  1. Yesterday I found myself wondering why women in their 60s looked so old when I was a small child?... and I don't think it was just because I was very young. In the early 1960s, according to the UK government's Office of National Statistics, the life expectancy of a woman was just over 70... plastic surgery was the preserve of the hyper rich... clothes for older women were often defined as age suitable and designed for invisibility. But somehow in 2026 the narrative of age appropriate dressing hasn't gone away...the slur of 'mutton dressed as lamb'...the internet's need to criticize women's clothing choices...the fear of being judged for 'dressing too young '...all of this still has power. Born in the early 1960s, my life expectancy is almost 90 and I have a 1 in 4 chance of living to 95... It's hardly surprising that I don't feel old ...that I don't want to dress for invisibility. Age appropriate dressing is a nonsense term... designed to make women smaller...more fearful of taking up space.. It can be very easy, if you spend time on social media, to feel as if everybody else has a life of wild excitement, lives in a beautifully curated home and wears stylishly, well put together outfits all the time...this is me this weekend...I've stayed at home, seen nobody ( I have work to do) and worn the same clothes for the last 2 days and haven't felt any need to put on makeup. My outfit is informed less by any idea of style and more to deal with a house where the main form of heating is a coal fire in one room...I'm wearing many layers 😆 One of the trends I really liked in 2025 was normalizing ordinary lives and ordinary homes.. people showing up authentically...a resistance to the hype curation, hyper consumption of some parts of social media ..I really hope it continues in 2026 and beyond.. The more of us that share our ordinary lives...our pragmatic outfits..our home with dog toys in the corner and clutter of the everyday..the more we normalize real lives. If your social media feed is full of images that make you feel that you're not good enough...that your life isn't good enough...that your home isn't good enough..the problem isn't you..it's judging ourselves against impossible hyper curation. Sooooo… I put this CLAUDETTE dress on and instantly felt fabulous and the hours upon hours of cutting, gathering, stitching, unpicking and restitching 26 metres of tulle (with double layers!!) were all forgiven. Thank you to @violettetannenbaum for her wonderful design and to the team at @taukomagazine for choosing me to be part of the #MakeAndShare crew for issue 10, out now! I made a size 2 (pattern goes up to size 9 which fits approx 64” hip), raised all the ruffle layers by 8cm as I have a long torso so I prefer a high waist over a dropped one and shortened the bottom ruffle to 85cm cos I’m only 5’5”! Also thank you to Charlotte at @newcrafthouse for cutting me 9.5 metres of 300cm extra wide tulle. (As I said in my last post, my first fabric purchase in 363 days! 🤓) I’d say this is my fourth most involved sewing project of my life - for anyone interested here’s the top three: 1. Friend Jade’s wedding dress, 2012 2. Pink satin suit, 2021 3.   2. I made a #TateRomper 🥳 I knew I wanted to make one of these as soon as I saw @smallmuseum_ and @jessilous_closet post about them! This fabric was kindly #gifted by @raystitch 💕 - I did try to choose something that wasn’t a check but just couldn’t NOT get this print when I saw it in person! It’s the Birdsong cotton poplin by Gingiber and was the perfect weight for this project. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I opted for the tie straps, cut a size 2 and used a 1.5cm SA on the bodice but otherwise sewed it as is. Im@not 100% happy with the pattern matching across the zip but couldn’t be bothered to do it again 🤷🏽‍♀️ It’s really comfortable to wear and swish around in! I wore it for dinner on my hotel trip last week then again to @allpointseastuk to watch the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and The Strokes which was probably not the best idea really because everyone knows jumpsuits and portaloos shouldn’t mix 😅 Managed it though! Ha ha ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ When I’d made it and went to write about it, I looked back at the original post and realised I’d basically copied the gingham one @smallmuseum_ made. Oh well, shows how strong the influence was 😂🖤🤍

  3. My railroad denim two piece is complete! (Swipe through to the end for original inspo that’s been hanging around on my Pinterest sewing board for years.) Finished the @fridaypatterncompany #IlfordJacket and am really happy with how it turned out! I made one for my brother in Christmas 2020 and forgot how enjoyable it is to sew. I used the straight sleeve but shortened it by 4cm and they had to be cut in two pieces as I squeezed this whole outfit out of 3 metres of fabric 😅 The pocket is the same as on the overalls. Again, overalls are @todayspattern #TP043 and the fabric for this outfit is 9.5oz railroad denim from @wildorchardsewing (similar heavier denim available at Merchant and Mills). Buttons are deadstock from @newcrafthouse Worn with an old RTW white t-shirt, jewellery mostly from @sweetpea_finejewellery and secondhand #PumaRSX trainers from @ebay_uk

Details and thoughts on my @thebargelloedit quilted vest… ✨bought this fabric with no clue what to make however this apricot and black combo spoke to me ✨ pattern is the @newcrafthouse Everyday Waistcoat ✨ I used some cotton linen from my stash and this gorgeous fabric from @thebargelloedit as the 2nd fabric, quilting both layers with some wadding. ✨ following the patterned fabric when quilting I think worked a treat. It gives a lovely effect on the outer fabric ✨ hand sewing the binding and French seaming was worth it, it’s given it a great finish and makes it fully reversible ✨ I wasn’t sure id wear a quilted vest but let me tell you, I’ve lived in it since making it and I will for sure be making another ✨no regrets making it in black… the versatility and styling options are endless. ✨ My fellow bees @miasartyfarty @thebettysilk & @tonyr.maker as well as other accounts I’ve seen later really inspired this make. ✨ head over to @thebargelloedit now… the fabric collection has a limited run and is having a massive sale as we speak.   3. I made a new dress 🧵 🪡 💃 I wanted to make a dress that could be smart enough to wear to work, but also fun enough to wear in my spare time. I was after a fabric with a black background so it would go well with back tights and I love this viscose I found from @lamazifabrics . The pattern is combo of two, plus a few hacks. I used the @deer_and_doe_patterns #myosotisdress , lengthened the main skirt piece, shortened the bottom skirt piece, took the bodice in to be fitted and added a side zip. I also hacked the pockets so that they attach to the waist seam as I hate flappy side seam pockets. Lastly, I used the sleeve from the v8772 shirt, which I hacked to have more volume at the cuff. I like it so much I even wore it for a work from home day, as a new dress deserves to be worn!   2. Uhhh half stone award in one week?! Don’t mind if I do 😉💅🏻. This is an absolute fluke really, I weighed a week ago just after a few big days of Christmas eating so I guess I was bloated and had water weight. But still I’m majorly proud of how back on track I am and what a massive loss this is in just one week 😱😱. I don’t think I’ve ever lost this much in a week, even on my first week back on plan before 🤭🤭🤭

  3. Today’s food 😍, Breakfast was alpen lights (HEB). Lunch was nuggie Katsu with 5 syns worth of quorn nugs, and 2.5 syns of S&B golden curry. Dinner was speedy curry and then ending the day with two fibre bars (I’m addicted to these) for 3.5 and 4 syns. Ending exactly on 15 syns 😝😝😝

There’s plenty of reasons why people feel the need to repeat outfits. ⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ ‘We live in a world where MPs are mocked for wearing the same dress more than once’ ( @laurenbravo for Grazia). ⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ Social media has plenty of great benefits but creating pressure on people to keep up with trends is not one. The more we can normalise repeating outfits the less pressure people will feel. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ The pressures to constantly have new outfits has detrimental effects on the amount of clothes that are destined for landfill. On average, a garment is only worn 7 times (@barnardosretail study). With roughly £140 million worth of clothing ends up in landfill every year. ⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ It’s time to stop thinking people care and normalise rewearing your clothes. Yesterday non essential shops in England have reopened after months of being closed. ⁣ ⁣ Before we rush out please remember that just because they’re open doesn’t mean you need to go - the virus is still out there. Please don’t put anyone’s life at risk for any non essential clothes. Please respect the social distancing and keep washing your hands and keep sanitising!⁣ ⁣ If you have the means to support local, independent and charity shops instead of fast fashion retailers that would be really great. These guys need our support more than ever! ⁣ ⁣ I understand that the shops reopening can be very enticing but please remember to question your purchases before you buy! This applies to buying new and second hand! ⁣ ⁣ A lot of the time, we do not need these new items of clothing.   2. This is Anwar. A 30 year old Palestinian English teacher, living in Gaza, @anwarghilan. Anwar's family are his entire world. Especially his baby boy, Akram. Akram was just 5 months old when Israel began it's horrific campaign in October of 2023. Since then, he has spent his young life surrounded by dangers no child should ever have to face. Anwar and his family of 12, parents, sisters and brothers, now live in a tent in Rafah, after they were forced to flee the bullets and the bombs that destroyed their house, and their city.  Like so many, they've nothing left but each other - and an absolute determination to survive.   1. Whipped up a @mccallpatterncompany #m7969 yesterday because I was so inspired by @pippy_eve a few months ago when she made a dress and top and I’m so glad I did- what a beautiful pattern! Rather than a dress which is what the pattern is originally for, I hacked it into a blouse ✨ by shortening the skirt. I left the bodice as it was and decided not to lengthen as I wanted to keep the peplum effect! I’ll be honest, it was a bit touch and go for a hot second there, but I’m so happy with the result. Already planning the others I’ll be making!! Navy linen anyone?! 🤤 I’ve been loving @atelierbrunette again and used their cotton gauze-, which I bought from @lamazifabrics -it is SO DREAMY. So soft and but with a bit of structure which is perf for the sleeves. The sleeeeves of my dreeeams! I’m obsessed 👍🏼 what do you think? Will you be trying this pattern?
