  1. This is the half of the collaboration with @john_mullaney813 that I get to keep! After first properly meeting John at Northern Bowl at the beginning of the summer he had this excellent collaboration idea. He made two tucker bowls and sent them over (that was an exciting post day!) and I spent a little while doing some relief carving on them both. We exchanged them last weekend at #spoonfest and this is the one that will end up with my favourite soup in it tomorrow lunchtime! Although I always love a good craft swap, this felt much more like a very tactile conversation between craftspeople. I very much enjoyed the creative process and challenge of fitting the carvings to the objects, which was a new experience for me as usually I design the initial object around the intended decorations. Slightly more nerve-wracking too as I didn't want to ruin two already beautiful bowls! John's work is such a beautiful mixture of asymmetry, organic shapes, with really sturdy feeling design, it was a privilege to work with. This last weekend was my first spoonfest since 2016 and it was absolutely wonderful to see friends again and to meet loads of my favourite makers in person! Unfortunately I didn't manage to take any of my own pictures - alas not even a photo of the two tuckers together. Lots of lovely nerdy wood and spoon related conversations were had and some incredible woodworking was seen. Thanks to everyone who I met/chatted with and made it such a lovely time! Thanks also to John for suggesting such a lovely collaboration like this 💚 #bowlcarving #greenwoodworking #birch #chipcarving #reliefcarving #celticknot #knotwork #spiral #pictishspiral #experimentalarchaeology #earlymedieval #celtic #irish #zoomorphic #detail #collab

  2. Eventually some progress on the Kingshott inspired mitre plane build. I started this project back in the start of the year as an entry into the tooltrain competition. My thinking on anyone's individual attitude to this competition was to take your base level of competency and challenge your own limits. So, in effect a beginner or advanced maker can take up the challenge. So, as I have made many planes I decided to Strech my skills by giving myself the added struggle of miniaturisation and the complexity of the Norris style adjustment system in the build. Something I have not tried before. I have to admit this nearly beat me. How the guys I follow can consistently achieve superb work in miniature is beyond me. It is so difficult and the have my utmost admiration. My fist aattemp closely followed Kingshotts “plate, swivel and traveller” design. This was a challenge to make. I feel full size it would have been a robust proposition. But in miniature it felt too weak. So I rejected this method and tried to come up with a more robust alternative suitable for miniaturisation. I decided to upsize the swivel from 10mm to 15mm in diameter to increase seat stability and give a greater thread contact length for durability. I felt this was necessary due to use of the micrometre thread pitches. I could have left this as a 15mm solid post but felt the hard wood socket would deteriorate over time. So I decided to incorporate the lower cup bush bearing in the design so that the swivel could sit in a secure position socket wise. This also meant that it would be easy to replicate several replacement swivels that a user could effortlessly replace should the swivel thread or socket wear over time. Another improvement was to utilise aluminium bronze as the very hard-wearing bush and swivel material rather than brass. Additionally, if I decided to make a full-size version, I would make the spindle from 01 tool steel making this the alfa material for wear. The easily made swivel and traveller could then be sacrificial from a wear point of view. #tooltrain2022 #handtool #planemaking #infillplane
