I was lucky enough to get hold of the latest Springbank sherry cask bottling from @nickollsperks and couldn't wait to crack it open and enjoy a dram in their cellar. Is it as good as the PX and the Palo Cortado that came before it? I'm not sure yet. It feels like this one needs a bit of time to open up, so I'll be revisiting this one in a month or so to see how it is! . . #Springbank #Amontillado

  2. Eureka! To celebrate 25 years of the Ardbeg Commitee, Ardbeg have released the Eureka! This bottling was created to 'capture the many taste preferences of the Committee’s thousands of members in a single dram'. During the 2023 Feis, Committee members gathered together at a top secret location on Ardbeg Day. 'Operation Smokescreen' as it was called, saw these 100 people, chosen from 15 different countries, try 5 different samples and share their thoughts, and flavour preferences. The resulting whisky, created by Dr Bill Lumsden and Gillian Macdonald, is a combination of Pedro Ximenez sherry casks and bourbon matured whisky made from roasted malt. People like peat and sherry. Who knew? Nose: Rock pools, pork crackling with apple sauce, chalky sweets, mixed nuts, olive wood with a herbal peat smoke. The official notes mentioned tarred roads, and that'd spot on! Palate: An initial rush of savoury flavours, leading into a sweet finish. Plum chutney, bitter dark chocolate, sea salt, dates, and caramel latte. The peat comes across on the finish as a medicinal aniseed mouthwash like flavour. This is unmistakably Ardbeg. It really reminds me of a more complex version of the Uigeadail, with a richer flavour. For me, this is the best committee release in a long while.   3. I'm back with another post about @lochlomondmalts , and this time, I'd like to talk about golf. Since becoming the official spirit of The Open Golf Championship, Loch Lomond has produced an array of bottles from their The Open Collection. Each year, they release an accessible, reasonably priced non-age statement, as well as a more premium single malt and occasionally the odd single cask. In recent years, the younger release has been matured in some interesting (mainly wine) cask types, including a Rioja finish in 2023 (pictured above), Claret wine casks in 2022, and Chardonnay wine casks for last years bottling. Two of my favourite Loch Lomond whiskies have come from this range. The first was a single cask they released in partnership with @ColinMontgomerie to celebrate the 2018 Carnoustie Open. The second is a 19 year old Claret wood finish made alongside golfer Darren Clarke, which produced one of the pinkest whiskies I've seen! This year's releases are about to hit shelves. I've seen them online, but I'm not sure if they're still under embargoe, so I won't ruin them here! After being aged in sherry casks for six decades, just 40 bottles of The Macallan 1926 were bottled in 1986, representing the oldest @the_macallan vintage ever produced.   2. TALISKER - 18 years old Made by the sea . 🔹Single malt Scotch whisky 🔹Matured in ex-Bourbon barrels 🔹Finished in ex-Sherry casks 🔹Coloured 🔹Chill-filtered 🔹45.8% ABV . Like the other bottlings of this Isle of Skye distillery, the 18 year old is distilled from lightly peated barley. 18-20ppm is said to be in the grain. About 5-7ppm ends in the new make after the mash and the distilling process. It's significantly less than many Islay whiskies. . 🔸Nose: intense and ripe, toffee, honeydew melon, peach, sultanas, Christmas biscuits with candied orange peel and some marzipan, followed by a nicely integrated woody smoke, sea salt and some oak 🔸Palate: maritime, sweet and oaky notes, fruits such as peach, sultanas and oranges, accompanied by a spicy wood smoke with a subtle saltiness 🔸Finish: medium-long, there is the typical "chilli catch" remaining subtly until the end - wonderful . For my taste, the 18yo is a brilliant Talisker that should definitely be tried. It's currently my favourite bottling from this distillery. A few days ago I had the pleasure of attending a unique and magnificent 10th Anniversary Tasting by @sansibarwhisky . A very big thank you also to @whiskygermany for organising. This brilliant Clynelish was the starter of the evening. . 🔸Nose: very fruity, tropical fruits, honey, sage, peach, slightly leathery, herbal, a bit waxy in the background 🔸Palate: full-bodied, tropical fruit basket, honey, nectarines, heather, mango, herbaceous, a bit waxy after a while, slight ginger spiciness 🔸Finish: long, nice interplay between fruitiness and spicy oak, whereby the woodiness is not too dominant . A really great bottling. Exceptionally good, the typical waxiness of Clynelish is recognisable, but does not push itself to the fore. Neither does the oak - even after 24 years. This Glen Garioch was aged twice in European virgin oak barrique casks – first for 11 years, then for an additional 7 years. It was bottled at a robust 55.2% ABV. Offered as a hand-filled edition, the remaining cask content was bottled to make room for a new handilled batch. . As a big fan of virgin oak and an admirer of Glen Garioch, despite the distillery being better known for its wine cask maturations, I am especially excited to try this malt soon. . What about you? Would you have taken this bottle home too? . . 🇩🇪 (unbezahlte Werbung) Als wir im Regal bei @Glengariochmalt noch drei Flaschen dieser Abfüllung entdeckten, war klar, dass eine davon mit nach Hause musste. Dieser Glen Garioch reifte doppelt in europäischen Virgin Oak Barrique-Fässern – zunächst 11 Jahre, dann weitere 7 Jahre. Abgefüllt wurde er mit kräftigen 55,2% ABV. Diese Abfüllung wurde als Handfilled angeboten, und der restliche Inhalt des Fasses wurde abgefüllt, um Platz für eine neue Charge zu schaffen. . Ich bin ein großer Fan von Virgin Oak und schätze Glen Garioch, obwohl die Destillerie eher für ihre Weinreifungen bekannt ist. Umso mehr freue ich mich darauf, diesen Malt bald zu probieren.
