  3. Last month I had the pleasure of running the Chicago Marathon as a guide for my friend and mentor @cedrickingmsg Here are three lessons I am grateful for learning: 1)“Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you'll land among the stars.” ― Norman Vincent Peale Cedric and I had been training to qualify for @bostonmarathon which meant a 5:40 finish. I never asked him what his previous finish times were. At mile 24 after a long arduous battle we were pacing at 6H not enough to qualify. He says to me, "Man, I've never ran a marathon faster than 7:15" I exclaimed, "What??” and asked “Why were we training for 5:40?" and he replied, "Because that's what it would take to qualify for Boston." We ended up finishing at 6:15 which was Cedric’s personal best by a full hour! 2)In practice giving. The last marathon I ran I struggled big time. My podcast’s name “Not Almost There” was derived from the experience. This time was different. It was not about me. I was there to serve. Giving is always something I believed in but to see what it does to your body and mind in practice is something else. I was not fatigued. I was not tired. I could have kept going because it was about serving. 3)We get to do this. Perspective. We started the race in a coral reserved for disabled runners. In fact I walked a mile with these runners just to get to this coral. Some of them wheeled their way over while others (like Cedric) walked on their prosthetic legs. Cedric said to me, “None of these people here, Joe, feel sorry for themself.” He continued as he was educating me, “They treat this as a job and you will not hear one word of negativity from them. They get to do this.” Whoa. I just thought how many times have I complained about something or not tried my best vs. the mindset shift of getting to do it? After all, I have all of my limbs and a working body. While things certainly get tough in life changing your mindset and way you view a situation can make all the difference. It certainly did for me. Cedric, it was an honor and pleasure to run by your side. Next up #London April 2023 where we will race and #qualifyforBoston @chicagomarathon @achilles_international @gobrewing
