I used to use social media as an outlet to vent publicly about the very low times in my life but I stopped because not everyone cares about what you’re going through or what you have to say and some people are actually praying for you to stay at the lowest times of your life. There were many times before that I didn’t want to be here anymore and life seemed too hard to keep going forward. But I’m happy that I’m still here. I’m happy that I have two children. I’m happy that I have a job that I love. I’m happy that I’ve made true and close friendships with people that truly love and care about me. I’ve learned to always give my time to those I care about because time is so important and we don’t get much of it. Always be real. Always be solid.   2. This is our cancer journey so far. It’s totally inaccurate but absolutely accurate at the same time. I can’t speak for my brother, but I’ve been swinging back and forth between hope and despair, between feeling empowered and determined and just plain exhausted. But there has been laughter and light and friends, so many friends! and family. This is my attempt to share what cancer has been like for us, but with what I hope is some levity. It’s absolutely been the most intense, awful experience of my life, but I’ve learned a great deal, and have never felt more love than I do now. If you are going through this, you are not alone, and you got this. All my love to the crazy amazing people who are holding us up through this. Two in particular, I hope you know who you are❤️❤️

  3. Aili wanted to make a cake. It was February 3rd, and I had been promising her for weeks that we would, so she and I and Bodhi made one in honor of World Cancer Day, the next day. When she woke up in the morning she was grumpy because she claimed she had stayed up too late making the cake (we finished at 8:15pm) She slammed her door coming out of her room at just before 6am. I went ballistic and was angry with her all the way to school. At exactly 8am my brother called me, I was at the light at Nuuanu and Judd, and told me the news. My dad died on World Cancer Day. In some ways it seems poetic, in most other ways it just feels cruel and unfair. It’s been a week since that day, and that day was exactly one month from the time I got home from my trip to New York. In that month we were frenzied and freaked out, but also we always felt hope. So we pushed and tried so hard. They took him from us at 4pm that day. Around that time, Josh picked up Aili from school and came and got Lyon (who was sick with the flu and quarantined in his room- it is a small miracle that no one else caught it, especially because that day I cuddled up with him at every chance I got.) The beef between Aili and I evaporated and we were left with a rainbow…a rainbow, and Chicken McNuggets (with one of each of the sauces) from our aboveandbeyond neighbor. Aili called me from the car as I was standing outside looking up at the sky and told me “there’s a rainbow for Babu.” I saw that rainbow as a sign, as I do with everything- my picture frames are falling off the walls with glass shattering. We have such a long way to go in perpetuating my dad’s legacy. I know when we are able to put everything together, so much good will come of it. But right now we are broken, and picking up the pieces from something that happened so fast we still can’t grasp it. F Cancer, truly.

  2. Being in the water for moments like this is something I’ll never get over. Everything happens so fast and you’re just trying to take it in while also capturing it. This was shot in really low light, and the photo didn’t come out the way the moment actually felt at all. I edited this in @lightroom on Desktop and was able to bring it back to something that feels way closer to what it was like being there. Shaping the light, cleaning up the grain, and turning a split second underwater into something I can actually hold onto. That’s what I love about it.
