APD Arrests Armed Man at Aurora Carnival #SaferAurora On Saturday night, June 22, APD officers working off-duty at the Wright Carnival were alerted by numerous people that a man was armed with a gun, threatening others. Officers responded to where this man was, and as they rounded the corner behind a ride, they confronted a man holding a handgun. Officers gave numerous commands to drop the gun, at which point the man complied. Officers were able to place the man into custody and recovered a fully loaded 9mm handgun. The man, 30-year-old Luis Penaloz-Hererra of Aurora, was booked into the Aurora Detention Center for felony menacing and possession of a handgun while intoxicated. According to reports, Luis was upset at employees who did not let a family member ride a specific ride due to the height requirements. We want to thank our officers who continue to keep our community safe every single day. We are proud of their response and actions to safely take a man into custody who was threatening people with a gun.

  2. Last week, APD officers tracking a stolen vehicle were attacked by several minor-aged criminal offenders. More than 20 rounds of gunfire were fired at our officers, prompting a multi-jurisdictional pursuit that traveled through portions of Aurora and Denver. Today, we are sharing some of the body-worn camera video from the incident. The Aurora Police Department commends the actions of our officers, as well as our partners from the Denver Police Department, who displayed the utmost poise and professionalism while responding without hesitation to a violent and life-threatening situation. Ultimately, four teenage suspects were taken into custody without a use of force. Several firearms believed to be used in the attack on our officers were also recovered. The suspects, aged 15 and 16, are not being identified because they are minors. They all have now been formally charged with two counts each of attempted first-degree murder of a peace officer, and one count each of aggravated motor vehicle theft and second-degree burglary, among other charges. #CommunityCommitment #APDInAction

  3. Last week, you might have seen information about a missing child, Tupac, who left his home late Sunday night, Sept 8. After not returning home overnight, we became concerned the following day and rallied the troops. The following day, we stood up a command post. We assembled a team of detectives to knock on doors; called in our Emergency Response Team to canvas on foot and drive UTVs in the area; our Drone Team provided aerial support; Colorado Bureua of Investigation (CBI) assisted us with a missing endangered alert; Search and Rescue Dogs of the United States responded with K9s to help search, and utilized many other officers in the efforts to locate Tupac safely. Each team's efforts were crucial and greatly appreciated. Thankfully, with the help of a community member, Tupac was spotted in a locked storm drain. District 2 PAR Officers were first on the scene, and they provided Tupac with water, a snack, and reassurance, leading to a successful outcome. Our partners at @aurorafiredpt arrived and helped free Tupac from the storm drain, and @falckrockymtn transported him to the hospital for evaluation. This was a team effort, and we appreciate everyone who played an essential role. Your efforts did not go unnoticed and were crucial to safely locating Tupac.

  1. Its hard for me to say this but I’m paralyzed from the waist down T10- T11 vertebrae. In that part of my back my spinal cord is damaged.” What it shows on MRI. this news broadcast does a decent job explaining what happened where I’m at now and where I’m headed. Last 2.5 weeks have been very tough physically/ mentally. Flew into Maui on November 23rd injured myself the morning of the 24th. Spent a total of 45 minutes on the water not taking the pain I was experiencing seriously and continued to surf and but once I paddled around 300yd back got to shore my legs finally gave out and I spent an hour on the beach before goin to ER. While surfing I hyperextend my back resulting in a back compression myelopathy injuring my spinal cord also cutting off bloodflow to that area of the spinal cord resulting in paralysis. Spent some days in the ICU then 2 weeks in a regular hospital room. Flew to Denver on air ambulance plane to Craig spinal and brain injury rehab center. This has easily been one of the most challenging things I have to go through and I can’t even take it day by day I have to break it down minute by minute because it is such a battle at times! I have some feeling in my hips/ upper thighs but no feeling in other areas. Gettin a little personal here but I was constipated for like 11 days causing extreme abdominal pain. I have a catheter which is a tube in my dick to get my pee out and have been dealing with persistent lower back pain and recently extreme neuropathic pain in my legs/feet. But that is somewhat of a good thing because it means connections to my legs aren’t completely dead! Doctors and neurologists have hope I’ll be able to make some sort of recovery but it is so early on we can’t make any guarantees. I’mma keep my head up and look forward! Thankyou endlessly for all the prayers, support, good vibes, and all the love I truly appreciate you :)

  3. one year sittin down. a tough milestone to make it to. with having certain passions altered, the loss of functionz, and trying to come to terms with the nature of my injury an how I ended up with this new body has been challenging without a doubt. Learning to adapt and live with this change has taught me a lot. Thank you for the prayers, thoughts, contributions and everything in between over this past year. I love and appreciate you more than you'll ever know as I continue to strive towards further recovery and acceptance :)

  2. with this day approaching i’ve been thinking about what i wanted to say. for those of you who don’t know me well, a year ago today i was in a boating accident. my life has changed drastically since then i wanted to take this opportunity to tell me story :) • • • the morning of october 18th, 2021 i was in a boating accident. we woke up the the boat rocking because of the wind, we got up and contemplated waiting out the storm. about an hour into contemplating our anchors started to pull up from the ground and we decided it was time to head out. my friend, lacey, and i began pulling up the anchors and getting them on board. we all got back on the boat and started the motor, but the boat didn’t move. it turned out we were beached on the rocks and lacey and i decided to get off the boat and push it off the rocks. we ended up doing just that. when i tried getting back on the boat my mom grabbed my hand from the deck and lacey was pushing me from underneath. when i couldn’t pull myself back up, i told my mom to let go of my hand and i fell back into the water. just as that happened a gust of wind picked up and blew the front of the houseboat onto my leg. lacey pulled me out from underneath and that was when we realized my left leg was flayed open from right below my knee cap to behind my ankle. my dad got off the boat and put me on the deck where i proceeded to walk my mom through how to tie a tourniquet onto my leg. a few minutes later i was put into a helicopter and airlifted to a hospital in lake george, utah, where i spent the rest of my week and had two surgeries. after all of this i went home and did 30 sessions of hyperbaric treatment. i was out of school from before fall break to the end of winter break.
