  1. I first shared our journey with Wilby last year. I came on stories after his developmental check (saved to highlights). I was upset. I mentioned the possibility of him being autistic and my inbox began with the questions asking why I was upset when autism is a gift. This is my page, one I’ve always tried to be brutally honest on but for a few years now, because of other people, I’ve lost my way a little - but I’m going to be braver, because I need to, other people need me to. Earlier this month we received Wilby’s diagnosis. The psychiatrist began the meeting with “I don’t think this will come as a surprise to you….” It did. Weirdly. Even though I knew it was coming…I wanted it. I needed it because I’ve never, ever had a child like Wilby. I’ve never had a toddler who I’ve been told by a health visitor he is ‘red flagging in all areas’ and when I pointed out his strengths I was met with “That’s not what we’re looking at”. I’ve never had a toddler that I can’t take to a supermarket or shop, who I can’t bribe with a bag of haribo or an iPad to behave in public. I’ve never had any of our children attack Josh & I to the point we genuinely get hurt most days. We get bruised, scratched, bitten, I have chunks of hair missing & he draws blood because he’s so quick and strong, and if we put him down he hurts himself so badly by smashing his head off any surface and clawing his skin until he bleeds. I’ve never felt like my heart is breaking because I genuinely don’t know how to console him or make things better…. …but I’ve also never had a toddler who has taught me how beautiful life is, how you can get such pleasure from something as simple as a palm tree. I’ve never known a toddler catch a ball from a distance without any eye contact, stack blocks and cushions with such precision they won’t tumble over or line sweets in a perfect straight line I couldn’t do better using a ruler to help me…. So as you can see, we have a beautiful baby boy who is autistic, and as his assessment team have stated ‘Wilby will be impacted by this condition and it affects how he will see and respond to the world’… ..but what a world Wilby lives in 🌴♥️

  3. Today felt like a really heavy day on the ward. It’s quite difficult to explain if you’ve never been on one of these NICU / HDU / SCBU wards but the bond you form with the other families and babies in the hospital is like nothing I’ve ever experienced before. We’ve lost track of the number of babies that have come and gone during our time here but from the moment they get admitted into the room we just feel a special bond with them all. Some will be in the room for less than 24hrs and we don’t even get a chance to speak to mum and dad. For others, it’s days or weeks and we’re able to get to know them a bit more. At 9 weeks old (37 weeks today!), Raya is now one of the veterans on the ward and @thediaryofamum and I almost feel it’s our duty to reassure the new families that their baby is in the best place possible as they start out on their journey. I’m not quite sure what has happened but in the last 24hrs there have been a sudden influx of babies into the unit meaning the capacity has almost doubled. Space has been very limited. There’s been lots of new faces, lots more doctors and consultants and lots of grandparents coming to meet their new grandchildren and of course lots of beeping (I sometimes come home with the noise of the machines and monitors ringing in my ears). In amongst all of the madness, in the past couple of days we’ve seen babies hooked up to machines we’ve never seen before and even had babies that have had to be moved on to other hospitals (sometimes in an emergency) where they will receive specialist care. I can’t quite describe how all of this makes you feel but it’s a lot and my heart goes out to anyone who finds themselves in this situation right now. I know it’s tough and scary but our babies truly are in the best place they can be. And on that note, I have to just say how INCREDIBLE the medical staff are that work in these units. We are witnessing first hand in my opinion the very best of the NHS every single day. We love and appreciate you for all of the hard work you do to keep our babies alive and thriving and eventually heading out the door back to where they belong at home ❤️
