Here's a list of the farmers and producers who are now left with unpaid invoices and lots of incredible fresh produce and pantry ingredients to be enjoyed in the next week and weeks. These farmers and producers will be affected NOT just this Christmas but for MANY WEEKS to come. Seeing how this unfold has triggered the pain from my family's farm liquidation. We were dropped by our only customer abruptly. We lost our means to make ends meet, our home, and my parents' dignities for many years.   2. We have shared our despair for @dwalliams' ‘The World’s Worst Children’ for months. Has the issue been covered by mainstream media? No. Dare we ask, why? Brian Wong, the protagonist, was drawn with slanted eyes - how an east Asian person has been caricatured in the west. He has been characterised as a SWOT, with glasses “enlarging his eyes to the size of cymbals”. His predilection for math has been narrated as a misguided ‘intelligence’ - a fool who tried to count to infinity. In his old age, he is depicted as an angry, crazy, half-wit man, and illustrated to look like #DrFuManchu and #MrYunioshi. For the adults who have collected the memories of racial bullying, discrimination, and harassment from our childhood into adulthood, memories that we have tried hard to forget, this book is triggering our accumulated traumas. People have also voiced their hurt for Williams’ portrayal of an Indian man he named Raj in ‘Bad Dad’, as a cunning shop keeper who sells food past the sell-by date. An author was said to have lambasted the people who criticised the portrayal as “politically correct do-gooders” and that “no Indian shopkeeper will be offended by Raj” This is not just about an author who is insensitive to racism. There is a system of publishing, marketing, sales, and consumers that made the decisions to support this approach to storytelling. This is a system that refuses to listen to the communities it injures. A system which ignores, laugh at and counterattack minority voices (see my new post)!. It’s painful for us to share our experiences publicly. For many of us, we don’t feel equipped to express these traumatic experiences. We are just individuals working hard to live our lives as contributing members of society.  For some of us, who have been internalising racism all our lives, we are now awaking to the harms of living the model minority stereotype. Being compliant and productive, yet invisible has not made the system fair or safe for us or for other #BIPOC. For others, they have never been the model minority. The rise of the #asianhatecrimes during the Covid-19 pandemic is a manifestation of the systemic racism in our society. (continues in comment)

What would you do about it? @soilassociation, a member of the Consortium for Labelling for the Environment, Animal Welfare and Regenerative Farming (CLEAR), has written an open letter to @Keirstarmer calling for urgent support for UK growers alongside targeted actions that will help the nations to: 🥬 Reverse the decline of domestic fruit and veg sector ⛔ <2% of the UK’s farmland is used to grow fruit & vegetables. Increasing unpredictable weather, low profit margins, limited labour are among the many challenges growers have to endure. According to @Riverford’s #GetFairAboutFarming campaign, almost half growers fear they could go out of biz within a year. 🫛 Reduce our reliance on imports ⛔ >80% of the fruit and <50% the vegetables we eat are imported 🌾 Make farming part of the solution to tackle climate & biodiversity crises 🥦 Boost NHS ⛔ An est. £6.5 billion is spent each year by the NHS on dietary-related illnesses Many opportunities were missed by the previous Gov. As the new Gov pledges to ‘course correction’ to prevent the nation from breaching legally binding emissions targets, we urge the Gov to seize the opportunities to transition away from pesticide-dominated and petrochemical-dependent intensive food production to more sustainable, nature-friendly, human health-centric method of food production.
