  2. I know this topic is uncomfortable for a lot of people but it remains our number one asked question in our DM’s - autism and periods. It’s so important to have these conversations because parents are terrified for their special needs daughter to start her period - I know I was! The week before (PMS week) is a lot of emotional highs/lows and behaviors we usually don’t see from Presley (it’s usually a rough week at school) and then the next week is a lot of creating peace in our home, proper rest, and nutrition. It’s been a learning journey for my husband and I but we get better every month at handling all the things during this time of the month - and you will too! 🥰🥰 A few things that helped us: - talk to your doctor about different options - some families choose to go the birth control route to eliminate periods (do what you need to do - no judgement) - period underwear - disposable period underwear - a bidet for your toilet - a loofah with a LONG handle to help with washing - I had to learn Presley would get headaches and cramps before she could tell us - so I made sure to have liquid ibuprofen on hand. - chocolate - duh! - a weighted heating pad to rest on the stomach - a hot shower in the morning and a hot Epsom salt bath at night I hope this helps! What can seem scary will become your new normal and you will ROCK it! You got this mom and dad! 💜💜💜💜💜

  2. One morning this week the elevator wouldn’t come to our floor. I’m standing there with my girls. Matt calls: “I’m stuck behind a garbage truck. I’m going to be late to bring you the car” And one of my girls says, “Why is everything bad happening this morning?” That’s it. That’s the reflex. Something goes wrong and our brain looks for a culprit. But blame is usually just stress looking for somewhere to land. It feels productive. It isn’t. So now instead of: “Why this? Who did this?” I’ve started asking: “What needs to happen next?” Because not everything has a villain. Sometimes it’s just life happening.

  3. At the end of a weekend of them fighting like animals… I am reminding myself they’re also each other’s forever. In the short term, sibling conflict can feel like the absolute worst. But in the long term, every fight is practice: for learning boundaries, handling big emotions, and finding their way back to one another - without us always playing referee, taking sides, or putting the weight on one child. The best way I think to foster that bond? Helping them believe they’re safe with each other - even when they’re fighting. Instead of rushing to separate or “fix it,” I’ll try narrating: “You both want that last ice pop. Uch that’s hard. I know you guys can figure out a way through it.” Even if I eventually step in, the first message is: you two can get through this together. The goal isn’t zero arguments. It’s kids who trust they can fight and still come back to each other.

Multiple other studies have been completed with similar findings. 👃🏼Research shows that there are approximately 130 natural chemicals that cause a newborns scent. However, the leading cause of a baby’s scent is still not completely understood. It may be sweat glands & it may be leftover scent from the vernix. 👃🏽According to research the newborn scent triggers a dopamine response. Dopamine is sometimes called the “happy hormone”. 👃🏾Dopamine is made by your body and then used by your nervous system to send messages, as a neurotransmitter.   2. “The real danger is not that computers will begin to think like humans, but that humans will begin to think like computers.” Sydney Harris I don’t find as much value in social media as I used to these days, mostly because it has become severely perverted by AI which has majorly taken out much of the authenticity and creativity. Don’t get me wrong, there are some things that I do still find helpful, and there are some genuine humans and creators out there that are still sharing wonderful wisdom and beautiful artwork and creativity, but more and more, a lot of the content is becoming like an overwhelming digital slop or “junk food”. Not to mention the amount of harm that it’s doing to our kids and parents just keep handing over these devices, with an illusion of “parental controls” not understanding that really doesn’t make much of a difference in terms of what it’s doing to your child’s brain and the risks that exist either way with putting the weight of these devices onto their shoulders. You won’t find me spending as much time on here, or posting nearly as much at all as I used to, as I’m pouring more of my time and energy into my family and my community, where I just think it matters more.   3. This topic will always be near and dear to my heart. Parents, I can’t stress enough how important it is to allow your children to develop a tolerance for boredom. There are so many benefits, but one of the main things that they will gain, by not being wired for addiction to tech from an early age, is simply the ability to be able to connect with other human beings and function in the real world without constantly seeking dopamine distraction, which alone, is priceless. And before you come at me, I do understand that certain technology has made it more manageable for parents of children with disabilities, where these statements would not apply in the same way. If there’s anything I’ve learned in the last 16 years of parenting, it’s that kids don’t feel safe because you shield them from the oppression and injustice of the world.   They feel safe because you stand up against it.  Children are some of the most marginalized people in our society; they are inherently drawn to justice. Raising your baby in an environment of liberation is good for your baby! And while linking liberation struggles to sleep is in some ways it tongue in cheek, in other ways it’s not. Most Western narratives around #infantsleep reflect the demands of colonial capital more than they reflect the needs of infants (or their parents). It’s no coincidence that the field of developmental psychology and “parenting experts” (most of whom were yt men who had no direct experience parenting) flourished contemporaneously with industrial capitalism. Most of the “sleep training” theories that still haunt us today ultimately serve colonial capitalist demands for worker productivity more than anything else, and rely on us internalizing the message, from our earliest moments, that biologically and developmentally appropriate needs for connection don’t matter or must be “trained” out of us. Colonial / industrial capitalism has spent a lot of effort fracturing kin networks into individual consumers, leaving new parents alienated from tradition and support and vulnerable to myths that further its agenda: that we cannot trust our instincts, that we are ultimately alone and only responsible to ourselves, that the solution for most things is consumption. It’s continuing to rely on these message to currently manufacture consent for g3noc*de. Disrupt it. Your baby will thank you. As someone who’s done a lot of organizing with children, I get asked “how do you do it?” a lot. At root these questions are testament to the way in which caregiving creates in us a drive to build a world that gives more care. But long work hours, limited childcare, and household responsibilities make finding time for organizing meetings, or even finding the right organizing meetings to go to, let alone participating in direct action that might get you arrested, feel virtually impossible for the average parent. This is where I think it’s important to challenge us to get back to basics about how we are in community in the first place. Learning how to radically be in community is a potent political act in an industrialized, capitalist culture that has eroded collectivism and connection in favor of individualism and isolation, that has siloed us into “nuclear” families who are responsible only to ourselves. It is the kind of work that will get us ready for the world to come, the world we or our children or our children’s children will have to build on the remains of the unsustainable empires that now teeter on the verge of collapse, because in the end it is the only world that can be. You know the phrase, “we keep us safe?” This is the work that allows that to be more than a slogan. Because all the organizing in the world is for naught if at the end of the day we don’t actually know how to care for each other. As kids get older, the possibilities for more “traditional” political mobilization become more accessible. But it’s always easier if you already are rooted in a community who can support you in it.   2. Not gonna lie, I’m really excited for this new space! Neuroticmom happened accidentally and it evolved and grew over time. Because it wasn’t planned, I would purchase new baking items as needed then chuck them in a drawer or cupboard somewhere. Over the last three years it became an organized DISASTER! (only organized because I knew exactly where everything was even though each drawer and cupboard was a total and complete mess! 🙈) But now I have had time to organize every last little detail and I’m truly excited to start baking and decorating cakes again.

  3. WE GOT THE HOUSE! And all I know is I am in love with that yellow door. 💛 We didn’t get to pick any of the finishes but I don’t care. I love it and I can live in it comfortably until our *other* house is done. This house will be fully completed in January, including the basement. (It has a loft, too!)   2. Last week, Grace saw the neurologist who told us she was a *textbook case* of a puppy who indeed had distemper. I know we told you we got multiple negative distemper tests, and it’s true- we did. But as it turns out, she was likely done actively shedding the virus by the time she came into the care of our rescue on 6/3, therefore providing a negative result. It definitely makes sense with all the symptoms she had, some of which will be with her lifelong now (her little head bob and body tics, for example) The neurologist doesn’t anticipate those things worsening over time, which is really great news. Currently, all her puppy teeth are all falling out like CRAAAAZY and a bunch of weird-looking distemper teeth are coming in their place. Just another strange side effect of this disease for pups who get it as their adult teeth are developing. We also just sent in another stool sample today, because she’s still not over that fun (🫠) symptom. We’ll get there, though! Despite these things—right now— ✨our girl is thriving✨ She is up well over 3lbs now, she’s growing like a weed, she’s eating, has energy, loves to play, and loves to roll over for belly rubs and yell at us if we dare lock her cute self in a pen. All I know is that the puppy I met 4 weeks ago who I thought was dying in my arms? I don’t know her. Gracie is a fighter, now going by the title: *Survivor* (cue destiny’s child🎶) In honor of Grace’s littermates who weren’t as fortunate as her…can we commit to educating ourselves, our friends, our social reach about the risks/dangers and perpetuation of harm when supporting a breeder like the one Grace came from?   3. I guess you could call this *the birth story* reel. We have fostered 40 some dogs over the last few years, a lot of puppies, and lately- mamas & pups who had just given birth. However we have never ever done this from the jump, fostering a pregnant mom and having the pups born at our house. I was—to put it lightly— terrified. But still secretly really had it in my heart to do it sometime…and here we are. Sharing about this experience and how it’s been/and how it continues to go is important to me. If I can help anyone feel a little bit more confident that you could do this too—then it’s worth it. If more fosters step up who are willing to get a pregnant mom off the street/out of the shelter, we can save lives and also help to slow down the seemingly endless cycle. Just remember rescue takes many forms. There are dogs sitting in shelters who seem aggressive but really just need love/decompression, there are elderly dogs, there are street dogs getting pregnant every few months, there are puppies galore.   2. Yesterday, a young child approached my disabled child using her walker and violently shook it forwards and backwards. It happened in the span of a few seconds, and we went from having a relaxing day of pumpkin picking to spending the entire rest of the day at the emergency department and finding out her femur is fractured by the fall. The kid was young, maybe 6 or 7. The parent was right there, as was I. I screamed, the other parent grabbed him by the back of his shirt to pull him away. But the damage was done. For all the talk about "inclusion" that is led by usually nondisabled parents, I never see anyone but disabled people talking about this issue. Do not EVER touch people's aids. I am completely fucking sick of it, and fucking tired of my daughter being traumatized by total strangers just commandeering her wheelchair. But the violence yesterday takes the cake.   3. Three Quick Reminders About Ableism: 1. "Special needs" do not exist. It's a fictional meaningless term born out of ableism's desire to make accessibility and inclusion exceptional and rare. 2. Mobility is not a hierarchy. Walking is not "better" than rolling. The best way to get around is the way that Is accessible and safe for your body. 3. Say disabled, it isn't a bad word. "But I am a special needs parent and I don't know how to identify my labor I expend for my child?" - I see you, but, language at the expense of disability is not the answer. You're a parent of a disabled kid, you might be a "medical mom" (which focuses on the parent's role as advocate and part home doctor/nurse), and above all: your identity is not co-opting your child's disability which is its own unique experience. Mobility support or not, it's not a hierarchy. The "best" method of getting from point A to point B is the one that is accessible and safe for your body. That might be walking, it might be rolling. It might be any other variation thereof. Wheelchairs and walkers are not sad, but ableism is. Not sure what to call disability? #SayDisabled.   2. Let's talk boundaries. Setting limits/boundaries/rules does not mean you need to be mean or punishing. Remember, YOU are the one creating the rule so you can do what you want with it. THERE ARE NO RULES ABOUT MAKING RULES 😜EXCEPT THAT THEY MUST BE CLEAR AND HAVE FOLLOW THROUGH. Always, make sure that your child understand what's expected of them and what happens if the rule is broken before implementing it into your routine. A clear rule outlines natural consequences. For example, "we go outside in regular clothes. If we are wearing a costume, we can't go out until we change." when the child repeats back "but I want too.." I'll say something like "I know, I wish I could let you but that's the Rule." I allow the rule to become almost an imaginary person in our household. Now, the follow through must happen. There is no need to fight or yell. Just stick to the limit in a neutral, calm manner and if that means that we stay inside for the first day while he tests the limits for costume wearing out of the house, that's OK. Setting boundaries is difficult in the beginning and takes time to finesse. For complete transparency know that all of the curriculum, supplies and books you see here were all purchased by me with a monthly budget because everything adds up if I don’t take advantage of sales through out the year 😬 I am a regular homeschooling mama that works part time to cover some of the costs of homeschooling. I am blessed to have a job that I can work from home because my boss is super lenient and forgiving (it’s my husband, he’s my boss 🤭). But he likes to remind me I’m actually HIS boss sooo a win is a win 🏆 Anyways, here are some REALISTIC and PRACTICAL tips that have worked for me in providing the best and well rounded education to my kiddos without breaking the bank: ✨ take advantage of sales. Avoid paying whole price if you can. ✨ if you have multiple kids and planning on reusing materials, don’t write directly on consumables. If you have to, see if you can purchase a digital version so you can print for future kiddos. ✨ if you have an ink efficient printer, invest in digital copies. Usually it’s cheaper and you can save a lot of money by printing and prepping on your own. ✨ shop local thrift stores for books. I have found so many good ones by doing this. 80% of my books in my home library consist of books I’ve thrifted over the years. ✨ thrift books, abe books and eBay are all great sources to buy used books. eBay is my favorite place because they usually have buy 3 get 1 free and each book is usually priced at $3 ✨ check out marketplace on FB for gently used curriculum or books. Some mamas are very generous as to how they price their items as long as you assume the shipping costs. Mamas, did I miss anything?
