  1. Holding space with that. So much of womanhood—especially Black womanhood—is about waiting. Waiting for others to celebrate us, to honor us, to see us. It’s what we were taught, and yet, so often, that celebration feels out of reach. It’s clawed, fought for, and hard-earned. That’s why I love this tweet by @thekayanova. When I first read it, something immediately clicked. It reminded me that I am in the driver’s seat of my life. There’s nothing wrong with being celebrated by others—it’s beautiful and necessary, especially for Black women, because community and showing up for each other are so important. We are each other’s mirrors, so that’s real. But waiting? Waiting for love, for a job, for a house, for the “big moments”? Anchoring our lives around those fleeting milestones isn’t sustainable. I’ve had to take the reins back and ask myself: Who am I outside of those moments? I’m more than just a checklist. I’m more than the days marked by applause. Right? ….right?? Even on my hardest days—the ones no one sees—that’s when I’m most deserving of celebration. The mornings I get out of bed despite it all? They deserve an award. The small joys I create for myself? Those are sacred. And I owe it to myself that to honor me. A few weeks ago, after a really good meeting at work that was on a really hard morning, I didn’t wait for someone to tell me I’d done a good job or to spoil me. I grabbed a bagel, went to the park, and listened to my favorite podcast in the car. I took control of my own joy, and it made everything feel more meaningful. I was present and happy and that’s all that mattered. This season, let’s remember that “spoiling yourself” doesn’t have to be extravagant. It doesn’t have to be tied to money - but it can, sis. It’s about intention. It’s about healing yourself, soothing yourself, and holding space for the you that’s here right now. You deserve to be seen. You deserve to be celebrated. And most of all, you deserve to create joy on your terms. #BlackJoy #selfhealing #IntentionalLiving #SelfCareForBlackWomen #createyourownhappiness #blackgirlhealing #blackgirljoy

  3. I wrote this blog post in August 2017, well before the #fyrefestival “dueling documentary” saga on @netflix & @hulu. #linkinbio I’m sharing here now because I still believe some of these reflections to be true. Many of us (myself included) have an unhealthy relationship to social media. If you, like me, find yourself feeling worse after a 30 minute social media binge (not better), it may be time to re-evaluate your social media use. If social media is having a negative impact on your relationship or friendships, it may be time to re-evaluate. That said, some of my views have evolved since writing this. While I still believe honesty on social media is important, I don’t know that it is the ultimate solution. Social media is really just entertainment in the end, and we all would rather see beautiful beaches, private jets, and delicious food than the mundane. I don’t know that this desire will ever change. And forced “honesty” on social media, may lead to further unhealthy attention seeking behavior. I think one key solution is AWARENESS. Let’s be aware that what we see on social media is a highly curated take on a small percentage of someone’s life. All of us struggle, regardless of how beautiful our feeds may look, how rich we are, or how much celebrity we’ve attained. All of us are flawed. Let’s be AWARE that social media giants have thousands of brilliant engineers working in the background whose sole purpose is to hack our psychology to keep us coming back for more. If you’re battling social media addiction, you’re one person fighting against an army, so be kind to yourself. Cc: @tristanharris By cultivating this awareness, perhaps we can counteract some of the negative psychological issues amplified by social media like depression, anxiety, and low self esteem. We can begin to build real communities to support one another offline. Social media is not going away and it is not the source of all problems. But I think we as users and more importantly the companies who profit from our use, can do better.

  1. Did you know you can press the screen & hold to pause the reel? I’ve met 2 people recently that didn’t know that so figured I’d share bc this video moves fast! Chaturanga is one of the most challenging poses in vinyasa yoga but it’s rarely broken down in a public class setting. It’s important to practice proper alignment (stacking elbows over the wrists) to protect your joints & rotator cuff. This requires a ton of upper body strength & a lot of forward movement as you lower. Most people lower straight down into chaturanga which sends the elbows back, then they hurl themselves into up dog which puts a lot of stress on the rotator cuff. Instead of lowering straight down, move FORWARD as you bend at your elbows, keeping your elbows stacked over your wrists. You want to create a 90 degree angle with your elbows, so elbows are stacked over the wrists & shoulders are in line with the elbow & hips. Try this Chaturanga test to see if your elbows are staying in alignment. Start in a hands & knees position & place blocks (on the tallest level) behind your hands/forearms. Inhale: Roll the eyes of your elbows forward, look forward, keep the neck long & shoulders away from the ears Exhale: Bend your elbows & lower half way. Your shoulders should move FORWARD & not lower below the height of your elbows. If the blocks move, this is giving you feedback that you’re not moving forward enough to keep the elbows stacked as you lower. This might sound easy but it’s SUPER challenging, even for us seasoned yogis! You can practice this on your knees or try it from a plank position. Repeat several times to build strength & muscle memory. If you have any questions or feedback leave them in the comments & save this post for yoga inspo! FYI: I offer yoga assessments & yoga privates in person or virtually. DM me if you’re interested & like to geek out on alignment! 😊

  2. Wow - I had no idea so many of you would find my last chaturanga dandasana tutorial so helpful! I’m grateful for your support, your shares & your thoughtful feedback. Sending a big warm welcome to all the new faces here! In my last tutorial we positioned blocks behind the hands & today we’re experimenting with blocks in front of the hands. If you haven’t noticed - I love to play with props 🤩 A few things to note about my tutorials: First & foremost - always listen to your body. It is your wisest teacher 💖 The goal of yoga is not perfection & my goal as a teacher is not to say “this way is right & that way is wrong”. My goal is to inform & educate students on proper alignment based on my experience & training. I’m especially keen on shoulder health - since shoulder injuries are the most common with yoga practitioners & chaturanga is often where things can get messy 🫣 In my 20 years of experience practicing & teaching - I’ve noticed this pose is rarely broken down in a class setting in detail - so think of these tutorials as cliff notes for those that are curious. There is nuance, there is context & there’s only so much I can share in a 20 second reel 😜 Chaturanga dandasana is not supportive for every body & that’s ok! Being able to practice this pose does not make you a better yogi. For example, when I move into Hanumanasana (splits), I have bone-to-bone compression in my hips so I know that pose is simply not for my body. I don’t try to force it. I don’t make it mean anything about me or my abilities. I either modify or skip it & I’m thankful there are thousands of other yoga poses I can practice 😊 If you’re experiencing shoulder or wrist pain or immobility - drop your knees to add extra support. Or skip it altogether. It’s far better to modify or skip it than to repeatedly practice a pose with compromised alignment & build faulty muscle memory - especially in a pose like chaturanga - which over time can irritate the rotator cuff or cause wrist & elbow issues 🙌 Thanks for being here & understanding that yoga is far more than what a pose looks like 💖✨😽
