  1. I didn’t wear a bikini until I was 43. (I’m 43 now.) I’ve had a bad relationship with my body for almost as long as I can remember. Eating and writing about it for a living, and being subjected to the public scrutiny that came with that job, was my lowest point. The accumulation of those years of drinking, depression and endless days and nights spent consuming food in order to generate enough “content” for the paper and the magazine took its toll on me. It all adds up; the body keeps the score. The last two years have presented a variety of health challenges for me, from hospitalizations to surgery, but they’re two years that have been miraculous in terms of how I’ve learned to see and care for myself. I am so grateful for the body I have. We are so lucky to be these bizarre embodied creatures. We are so blessed to have these fleshy, lumpy, bumpy, bumbling vessels for our souls. How amazing it is that we’re all here in the first place, and how wonderful it is that we’ve been given these bodies to navigate this one life. I love my body because it’s mine. I cherish your body because it’s yours, and you are here, and that is a miracle. I wish that we could all see the miraculous nature of ourselves and hug our miraculous bodies as tightly as we always needed someone else to hug us. John caught this picture of me as I was talking to a yoga teacher after a recent practice, my first since knee surgery, on my way to swim. I am glowing. I am grounded. I am unafraid of being seen. Yoga and swimming are just two ways I’ve learned how to love and appreciate my body and how it moves through this world; there are so many ways to learn how to love and appreciate yours too. Whatever ways we find to learn to love ourselves and our fleshy vessels are good ways, because they allow us to extend that love and gratitude towards others. I think a lot about the sad, anxious child I used to be and I love her so much. I think a lot about the sad, anxious adult I became and I love her so much too. I wouldn’t be here without her and the horrible, hard choices she made, and I am so glad to be here, in this bikini, on this beautiful day, loving this world and every body in it.
