind. Tomorrow at the @esavalanche kick off event I’ll share about that dark, but also crucial time in my life, my talk is called “The Terrain Between My Ears”… I don’t have a PowerPoint or a clear conclusion, but I do have a lifetime of reflections of what it means to survive the mountains when everything goes wrong. And why I’m still in love, and how I go back into the mountains, in a way that makes sense for me. It might be heavy! But it will be real, see you there! Thanks to @n8greenberg for inviting me.

We skied the most incredible line, the snow was all time, we were jumping crevasses and making the climb teams nearby laugh and it was just epic” she gushed about the 5000ft of turns a little more and then told me that she was on her way back up. “I came out here to find out if I still love these high elevation trips, if I still want to do it, if it’s still fun. And holy shit, I’m having fun.” We laughed at how are polar opposite our weekends were about to be. I was going to get high at Willie Nelson’s ranch and she was going to get high at 8000m. Jim and I both getting high with a Nelson. We were laughing and joking while she was eating a snack, with skis on her pack trying to get a few more calories in before walking up. I’m happy she said right before asking me about my own son. We are about to hang up when she starts to describe how beautiful the scenery was, it was lightly raining, misting, prayer flags flying. She snapped me a quick picture and we hung up. I will cherish this call, this picture and all for the times we’ve had together. Hils was one of the first people I told I was pregnant, she was one of my first calls when I was miscarrying, she helped me through the tough transition of athlete to corporate life, and most of all she was a friend who really listened. She framed the burdens and bliss of motherhood in a way that always made me feel like there was someone else who understood. We lived up the quiet moments in between the extremes together, skiing with her kids, hot tubbing, dancing, film tours, surfing, work trips, and rich conversations. I’m devastated by her earth-side departure, but I know that her memory and gifts will live on through Quinn and Graydon, her family, Jim and all who loved and learned from her.

  2. As he lay. Evening, in the half light hour, is one of those magic times. Walking across a meadow the scent of fall in the air. Endless possibilities. It is elky here. One almost forgets they are human as their soul blends to the woods. We round a bend, glancing at the deep tracks of a bull. Sporadic, hectic, scarring the pine carpet. Cresting a small ridge my gaze follows his trail to an abrupt end. Slack jawed and heartbroken he is discovered. This was the elk I came here to tangle with, but alas, his story ended before I met him. I long to know his story, his end, but most of all his life. He is this place, his blood is left in the mountains, he will feed this place. Still, I am left aghast. His end may have come at the tip of an arrow or antler. He was beautiful. He IS beautiful. Life... is beautiful and fleeting. Perhaps his story is still left to tell. *note: I found this elk on 2nd day of season, I did not shoot him. He has what I assume is either an antler puncture or gut shot arrow wound in his abdomen. His meat was long past saving. I am left with wonders of his end, hoping it was not human caused. #archey #elk #publicland #iwishiknewhisstory #september

  3. There is a story with this gun. A .410 that my dad was gifted when he was 8. His first rabbit was accompanied by the words “run little rabbit run”. Maybe that is what ethic is; a war between hoping the animal runs and hoping it doesn’t. A gun passed down father to daughter and some time spent outside to help with healing. An easy walk and two beautiful animals that I am so grateful for.
