  1. Unbound • un·bound • /ˌənˈbound/ ➳ to be free from constraints, ties, or limitations. Cycling is many things… not just a means to get from point A to point B or one way to get a workout. For a lot of people, cycling is a means to feel free. Dare I say unbound. My body can’t do what it did before the accident. While I know how lucky I am to have survived and to have access to prosthetic care, that doesn’t mean I’m pain free. Last year, I arrived to Emporia on crutches, b/c walking was exquisitely painful. I wasn’t sure if I could ride 200 miles, if there were going to be stretches of hike-a-bike like in 2023. Often times, riding is the only time I feel free from pain and the awkwardness of walking with a carbon leg. While @unboundgravel is famous for its 200+ mile race over the Flint Hills and across the tall grass prairie, there are other distances; options include the Junior, 25, 50, 100, 200, and XL 350. There are over 5,000 riders signed up to test their grit, determination and fitness this weekend. Across the distances there are 17 paracyclists registered!!!!!! 🤘🥳 This is huge. Part of why I’m racing the 100 is there will be a full female para-podium. If I did the 200, I’d be racing alone again. So far, I’m the only female paracyclist to ever do the 200. I was the first paracyclist ever to do Unbound 200 solo. This year, there are nine male para-cyclists signed up for the 200! Biggest field yet!! To see these categories grow is incredible. Kudos to the @unboundgravel team and to @lifetimeae for recognizing the importance of including para-categories in all of their events. Honestly, they’re doing a lot to create opportunities for women, new riders and para-athletes. Hats off to @kcmohn, @treva2w, @meeeshyd, @_seanthurman_, & @_masonmohn_. Update: I learned that @clara.brownie is going to take on the 200 in the women’s para category!   3. Story Time 📖 The first time I met President Obama was in Colorado Springs in 2012 at a campaign stop. That year I was living at the Training Center preparing for the London Games. On the day of the rally, I showed up early and waited with a large crowd to hear him speak. Somehow I found my way up to the fencing for a front row spot. It can help to be kinda small 🤏 It was a very sunny day and everyone was having a hard time in the heat. I wore a tank top to stay cool right up until President Obama took the stage. Then I put on my Team USA kit. 🇺🇸 If you watch footage from the rally, President Obama saw me with my kit and gave Team USA a shoutout 🤘🥳 After the rally, President Obama shook hands with people along the fence. The Secret Service does not mess around. Before the President walked by they tell you what’s what. Like don’t stop the President, don’t reach for the President, don’t have your hands in your pockets. They are very serious. So when the President started walking along the fence, he was intermittently shaking hands and saying thanks to folks for showing up. When got to me he stopped. He shook my hand and I teased him for being a Chicago White Sox fan ⚾️ As a lifelong Chicago Cubs fan, I couldn’t help myself 🐻 President Obama laughed and proceeded to give me a fist bump 👊 Since, I’m an enthusiastic fist bumper, I proceeded to “blow it up” with the President 🤜 💥 🤛 Present Obama laughed even more and then called his personal photographer over to take our picture. That’s when he put his arm around my shoulders. I couldn’t believe what was happening. After the President moved on, a White House staff person gave me their card and told me to send him my address so I could get a copy of the photo. I can tell you White House staff business cards are realllyyy nice 👌 Pure white, heavy card stock and embossed with the White House emblem. As I walked away from the rally towards the Olympic Training Center, I felt stunned by what just happened. I was on cloud 9. To be continued… #President #Obama #TeamUSA #USA
