  1. EXCITING NEWS!‼️‼️ Today our study looking at the impact of metformin on CCCA was published by JAMA Dermatology. In this reel, I take 90 seconds to describe what has been a lifetime of work!✨✨ . . First some background. We had previously published a case series suggesting that metformin cream may be effective in patients with CCCA however, we had very little understanding of how it could work. ✨✨ . . Metformin has been shown to reverse scarring in a variety of organ tissues, but has not been extensively studied in alopecia. In this study, we used a form of molecular analysis called ‘bulk RNA sequencing’ to sample the scalps of patients pre-and post use of metformin. Surprisingly, we found a near complete reversal of the molecular signature in patient Ls with CCCA after a few short weeks of oral metformin and hair regrowth in several patients who had been using it at least 6 months ‼️ . . We are super excited about these results because CCCA is considered very difficult to treat while metformin is generally regarded as a very safe medication. It has been shown to help women get pregnant, has antiviral activity, and some data suggests it may protect against cancer as well. There are so many good reasons to incorporate this medication as part of the treatment plan. . . Click the link in the bio to read my blog post on this study.   2. New publication alert! 🚨🚨🚨 . . Did you know that autoimmune disease can manifest as a change in curl pattern, which is particularly noticeable in patients with tightly curled hair ⁉️This is a finding that is rarely discussed amongst dermatologists but is in incredibly important clue to diagnosing active auto immune disease. As an alopecia specialist I see this not infrequently, but I find that because a looser curl pattern can be generally preferred by patients, it is often not brought to my attention unless I specifically ask about this finding. In fact, I use restoration of texture and curl pattern as a sign that treatment is working! So please be on the lookout for a change in curl pattern as a sign of systemic disease in all of our patients. I would also like to shout out Dr. Frances Ajose, a Nigerian dermatologist who first published on this phenomenon several years ago. My hope is that with continued awareness we can help more patients. Derms, have you all noticed this finding in your patients?
