  3. I was doing this for over 7 years and didn't realise it was causing me so many extra tangles 😭 And that is... Bending over the bath to wash my hair !   2. Top curly hair tips for creating more volume ✨ 1. Use a lightweight leave in conditioner or curl cream, something that’s going to hydrate your curls without weighing it down. You may need to experiment with the amount of product you use to find that perfect balance between volume/keeping the frizz at bay. I used the @curlsmith_official Weightless Air Dry Cream. 2. Brush your hair up and away from your head. This is critical to ensuring your curls are lifted from the roots and do not end up flat to your scalp. 3. Use a volumising mousse and don’t forget to apply this to your roots. My favourite is the @johnfriedauk Frizz Ease Curl Reviver Mousse. 4. Diffuse your hair upside down (and all directions - side to side/right way up!) This will ensure your hair has lots of movement. 5.   3. Top tips for high definition curls! ✨ These are a selection of the top styling techniques that give me super defined, spiral curls every washday 🙌🏼 💜 Start off with soaking wet hair. This is key to avoiding frizz - apply more water throughout the styling process if you need to. 💜 Rake in a moisturising curl cream (something which will feed your thirsty hair and get rid of any dryness/frizz!) and a strong hold gel which will give you a good cast. 💜 Use a Denman brush (or your favourite styling brush) to brush through your curls and add some definition. 💜Finger coil your top layer. Only doing your top layer is a great hack and saves so much time - this only takes me 10 minutes! 💜 Hover diffuse (check out my diffusing reel for more info on this method). This is a great technique to make sure you so don’t disturb your curls or create any frizz. 💜When 100% dry, you should have a great cast going on. Scrunch out the crunch with an oil or a serum. 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝘁 𝗱𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀? 👉🏽 Your hair is made of the protein keratin. 👉🏽Keratin is a sulphur-rich protein with ‘disulphide bonds’ holding the protein strands together. Through normal wear and tear or use of chemicals and heat your hair strands get holes in them (damaged areas). Protein treatments fill in these holes with protein, so essentially it’s a patch job that boosts the strength of your hair. 👉🏽This is why people who colour & chemically treat their hair regularly use protein treatments (the top tier protein treatments are recommend for strengthening bleached & very damaged hair). 𝗧𝗼𝗼 𝗺𝘂𝗰𝗵 𝗼𝗳 𝗮 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴? 👉🏽Stronger or weaker do not equal good or bad or vice versa. It totally depends on what your hair needs at the time. 👉🏽If you overuse protein or use strong protein treatments too often (when you may not need them if your hair isn’t damaged), you may find that your hair feels stiff, rough & may break. This is basically when you use protein treatments and the protein sticks to the outside of the hair shaft. This can result in your hair feeling brittle and rough to touch - some people refer to this as ‘protein sensitivity’. 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗳𝗶𝘅 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀: ✅Opt for a lower strength of protein treatment to help reduce this feeling ✅Reduce the frequency you use protein treatments ✅Use a non-protein based conditioner after your protein treatment to remove that ‘rough’ feeling & soften your hair ✨𝗣𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆✨ I love using protein treatments weekly from the ‘middle tier’ as my hair is partly coloured & bleached.   1. Wearing that tight bun every f day for months on end is not beneficial to your hair growth 😭 trust me! I was in a pretty bad place during lockdown and basically got to a point where caring for my hair seemed pointless. Who would see it? No one. Did I need to wash and style it? What's the point? I'll put it in a bun for a month and let it get dry as hell. 🙃 Honestly, I know I was unwell because today I WOULD NEVER. Then from there I was so accustomed to that hairstyle it was all I wore for about a year. Just buns, nothing else unless it was a special occasion. The result? BREAKAGE. After months of moisturising and oiling my edges daily, and taking special care with my ends, I've been able to see the damage reverse. The lesson I learned was to switch up my hairstyles throughout the year, some days it's a center part, some days a low puff, other days a pineapple and yes I do still wear buns, just not everyday!   3. I thought I'd try something a bit different from my usual microfiber towels this week. I was kindly gifted this cute towel from @teeowels 🦉 It's made from organic cotton t-shirt material and is a fantastic alternative to regular bathroom towels, which can be quite rough and drying on our natural curls. 👩🏽‍🦱 Since I switched to using microfiber and tshirt style towels over regular ones, my wash day results have improved significantly. Before, I would take off the turban and have a dry frizzy mess to deal with after I spent so much time detangling and deep conditioning 🥲 After the switch, I noticed all of the points above. ⬆️⬆️⬆️ I really liked the feel of this towel, and of course that it's organic.   1. “How do I protect my curls overnight?” 😴 here are three ways: 1. Silk scrunchie (@onlycurlslondon) & silk pillowcase (@veyesilk) 2. Pineapple protector (also from Only Curls) 3. Satin bonnet Protecting your curls overnight is key is making sure they last into days 2, 3 and beyond. I personally use methods 1 & 2 together & I’m now at a point in my ‘hair journey’ that I don’t need to refresh my hair the next morning. If you need to refresh your hair the next morning, simply take the scrunchie off, let your hair settle for 10-15 mins (don’t touch it or do anything to it), spritz on a bit of water and add a tiny bit of leave in and/or gel & diffuse if you need 💖 Which method do you use? ⤵️

  2. 👩🏾‍🦱 Like lots of other people bored in quarantine/lockdown from March I picked up a new hobby: I started doing my hair and trying to get it back to a healthy state (something I had attempted & quit various times over the last 7 years as you can see by the left pictures of the SECOND time I got my hair chemically relaxed). 📸 At some point in late March, I just randomly started posting pictures of my washday on my page (I didn’t even bother to make a separate insta for this purpose like lots of other people do 🤣) because I thought it would be something I did for a week or two and then gave up on again but it’s been 7 months & I’m still here and still enjoying it. ✂️ I’ve learned so much through the accounts I’ve followed, I’ve been able to help people with their own hair queries so that they can hopefully experience less frustration going through the process than I did & I’ve (virtually) met so many lovely people behind the accounts. 🎞 *SO* The upshot is that I’ve decided to keep this account *just* for documenting curls. If you’re one of the 100 friends or friends of friends I had on this page before lockdown, I’ve followed you from my new page so feel free to unfollow this one unless you want to see purely curly content/pictures of washday. *You’ve been warned!* ❤️

  3. I quit CGM 2x before modifying the method & sticking with it!! I constantly see posts from people stressing about following the rules of CGM to the letter. Trying to juggle all of the rules AND find products that complied with all the #CGM rules was a big part of why I quit before. SO here are the #CGMrules that I break: 1. ❌ I don’t cowash. It is just not feasible for me living in London/Oxford- both have hard water. I tried it for a few months when I started; it left my hair over-moisturised and my scalp irritated. If you identify with this, try switching to a gentle shampoo instead & remember to clarify often. 2. ❌ I use water soluble silicones. I find that they work in my hair and since I don’t cowash but use a gentle shampoo instead, it’s pretty easy to cleanse them out of my hair. 3. ❌ I use products with ‘harsh’ alcohols (alcohol denat., isopropyl alcohol etc) if this ingredient is far down the ingredients list. Lots of products require trace amounts of harsh alcohols for formulation or preservation reasons. As long as this ingredient is at the end/near the end of the ingredient list this isn’t the biggest deal. 4. ❌ I use oils. I use oils to seal the hair strand (through LOC styling which gives me shine) and I use oils to pre-poo. Again, because I use a gentle shampoo, rather than cowashing, and I clarify often with an SLS shampoo this doesn’t cause me any issues. 5. ❌ I clarify with harsh sulphates (in chelating shampoos) more than would be considered strictly ‘necessary’. I find that products build up in my hair quickly/minerals in the water build up so I need to remove them often. 6. ❌ I use heat to diffuse. Without this, I’d be getting on the tube and going to work with wet hair. I find this extremely uncomfortable (esp in London during winter). Diffusing with low heat isn’t the end of the world. 7. ❌ I occasionally straighten my hair using a silicone heat protector. You’re supposed to be able to enjoy your hair & for me, that means changing up my look. At the end of the day, the method has to work for you- not the other way round! What rules do you break? ⤵️

  2. UPDATE Things haven't been great...when I get quiet it is because something is happening... Since yesterday I have been having pain back in my spine and today also where my liver is. A very weird sensation in my liver that is hard to explain. As my McMillan nurse told me on the phone today, I am very in tune with my body and sensitive to everything that happens to it. They are going to discuss my case tomorrow and see if we have to change anything. Good news is that chemo is a go, my neutrophils levels went up to 1.1 so it can go ahead. I have mix emotions about it, I want to have chemo to save me from this beast growing inside me but also I know how rubbish I am going to feel so I am not looking forward to that. On a lighter not, I think I am going to postpone doing my hair pink and curly to when I feel a little better ☺️ Thank you so much for all the messages wishing me well, it feels my heart reading them!   3. C O - W A S H  R E V I E W  When I found out @onlycurlslondon launched a co-wash I was so excited I just had to try it! They kindly #gifted me the co-wash and I've been testing it out on my curls recently. Firstly the co-wash has the most gorgeous fresh citrus and coconut scent, it's not overpowering - I'm obsessed! The product is a creamy light consistency and I use around 4-6 pumps of this product. I found the co-wash to be quite cleansing (I washed my hair around day 7 so I did have some build up), it didn't strip away any moisture and was good to detangle with. The co-wash left my hair and scalp feeling moisturised and cleansed.  I would definitely recommend for curlies with dry hair or wanting a routine with no shampoo.
