  2. Today “Run to: Be Visible” will be released! This dream came to fruition with the support, encouragement & amplification of many. Thank you🙏🏽. ——————————————— While supporting myself through undergrad, I worked at a major outdoor retail store, which was my 1st introduction to the outdoor sports industry. I learned the difference between trail & road shoes, hydration packs, and got my first pair of trekking poles as a company gift (which I gave away because I didn’t see why I would use them when a stick works just fine 😆). While employed there, I remember looking at the catalog advertisements that never featured people who looked like me or represented how I engaged with our ecosystems. I remember attending the Bamff film festival and thinking it was physically impressive but also noted how it featured mostly white cis men “conquering” ecosystems. Somehow through the meandering river that is life, today my own story and how I relate to place will be shared. But what I think is important to highlight is that my story isn’t unique. Many Indigenous peoples and students use running as a pathway to honor, heal, and connect with their ancestors (past and future). This run was my joyous celebration and prayer for the future, as well as a chance to amplify many Indigenous knowledge holders and scientists with whom my scholarship now sits. My call to action in this film is to support Indigenous science organizations who braid together settler colonial science & Indigenous knowledges so that many future students like me can exist and be supported for the betterment of all, while also transforming the scientific process. We know that while Indigenous Peoples make up less than 5% of the worlds population, 80% of global biodiversity lies within their lands (United Nations, 2009). Yet, very little Indigenous science is incorporated into vital documents like the IPCC report or enviromental impact statements, and Indigenous Nations are poorly engaged in consent practices (David-Chavez et al, 2018), despite surviving generations of colonization and changing climatic conditions. We are interdependent. Be part of the 🌊 of change by investing in Indigenous sciences 💜.
