  2. Heads up: this is going to be a very self-congratulatory post but I want to indulge myself a little bit here… Over the weekend, I hit one hundred thousand followers here on Instagram, which is absolutely WILD 🍾🍾🍾 I’m so immensely grateful for the community here in the yarn-y corner of the internet and I appreciate the support I receive more than words can say. I’ve made friendships with people all over the world through knitstagram and it fundamentally changed the trajectory of my life so, truly, words fail to express how I feel about this. I started this account in 2019 a few months after I started knitting when I realised the best way for me to improve as a knitter and to make crafting friends was to get involved here. At first, it was immensely cringeworthy and it took a long time to find my flow with content creation. I still remember waiting until my housemate had gone to work to try and take photos because I couldn’t stand the thought of her finding out about all this haha! I never ever ever imagined what this account would do for me. When I started knitting, I fully expected to follow an academic career path (which, in hindsight, seems as much of a pipe dream haha!) and I never could have predicted that I’d still be doing this now — let alone starting a business out of it! I try not to focus on numbers or stats because doing so tends to lead me down a path of comparison with others which ends in poor self esteem, which then impacts my creative process. But this is a big number and I want to take a moment to acknowledge it, because sometimes you’ve got to celebrate a win. So, yes, thank you from the bottom of my heart for sticking around and for supporting my work. I especially want to thank all of the lovely people who have test knitted for me over the years, the friends and community I’ve found here on Instagram, and above all @fancy_a_yarn for helping me so much with tech editing/being my second brain since 2022 💗💗💗💗💗💗💗

  3. I don't often get sassy over such things because 1 minute is never enough time to go into the nuance of bigger issues like the ethics of high fashion so inevitably people will misinterpret what you say, often wilfully for the sake of their own ego.... BUT, the implication that crochet is a lesser art form than couture sewing really got my goat. And to imply that I'm just a silly little crocheter who doesn't know what they're talking about really riled me up. I could honestly write an essay on this topic, and as I am also a fashion historian I could also get that essay published in an academic journal if I so wished. But I don't want to do that. Because I have found that sort of academic institution to be elitist, ableist and out of touch. I'd rather we had an informed discussion here, where it is accessible to almost everyone, than write a paper that will be read by probably 50 people tops. But the issue with talking about these things in public internet forums is that the general abandonment of social etiquette we so often see online will inevitably enter the discussion. I think this person has misunderstood what I mean. Fair enough. I was deliberately being sensationalist for the sake of views. That's how the internet works. These short form video formats in particular thrive off of that stuff. But I also feel they are misinformed about how fashion works at the highest level. I accept I might be wrong about some things, this is not my area of interest or expertise after all. But to publicly put me down, whilst simultaneously reinforcing many of the misguided ideals I try to challenge here about the sexism, elitism and prejudice of the fashion industry is just petty and annoying. I wouldn't have responded if I didn't have a point to make. Crochet is just as much of an art form as 'couture'. If you're making your own crochet/knitting/sewing patterns, testing them, toileing them, refining them, altering them to be exactly how you want them and getting them to fit as fits your vision of the piece, then that's couture. You deserve that title just as much as a dead, white, French man, or a Nazi-sympathiser woman. WHOEVER YOU ARE. Continued in comments ⤵️
