  1. Tonight BBC2’s documentary series A Life in Ten Pictures is on Alexander McQueen. The episode focuses on ten defining photographs, ranging from iconic shots to private snaps, including this image of myself and Lee from the early 1990s. Looking back, that decade feels like the last time people weren't continually documenting their personal lives through photography. Even if you took photos, you had to go to Boots or Joe's Basement (remember them?) to have them developed and printed. As a result, there was often a substantial gap between the moment captured, and the time when you would later relive that moment through a photograph. If you were out at night, it was more likely that it was a club photographer documenting the night either for themselves or in the hopes of having their images published in Dazed, The Face, or i-D. In the case of this image, it was taken, I think, in 1993 at the opening Sign of the Times shop in Covent Garden. And I’m pretty sure the photographer was Jeremy Deller. But I only saw it for the first time in 2016, some 23 years later, when owner Fiona Cartledge published a book about the shop.    By then, the image had become not a picture of a fleeting moment captured in the relative  present, but had transformed into a historical record of a time long gone. The documentary is incredibly well researched with some exceptional footage from the time of Central St Martins, Soho, and Paris, much of which I’ve never seen before. What emerges through the multiple images that become the focus of the documentary is not only a reflection on love and loss, but also the sheer audacity and passion of youth. A Life in Ten Pictures is on BBC2 at 9pm on 11th April 2024.

  2. A short interview with @thefacemagazine Inside the Westminster @Menswear_Archive, the new book from @prof.andrewgroves and Dr Danielle Sprecher invites you into the university’s enviable archive of men’s clothing. Unpicking over 140 designs in the collection, from Stone Island jackets to Prada jeans, the tome pays homage to the world of menswear. We caught up with Andrew to hear more. 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗱𝗶𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗪𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗺𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗠𝗲𝗻𝘀𝘄𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗔𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝟮𝟬𝟭𝟲? It was created as a teaching collection; I was frustrated that students were only able to access garments through an iPhone screen. It meant they had little understanding of fabric, cut, and construction. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝗱𝗲𝘀 𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝘀𝘂𝗰𝗵 𝗮𝘀 𝗕𝘂𝗿𝗯𝗲𝗿𝗿𝘆, 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗥𝗼𝘀𝗲, 𝗣𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗮 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗝𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗣𝗮𝘂𝗹 𝗚𝗮𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗶𝗲𝗿. 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗶𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝘄𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗵 𝗴𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝗱𝗲? The archive doesn’t set out to collect ‘the best’ menswear. Instead, we collect garments that in some way can help designers when they’re creating their own, new work. So every piece has to have an exciting use of construction, cut, or functionality. 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀? We collect objects that I believe no one else does, such as Lidl trainers or the Greggs x Primark collaboration, and they share the same space and status as Prada and Louis Vuitton garments. The ability to see each in the context of the other will enable future historians to understand the role fashion played across the whole of society. 𝗔𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗽𝗶𝗲𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘄𝗰𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗸, 𝘄𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗳𝗮𝘃𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲𝘀? The Craig Green hand-painted jacket, the scooterist’s MA-1 jacket and the Stone Island Zeltbahn shelter cape.
