I was lucky enough to get hold of the latest Springbank sherry cask bottling from @nickollsperks and couldn't wait to crack it open and enjoy a dram in their cellar. Is it as good as the PX and the Palo Cortado that came before it? I'm not sure yet. It feels like this one needs a bit of time to open up, so I'll be revisiting this one in a month or so to see how it is! . . #Springbank #Amontillado

  2. Eureka! To celebrate 25 years of the Ardbeg Commitee, Ardbeg have released the Eureka! This bottling was created to 'capture the many taste preferences of the Committee’s thousands of members in a single dram'. During the 2023 Feis, Committee members gathered together at a top secret location on Ardbeg Day. 'Operation Smokescreen' as it was called, saw these 100 people, chosen from 15 different countries, try 5 different samples and share their thoughts, and flavour preferences. The resulting whisky, created by Dr Bill Lumsden and Gillian Macdonald, is a combination of Pedro Ximenez sherry casks and bourbon matured whisky made from roasted malt. People like peat and sherry. Who knew? Nose: Rock pools, pork crackling with apple sauce, chalky sweets, mixed nuts, olive wood with a herbal peat smoke. The official notes mentioned tarred roads, and that'd spot on! Palate: An initial rush of savoury flavours, leading into a sweet finish. Plum chutney, bitter dark chocolate, sea salt, dates, and caramel latte. The peat comes across on the finish as a medicinal aniseed mouthwash like flavour. This is unmistakably Ardbeg. It really reminds me of a more complex version of the Uigeadail, with a richer flavour. For me, this is the best committee release in a long while.   3. I'm back with another post about @lochlomondmalts , and this time, I'd like to talk about golf. Since becoming the official spirit of The Open Golf Championship, Loch Lomond has produced an array of bottles from their The Open Collection. Each year, they release an accessible, reasonably priced non-age statement, as well as a more premium single malt and occasionally the odd single cask. In recent years, the younger release has been matured in some interesting (mainly wine) cask types, including a Rioja finish in 2023 (pictured above), Claret wine casks in 2022, and Chardonnay wine casks for last years bottling. Two of my favourite Loch Lomond whiskies have come from this range. The first was a single cask they released in partnership with @ColinMontgomerie to celebrate the 2018 Carnoustie Open. The second is a 19 year old Claret wood finish made alongside golfer Darren Clarke, which produced one of the pinkest whiskies I've seen! This year's releases are about to hit shelves. I've seen them online, but I'm not sure if they're still under embargoe, so I won't ruin them here! It was a glorious afternoon … The advantage of working from home, or working remote as many people do nowadays, is that sometimes we can take a few hours to enjoy the snow and fresh air and then work until midnight. Yazzie @wildernessfit_retreats went backcountry skiing in the hills and I went for a less vigorous cross country ski across the moor and returned as the sun was setting. Well folks it's been a most beautiful ride and I can't believe that time has flown and I'm already saying my (temporary) farewells to my incredible team @thebalvenie but there you go... And what better time to do it than on #burnsnight which also happens to be my 7 year anniversary with @williamgrantuk. But as much as I love #whisky it's time to step back and start focusing on the new things to come, and perhaps put my feet up for a wee while before all of that takes place! I'll be passing my whisky baby onto a most fabulous replacement (to be announced soon) while I look towards taking care of the new bairn on the way. In the interim I leave you all with loads of whisky love and toasts on this chilly eve hoping you're keeping warm with perhaps some haggis and a wee nip or two of @thebalvenie. Irish Coffee is a classic cocktail served warm prepared with hot coffee, sugar, and Irish Whiskey 🥃 stirred and topped with thick cream. . This delicious recipe was invented in 1940’s by Joe Sheridan a chef turned bartender while was working in a restaurant & coffee shop in the Foynes airport, in Ireland. Joe decided to add Irish Whiskey to hot coffee to warm a group of American passengers disembarking on a cold and wet winter evening. The story goes that when an American passenger first drunk it he asked “Is it Brazilian coffee?” in which Sheridan replied “No, that’s Irish coffee”. . . We created something twisted on Irish Coffee back in the past at Mr Fogg’s Residence using a Royal Vienna Balance Coffee Maker which is a wonderful machine, not only does it make great brewed coffee but it is also a journey into science and a visual spectacle using gravity and vacuum principles. . . Happy Easter folks! 🐣 To celebrate the holidays I will opening this stunning Campbeltown Malts Festival 2024 limited release bottle which I was lucky enough to sample at last week’s @glenscotiamalts event in Glasgow. This delicious 9yo from Glen Scotia is unpeated and finished in Fino Sherry Casks. Light and floral with fruity orchard notes and still the subtle maritime flavours you would expect from Glen Scotia. The Fino cask finish brings a lovely sweet crisp taste to the dram with hints of peach. Of course there is that undeniable ‘Campbeltown Funk’ which I absolutely adore 😍. Top dram! This bottle should be released sometime next month with a limited number of bottles.
