  2. Setting up my new shooting plane from @breseplane and taking it for a spin on some canarywood. Over the years, I’ve really gotten into the habit of shooting in all my woodworking. If there’s a task that I can do at a shooting board, I’ll do it. My shooting board was a godsend when I didn’t have a real shop and did a lot of my woodworking inside at the coffee table. Those who have followed me for a while know I’m a broken record on how great they are. For a very long time, I used the @veritas_tools shooting board and shooting plane, and they’ve both been quite good for me. I had to modify the shooting board to work with my new plane, and in the process I realized that while I once quite liked it, I’ve grown to think it’s over-engineered for my work. My reasons for this are twofold. First, while the track that the plane rides in is nice, it’s not at all necessary and makes it so the shooting board can’t be used with most bench planes (at least if you have it set up for the shooting plane). You also run the risk of having the aluminum dig into your plane (don’t ask me how I know!), which is just an unnecessary risk. Second, while the variable angle fence is nicely made and offers versatility, I have not once in the very many years of owning it set it to any angles other than 90 and 45. And like I said, I use my shooting board for everything I can. This wouldn’t be a problem if the variable angle option didn’t make me feel the need to constantly check for 90 — a fixed fence that could not move would calm my worries. For 45s I’d throw a triangle on there. So I ditched the track. I’m going to keep the fence because like I said it is well made and heck I already paid for it. I can always just drill it down to the board to keep it from moving if I want. But if I could go back in time, I’d just pass on the shooting board and make my own. There are plans for a few in my book but they’re dead simple to make and there are plenty of great free plans out there online. Just my two cents. #woodworking #reels #woodworkingtips
