  2. I know this topic is uncomfortable for a lot of people but it remains our number one asked question in our DM’s - autism and periods. It’s so important to have these conversations because parents are terrified for their special needs daughter to start her period - I know I was! The week before (PMS week) is a lot of emotional highs/lows and behaviors we usually don’t see from Presley (it’s usually a rough week at school) and then the next week is a lot of creating peace in our home, proper rest, and nutrition. It’s been a learning journey for my husband and I but we get better every month at handling all the things during this time of the month - and you will too! 🥰🥰 A few things that helped us: - talk to your doctor about different options - some families choose to go the birth control route to eliminate periods (do what you need to do - no judgement) - period underwear - disposable period underwear - a bidet for your toilet - a loofah with a LONG handle to help with washing - I had to learn Presley would get headaches and cramps before she could tell us - so I made sure to have liquid ibuprofen on hand. - chocolate - duh! - a weighted heating pad to rest on the stomach - a hot shower in the morning and a hot Epsom salt bath at night I hope this helps! What can seem scary will become your new normal and you will ROCK it! You got this mom and dad! 💜💜💜💜💜

  2. There is something about watching Kevin Reddington in this trial that goes beyond simply watching a very good lawyer. Yes, his cross-examinations are brilliant. He catches the tiny details. He knows when one question is more powerful than twenty. He can take a piece of evidence that initially sounds incredibly damaging and, with a little context, make you look at it completely differently. But actually, one of the things I’ve noticed most is how he treats his client. In a case where Lindsay Clancy is probably one of the easiest people in America to dehumanise, he hasn’t. The hand on her shoulder when she was emotional as the 911 call was played. The way he speaks to her. The way he has fought over seemingly small things that are actually about her dignity, privacy, physical disability and mental health, including challenging how she would be transported to court and trying to protect private conversations at the defence table. And then I discovered this isn’t entirely new territory for him. Back in 1989, Reddington represented Therese Rogers, a woman who had endured serious abuse from her partner. He successfully argued that the PTSD caused by that abuse rendered her temporarily insane when she unalived him, reportedly the first successful use of that argument in Massachusetts. Decades later, he represented another woman in a case involving battered woman syndrome, arguing that she had acted to protect herself and her family. It’s watching a lawyer who, after 50+ years in criminal defence, still seems capable of seeing the human being sitting next to him when the rest of the world may only see the allegation. You don’t have to agree with his case. You don’t have to agree with every argument he makes. And you certainly don’t have to have decided what you think the verdict should be. But you can recognise exceptional advocacy when you’re watching it. The preparation. The instinct. The fight. And, perhaps most importantly, the humanity. At 75.

You are NOT alone! 😴⁣ ⁣ I’m Brooke a Pediatric NP 👋🏼 Follow @simplywell.baby to learn more about your baby or toddler.⁣ ⁣ It’s common for babies to nap on their caregivers, especially when they’re small & when they’re not feeling well as older babies or toddlers.⁣ ⁣ 🙅🏻‍♀️It does not lead to a spoiled baby. ⁣ ⁣ 💁🏿‍♀️It may allow your baby to get a good nap. ⁣ ⁣ 🙅🏼‍♀️It is not your baby manipulating you. ⁣ ⁣ 💁🏾‍♀️It might be comforting for your baby. They are able to hear the familiar sound of your heartbeat. ⁣ ⁣ 🙅🏽‍♀️Is not safe if you are napping too. You need to monitor them. Set yourself up with a television show or a good book that you’ve been wanting to read. ⁣ ⁣ 💁🏻‍♀️They will be outgrown. Many babies outgrow contact naps between 4 & 8 months of age.   3. The newborn smell 👶🏻👶🏼👶🏽👶🏾👶🏿 👋🏼Hi, I’m Brooke a Pediatric NP. Follow @simplywell.baby to learn more about your baby. 👃🏻A study published in 1987 found that 90% of mothers could recognize their newborn by smell alone. Multiple other studies have been completed with similar findings. 👃🏼Research shows that there are approximately 130 natural chemicals that cause a newborns scent. However, the leading cause of a baby’s scent is still not completely understood. It may be sweat glands & it may be leftover scent from the vernix. 👃🏽According to research the newborn scent triggers a dopamine response. Dopamine is sometimes called the “happy hormone”. 👃🏾Dopamine is made by your body and then used by your nervous system to send messages, as a neurotransmitter. Dopamine affects: -Motivation -Heart rate -Sleep -Mood -Pain processing and more. 👃🏿Research suggests that smelling your newborns head can also help with bonding. 👇🏼Do you sniff your baby’s head?
