  3. “Appreciation takes time” I repeat to myself as we stop for 87th time in 1 mile 🫠     I am trying to strike a balance between pushing him to continue on and allowing him some control and freedom to move at his own pace and explore and be curious. Some parents won’t push their kids to hike at all.   1. Staying warm in the cold starts with one thing. Layering the right way. Most people think you just throw on a big jacket and call it good, but that is how you end up cold, sweaty, and miserable on the trail. Here is the simple system that actually works in winter. Start with your base layer. This is the layer that sits against your skin and its job is to pull sweat away from your body. Sweat is what makes you cold in the winter so you need materials like synthetic or merino wool. Never wear cotton because it soaks up moisture and stays wet. Next is your mid layer. This is your insulation and its job is to trap heat. Think fleece, light puffies, or grid hoodies. You can adjust the thickness of this layer based on how cold it is and how hard you are working. If you feel yourself sweating, take this layer off before you get soaked. Your outer layer is your shell. This protects you from wind, snow, and moisture. A good shell keeps the elements out and lets the moisture from your base layer escape. Hard shells give the most protection and soft shells give more breathability so pick based on the conditions. The goal is to stay warm and dry without overheating. Add layers when you stop moving and remove layers right when you start to sweat. Do not wait until you are drenched because your body will dump heat fast once you stop. Layering is not complicated. You just need the right pieces and a little awareness of your body. Learn what works for you and winter hiking becomes a lot more enjoyable.

It was the first fox for all of us and I had to get out my good camera to get some shots of the fox and capture the moment.   1. The 100 mile Uinta Highline Trail is a little gem in Utah! Crossing high ridge lines above treeline for nearly the entire way, only dipping into meadows briefly for camping here and there. I did this hike in 2019 and really loved it. The logistics of getting from one end to the other may be difficult but it's certainly worthwhile to make the effort. Would love to come back and do it again, and see how much I could alter the route I did previously.   2. We are not hiking the PCT sobo, but we did do a nice little 110 mile section! In some ways this was a warmup for the Great Divide Trail as we begin that very soon. The couple days of rain and early season Washington I think was pretty good. This was also the first time Sprocket got to hike the final bits of the PCT, given all of the fires last year. She had been stopped just 60 miles short of the Canadian border, after having walked 2,600 miles across the country from Mexico. So congrats to Sprocket! Only fire season could stop her, and I'm glad we got the chance to do the final stretch together #pacificcresttrail #pct2023 #backpacking #hiking #thruhike #nevercameback

  3. We have begun :) The Great Divide Trail is a roughly 750mi / 1200km trail through the Canadian Rockies. Starting at the US/CAN border and continuing north through the rugged and remote mountains of Alberta and British Columbia. You may recognize this monument as this is also where the CDT terminates, and the PNT begins! Three long trails spawning from one point, heading off far in different directions. Big mountains, big animals, big bushwhack, and hopefully big poutine every time I'm in town. We're off and about, into the great north. It is an easy 0.8 mile hike out to the beach and then you can set up your tent above the driftwood! Depending on the spot you select you can hike another mile down the beach.
