  3. Alopecia Awareness with @ginaatinukeknight and @relightalopecia 🩵 Alopecia is an umbrella term for partial or complete hair loss from the scalp or elsewhere on the body and 2% of people globally are impacted by alopecia areata, a chronic autoimmune condition. There are several types of alopecia like alopecia totalis, the complete loss of hair on the scalp, alopecia universalis, the complete loss of hair on the scalp and body. And very normalized forms of alopecia like androgenetic alopecia popularly known as “male pattern baldness” even though it’s not exclusive to men. Many beauty standards emphasize long, flowing hair, especially for women. But regardless of gender, alopecia can affect self-image. Navigating this can be complicated. Not everyone seeks out treatment like steroids, topical creams, or hair transplants but they are available. And conditions like traction alopecia can be prevented by making sure that your braids or ponytails are not too tight. If someone with alopecia uses tools like eyebrow tattoos, wigs, or head coverings, that’s up to them. But we should also feel empowered not to. More and more people are being vocal about having alopecia which is shifting the narrative and challenging one-dimensional depictions. Alopecia can be difficult. Not because of the condition itself, but because of the assumptions, intrusive questions, stares, and rude comments we face. EXTRA CREDIT 📝 Do you or someone you know have alopecia? Did you know that it’s an umbrella term for hair loss and also specific conditions? How can we better support people with alopecia?

  3. "I'm Dean - known as @patchproblems on Instagram, and today I'm sharing my story with Changing Faces. "When I first noticed my hair falling out, I felt like I was losing a part of my identity. My confidence and self-esteem seemed to vanish along with my hair.   "I've had alopecia areata since I was ten - with small bald spots appearing and disappearing throughout my life.   "Four years ago, I lost every single hair on my body. It was very traumatic. It seemed like nobody around me understood the emotional turmoil I was going through. I constantly found myself battling the misconception that 'it's just hair.'   "I became anxious and depressed, withdrawing from social interactions because I felt like an outsider. I was convinced that people were talking about me behind my back, and this self-imposed isolation only worsened my mental state. "Part of what held me back from seeking help or sharing my struggles was the toxic notion engrained in society: that 'I am a man – I can’t talk about mental health, I can’t be bothered by something as trivial as losing my hair.' These expectations weighed heavily on my shoulders. "Luckily, I discovered a lifeline. A social media group run by @alopeciauk. In this group, I encountered some of the most inspirational individuals I've ever come across. Reading their stories helped me realise that I wasn't alone. "As my confidence grew, I decided to create a social media page about my journey. The response and support I received was incredible. It was this online community that gave me a sense of belonging. I finally felt heard and understood. My mental health began to improve significantly.   “While I’ve come a long way in my journey with alopecia and mental health, it’s not always smooth sailing. There are days where I still struggle, moments where I question myself and times when the battles feel uphill. "It’s ok to not be ok. But it’s crucial to get the proper support you need. Together, we can break down the stigma surrounding men’s mental health and alopecia." Link in bio to continue Dean's story.   #Alopecia #AlopeciaAreata #AlopeciaAwarenessMonth

  2. I put some makeup on earlier in a half arsed attempt to make myself feel better. Since this was the first time in a while that I'd actually got ready, I opened my phone and siezed the opportunity to take some pictures. The moment I saw myself, my eyes welled up. I am really struggling with my hair at the moment. I am less than thrilled by my regrowth and I feel so so guilty admitting it. I have dreamt for months of my hair coming back, and now that it is here, I am unsure how to process it. I had just adjusted to wearing my wigs, I had come to terms with my patches and I was absolutely loving being a part of the alopecia community. This stage of regrowth feels like a whole new chapter and suddenly everything is changing out with my control again. I don’t know how to grow out a buzz cut. I don’t know how to wear my wigs with hair underneath. I don’t know how long I will “fit in” the online alopecia community, after all it now just looks like I have a questionable hair style rather than alopecia. I always thought that regrowth would mean the end of alopecia related anxieties but it has just opened up a whole new can of worms. I appreciate what a privileged position I am in, to be experiencing regrowth, and how many of you would kill to be in my position. Please don’t get me wrong, I am still extremely grateful, I am just trying to process this change. Can anyone relate? . . . #alopecia#alopeciaareata#hairloss#alopecian#femalehairloss#alopeciajourney#patchyhair#nohair#hairlossjourney#bald#baldgirl#buzz#buzzcut#girlswithbuzzcuts#buzzcutgirl#wig#wigwearer#wiggirl#autoimmunedisease#mentalhealth#bodyimage#hair#alopeciaawareness#alopeciauk#alopeciasupport

  1. I’m scared to share this. My heart is pounding as I write, because I’m not sure I’m ready to show this part of myself. But I’ve realised something: if I want to keep healing, I need to be honest. And maybe, just maybe, my honesty can remind someone out there that they’re not alone. Watching myself change in the mirror has been quietly devastating. Alopecia Universalis didn’t ask for permission, it arrived uninvited, taking pieces of me I didn’t even know I was holding so tightly. And yet… here I am. Still me. Still whole. Slowly learning to see beauty in the places I once only saw loss. This isn’t just about hair. It’s about identity, confidence, and the fragile parts of me I didn’t realise were tied so tightly to my reflection. Alopecia stripped the surface away, but in the space it left behind, I’ve found a strength I never knew existed, a quiet courage that I can call my own. I know there are others out there hiding their pain, carrying it silently like I have. Please know this: you don’t have to anymore. Even in the parts you think are broken, there is beauty. Even in the healing, there is power. Even in fear, there is hope. If you need someone who understands, my messages are open. I am here. You’re not a burden, and you’re never alone. And finally, a heartfelt thank you to Stacy and @baldmothertucker from @mybeautiful_wigs for saving me on Friday - when it felt like I had lost hope and the world had ended. Your kindness helped me find light again, and I’ll never forget that. ✨ And to my mum, who stood beside me through every tear, and the few beautiful souls who supported me when I couldn’t see my own strength - thank you. Your love carried me through. 🤍 THIS IS ME! #AlopeciaStory #LivingWithAlopecia #AlopeciaCommunity #womenshairloss #changingfaces #womenempowerment #redefiningbeauty #queenofbeauty #AlopeciaUniversalis #BaldIsBeautiful #BeautyBeyondHair #OwnYourLook #baldgirls #baldgirlsdoitbetter #modelsofdiversity #hairlossinwomen #AlopeciaUniversalis #wigs #wigwearer #humanhairwigs #AlopeciaAwareness #SelfLoveJourney #HealingOutLoud #youarenotalone #thisisme

  2. We never really know how much a strong woman has had to hide just to keep being seen. Bea is one of the most beautiful people I know. Beautiful in presence, in energy, in the way she lights up a room. But for years, she hid something no one could see: alopecia. I have known Bea for about seven years, and in that time I have seen how deeply it has affected her. The way she looks at herself, the way she connects with people, even the way she moves through the world. While everyone praised her body, her face, her confidence, she was quietly fighting a battle that no one noticed. I remember a conversation we had back when everyone was talking about what a “real woman” is. As if being a woman could ever be defined by one type of body, one look, one idea. And she said something I will never forget: “People put me in this box of being the pretty one, like that protects me from everything. But they have no idea what it feels like to wake up and fight to feel like a woman when the mirror shows you someone you do not recognise.” That stayed with me. Because it is true, we do not know. We do not know what someone feels when they wake up, what they hide behind a smile, or how heavy it can be to look fine when inside they are falling apart. Today, seeing Bea free, showing up, being who she truly is, is one of the most beautiful things I have ever witnessed. Not because she has changed, but because she finally stopped hiding. And now she has decided to share her story to inspire and help other women who are living this in silence. Because courage is contagious. 💜 Follow Bea, see what she is sharing, and let yourself be moved by her strength. It is raw, it is real, and it is beautiful. @beagrinnell AlopeciaAwareness #AlopeciaCommunity #BaldAndBeautiful #AlopeciaWarrior #BeautyBeyondHair
