  3. As many of you know, Avery has been battling terminal pancreatic cancer for the past 7 years. If you’ve followed his journey, this last year has been the hardest our family has ever endured. After a recent cycle of chemotherapy, Avery began bleeding—so severely that he choked on his own blood while sleeping. When we arrived at Seattle Children’s Hospital, he was lethargic and dizzy. His labs showed severe anemia and critically low platelets, a combination that makes even minor bleeding life-threatening. He required multiple transfusions of blood and platelets to stop the bleeding and support his body through yet another complication of cancer treatment. This is all during the same week when Avery had been planned to vend at his first show in Portland with @beard.dad.cardz aka Uncle Phill. During his second transfusion, Avery woke from sleep and asked to open some Pokémon packs. He had brought three packs of Evolving Skies, gifted by fellow Pokémon creator @owezardpokemon—and we are beyond grateful, not just for the packs, but for the tearful moment that followed. What happened while opening the second pack is something we will carry with us forever. In the middle of fear, exhaustion, and a long hospital stay—there was joy. There was wonder. There was a reminder that Avery is still just a kid who loves Pokémon, even while fighting a battle no child should ever have to face. Please watch until the end.   1. When we became licensed foster parents in 2020, we didn’t know what to expect. We just knew that there was a huge need with 400,000 kids in the US alone without a permanent home and we wanted to help. When we received the calls for Kenna and Addison, we never knew they would permanently become a part of our family, but we are so grateful they did. We are so proud of our two girls and how far they’ve come over the last four years. We are blown away by the things they do every day. The way they put on a show for us with their dances, the faces they make and their sense of humor. They also challenge us as parents, but they help make us better parents. And they’ve inspired us to help grow Bananas Foster and help foster kids all over the world. Like we always say with our teams, it’s all about focusing on one fan at a time. We are reminded of this every morning when our two girls wake up and every night when we put them to bed. We can all make a difference, one child at a time.

  3. There would be no Savannah Bananas and no Banana Ball, if it wasn’t for the Gastonia Grizzlies. I had just torn my shoulder and my baseball career was over. I didn’t know what I was going to do. But then I got offered the job as GM of the Gastonia Grizzlies. I was 23 years old, and the team only had 200 fans coming to their games and had lost over $100,000 the previous year. The only reason I got offered the job is because no one with experience and a track record wanted it. But I said, Yes! I was up for the challenge. It was harder than I could ever imagine to convince fans to come to our games. But it’s here where I learned how to make baseball fun and put the fans first. @emcole3 and @jaredaorton joined me and we grew so much together. We tried everything in Gastonia from Flatulence Fun Nights, to Pregnant Nights, to Midnight Madness games. This is where our players first danced and where we started to go all in on the fan experience. It was 8 years of learning and experimenting in Gastonia before Emily, Jared and I started our new team in Savannah. Our time in Gastonia gave us the courage to think bigger and start a team from scratch…and the rest is history.
