  3. I’m not sure if people talk enough about this. Probably because navigating it is so painful. Dealing with cancer is difficult at any time of year, but it takes on a new meaning at Christmas. Last Christmas my Mum was being treated for breast cancer and this Christmas, my Dad has terminal cancer. One finished treatment & the other was diagnosed a few months later. It doesn’t feel real as I type and it certainly doesn’t feel fair, but the cruelty of cancer never discriminates. I’ve been a charity ambassador for @cancerfocusni for years & have always taken it very seriously, but to be honest, I didn’t fully understand what it really feels like as a family to go through this, until it knocked on our front door. The reality is agonising. Watching this evil disease slowly take away the person you love most in the world bit by bit and in our case, at such speed. That mix of devastation, helplessness, anger and inner strength you have to dig deep to find, fluctuate every single day. Living in a state of shock has become the norm for us & I’m not sure that will ever go away. We talk about the golden months with Dad; the summer into early Sept. His treatment was having a positive impact and he had a quality of life again. This picture was taken on my birthday; one of my favourite days with him ❤️ And one of the last truly great days we had. Now as my incredible Dad battles hard, there are still glimpses of his wonderful sense of humour, his devotion to us and his stubborn strength, that make me weep with joy when they appear. I would give ANYTHING to change what is happening. I guess I’m sharing my thoughts to send solidarity to anyone else who is going through this too. Our insta feeds will be flooded with feel good over Christmas and generally, it’s not popular to share the painful parts, but if it helps one person feel less alone, then that has to be a good thing 🙏🏼

All good things must come to an end, and so this will be my last season with @officialulsterrugby I have so much to be thankful for and will treasure the many amazing memories created at this club. As a young kid it was my dream to be a professional rugby player and to represent my home province. That dream became a reality not once but over 200 times. I have so many emotions looking back over the last 13 years, my whole adult life has been at Ulster and it’s hard to put it into words. I feel an immense sense of pride, I feel sad that it’s coming to an end, but so incredibly happy that it happened. The journey is hopefully not over just yet as I hope to finish this current season strong and thereafter look to play my rugby abroad and experience another club and culture. For my 13 seasons at Ulster Rugby, so many people to thank from staff to the players for their help, advice and expertise and the friendships forged. To the fans, you have been amazing, thank you! Thank you especially to my parents and my siblings who supported me through everything from a young age and to my friends who enjoyed the journey with me. The euphoria of scoring a try at The Kingspan Stadium and the walk back to my wing hearing the crowd is something I will miss and be hard to replicate! To my partner Melissa thank you for your unwavering support and for giving me the best gift in life and my proudest achievement in our daughter Madison, without you I could not continue this path in professional sport. For Madison to watch me play live and holding her on the pitch is something that i will cherish forever, and although she won’t remember it I look forward to telling her in the future. I got to travel the world, play with and against many of my heroes and live out my dream at the club I call home ..for that I will be forever grateful. ❤️
