  2. “When the Dark comes rising, six shall turn it back...” Today is 20 December—the eve of the Winter Solstice in the northern hemisphere & also the day on which Susan Cooper’s deeply eerie classic novel The Dark Is Rising (1972) opens. Will Stanton, the seventh son of a seventh son, is about to turn 11, but in the countryside around his home near the upper River Thames, something is very wrong. Snow threatens but will not fall. Rooks whirl above the trees. And the Walker is abroad... TDIR has been a huge book for me, as for millions of other writers & readers around the world. The first image here is the Puffin edition I had as a child: Michael Heslop’s chillingly uncanny image of Herne seen through psychedelic cross-hairs on a snowy field scared the daylights out of me then (& still does). Three years ago, the brilliant Simon McBurney & I adapted TDIR into a 12-part audio-drama for @bbcworldservice with @complicitetheatre. It took us a year to make & was a joy. Toby Jones, Harriet Walter, Paul Rhys & Simon himself starred, @tmebell creative-produced & Gareth Fry created an exceptionally immersive binaural soundscape. @johnnyflynnmusic, @landshapesluisa, @heloisesioleh & I wrote the original music, which includes Johnny’s haunting earworm of a main theme (that in my house still has us chanting “The toast, the toast is burning...” or “The door, the door is open...” etc). You can listen to our adaptation via @bbcsounds. If you listen to an episode a day starting today, then you’ll follow the novel’s own real time as it unfolds over the Solstice, Christmas and New Year. Link in my Linktree. Susan’s become a dear friend these past years. You can see us together here amid the wandering limbs of the Emmanuel Plane Tree. She’s just as you would imagine: calm, wise, kind, witty, powerful. Truly an Old One. Happy Solstice to you all, friends. It’s the turn of the year’s tide. Here’s to the Solar year to come & the rise of the light.

  3. Yesterday I found this jay’s wing feather, face-down in a little drawer inside a dusty old wooden chest in the attic. The feather was grey behind, but when I turned it over it was pin-bright, electric-bright: still zinging with that extraordinary blue—which I place in a colour-family along with glacial ice of a certain age, and Cherenkov radiation, which glows in underwater nuclear reactors when charged electrons move through the water at a speed greater than the phase velocity of actual light: the visual equivalent of a sonic boom. The chest belonged to my father, a physician: it had held at different times drugs (an old label for adrenaline was still stuck to the frame) and an apothecary’s set of powders for the prick-testing of allergies. Aged 10, I inherited it and began to use it to collect feathers I found. One of those was the jay feather. I have no memory of finding it, but the surprise of re-finding it some 35 years later will stay with me a long time. I wondered at its brightness—then recalled that jay-wing blue is structural, not pigmentary: an optical illusion of a sort. In fact, the feather’s pigment is actually brown—but we perceive it as blue because the nanostructure of each barb comprises light-scattering pocket-holes which absorb all but the ice-blue wavelength. This is, in theory, an ever-colour: as long as the feather is undamaged, the sun emits light and human eyes are there to see it, the feather will glow. Thus its undimmed iridescence across three decades of my life. Might we think of memories themselves in similar ways? Some memories are colourful at the time of their stamping, but fade to grey ghosts or wink out altogether over time. But others, perhaps, are fundamentally structural in their making; they are created of and in arrangements of space, and as such they are resilient to time’s dilapidations. I know that I can still remember not only each room of the house in which I lived as a child when I collected those feathers, but also each carpet pattern, painting, and door-handle with its ember of light. These curious, iridescent ever-memories are the ones we carry to the end, and perhaps beyond it.

  3. Dear Instagram How are you? Me? I’m okay thanks The day before the day before yesterday, or maybe the day before that I announced a new song & Double LP (the soundtrack to the Celyn Jones & Tom Stern film, The Almond & The Seahorse that stars @celyn_jones alongside @rebelwilson @charlottegainsbourg @trinedyrholmofficial @meera.syal - written by @kaiteoreillyo ) But I really feel I need to announce it some more I’m sure you feel the same - and that announcement is your middle name. There’s plenty of time to talk about the album - apologies in advance - as it’s not out till Feb (via @roughtraderecords ) But the film screens in cinemas in the US from last Friday 12/16/22 (details @ifcfilms or @madasbirdsfilms) In any case that’s all well & good but I’m mostly writing to you today as I just wanted to thank the musicians who played on the song Amen that was released on Thursday as I didn’t properly do that then - This recording appears courtesy of - @osiangwynedd on piano @kliphscurlock on drums & mastering, Stephen Black @sweetbaboomusic on bass & Drew Morgan @morgannoise on Cello - it was recorded & mixed by @alichant except some of the intro which I recorded with Kris Jenkins @doufus - but it’s otherwise based around a live studio take, You can watch a video for Amen shot by renegade cinematographer @ryan_eddleston_dop (who also took these photos during the video shoot) Outlaw film tycoon @dylgoch edited the video - link in bio - thanks both Also wanted to thank Akiko Stehrenberger @doyrivative for for the incredible film poster and sleeve illustration (pictured above) - see a book of her film posters at @hatandbeardpress if there’s any left Hope you’re somewhere warm and please honk your horns in support of the strikers G Ruff Annwyl Insta - crynodeb hollbwysig - cyfeiriad at gyhoeddiad blaenorol dradwy a geiriau o ddiolch uchod. Record ar y ffordd mis Chwefror - cân newydd allan rwan! Dolen uchod i bopeth gobeithio! Mwy o wybodaeth toc. Codiad ac amodau teg i’r streicwyr! Rhyddid o ormes a hir oes - Grief
