This is the peak of her bloom, and it’s amazing to see not just the sheer size of the plant but also how much other life it has attracted — if you look closely you can spot bees, butterflies, and even a hummingbird all around these giant blooms. It’s kind of comforting, in a way, to see that even with death nature brings life. It makes me think about the things I hold onto for too long, afraid that if I let them go that nothing will grow in their place. What if I could trust in the process a bit more?   2. Here’s an update on my neighbor’s #centuryplant agave currently going through its death bloom. My neighbor @thisisbrion and his family have been lovingly caring for this “mamagave” as she prepares to die — since my last video, the stalk has grown another 4’ taller!! He says that dozens of people have been stopping by each day to read his sign and appreciate nature at work — no matter how bittersweet a death bloom might seem.   3. My neighbor’s #centuryplant agave is giving off its “death bloom”. It can take up to 30 years to happen and occurs just once. The plant shoots a gigantic stalk up into the air (between 25-30’) and gives off a final bloom before dropping genetically unique seeds and then, well, dying. “What a grand send off” indeed. It feels like I’m intruding on something as intimate as a plant’s death ritual, yet at the same time.. it’s like totally showing off, right?! 😂✨ It’s interesting to see how different living things handle turning 30. For me, I’ve focused more on stretching before bed and taking a collagen supplement, but I’ll keep in mind that death blooms are always an option.   1. Thought y’all might like to see how I made the sphere. I dipped newsprint strips into porcelain paperclay slip and paper machéd them onto a ball. Once the shell was firm enough, I deflated and removed the ball, completed the sphere, and added many, many layers of porcelain paperclay slip to the surface (without the newsprint this time). Once I finally had enough thickness for the sphere to survive the firing without collapsing, I was able to apply the cracked surface and fire. It took many weeks of slowly adding slip to the surface to get it to the thickness I needed, so I probably won’t use the same process for future sculptures. It definitely worked though! I love how paperclay can be worked bone dry without cracking. It gave me enough flexibility and time around my teaching schedule to leave the project and come back to it when I had time, which is a huge help. I highly recommend paperclay as a sculpture material. Video description: Stone paper machés porcelain paperclay dipped newsprint onto a large exercise ball. Then they apply more paperclay slip to the surface, dry it out with a blow torch, and then smooth the sculpture. I love treating a cup like a piece of paper, and the three dimensional nature of the cup makes for a really compelling canvas for me.
