The hardest part in this journey for me has not been Revie’s diagnosis but fighting an entire system and being left to feel like “I should have done more because they said I should have.” In our last care conference @intermountainchildrenshealth they told me Revie needed a trach. A surgery that didn’t make sense. I asked what changed with her clinically to suddenly need this surgery and the response from the doctor is why parents feel this way… even if we know it’s not true. He said, “because we rely heavily on parent communication and advocacy and you’ve been quiet, we didn’t know how bad it was.” It was a complete lie. A surgery used to cover up their mistakes and they needed me to hurt to agree. Their hospital had A system alert called “Mayas rule,” A legislature was involved. And the CMO was in the room during that very meeting because of how loud my advocacy has been and yet… still… they blamed me. This is one of the most important things for me to change along this journey. Reminding parents it was never your fault. This is the peak of her bloom, and it’s amazing to see not just the sheer size of the plant but also how much other life it has attracted — if you look closely you can spot bees, butterflies, and even a hummingbird all around these giant blooms. It’s kind of comforting, in a way, to see that even with death nature brings life.   2. Here’s an update on my neighbor’s #centuryplant agave currently going through its death bloom. My neighbor @thisisbrion and his family have been lovingly caring for this “mamagave” as she prepares to die — since my last video, the stalk has grown another 4’ taller!! He says that dozens of people have been stopping by each day to read his sign and appreciate nature at work — no matter how bittersweet a death bloom might seem.   3. My neighbor’s #centuryplant agave is giving off its “death bloom”. It can take up to 30 years to happen and occurs just once. The plant shoots a gigantic stalk up into the air (between 25-30’) and gives off a final bloom before dropping genetically unique seeds and then, well, dying. “What a grand send off” indeed. It feels like I’m intruding on something as intimate as a plant’s death ritual, yet at the same time.. it’s like totally showing off, right?! 😂✨ It’s interesting to see how different living things handle turning 30. For me, I’ve focused more on stretching before bed and taking a collagen supplement, but I’ll keep in mind that death blooms are always an option.   2. That moment us parents had to dance to win our kids a dance scholarship! . We were V.I.P. (Very important parents) We got to take a class from the beast @gabedofficial the one in RED 🟥 and it was such a fun class, but I did not know we had to dance it in front of everybody and I mean EVERYBODY! So they took us on stage and had us dance it out. . SHOWING UP matters, it impacts and lets our kids know we are there for them. Of course I’m the loudest one, I’m the hype man and hype time, along with my wife. But being a former dancer Energy is transferred, so the energy we bring gives them more fuel! Doing these things I want to show my children that I am committed to them too! The amazing thing about dance is, it’s more than just MOVES. It’s teaches dedication, commitment, discipline, integrity, self love, awareness, and more! Dance lessons is Life Lessons. Well that’s what I taught all my students. One of these families is that of Emran and Sajad Kohistani, who were taken by ICE during a routine immigration check-in at the courthouse.
