  1. Last night at 9:30 PM, on the summit of Bondcliff, I climbed my 191st White Mountain 4,000-footer and am now only one summit away from completing the first known Quadruple Single Season. From here, the project takes an unconventional turn. On Tuesday, March 18, I’ll traverse the Presidential Range from Mount Madison to Mount Jackson. Although these eight peaks won’t count toward the Quadruple, they will count toward my goal of reaching 200 summits before the season is out. These will be summits 192-199. On Wednesday, March 19, the last full day of winter, I’ll climb Mount Garfield, simultaneously completing the Quadruple Single Season and reaching my 200th 4,000-footer this winter. For the last six and a half years, l’ve stood on the shoulders of this community and the pioneers who built these iconic hiking lists from the ground up. I’d be honored to have anyone who’s interested join me on this hike. Start time is 7:00AM from the Mount Garfield Trail winter parking lot on Route 3. The pace will be easy, and I expect to be on the mountain for 5-6 hours with some time at the top. If you don’t want to hike but still want to come out, l’ll be back at the trailhead by early afternoon and plan to hang there for a while. The goal is a super laid-back and informal vibe where we can all celebrate our collective wins this season. Hike the Whites. Be the wolf.   2. In the winter of 1994/95, three scrappy White Mountain hikers—Cath Goodwin, Cindy DiSanto, and Steve Martin—became the first known people to climb all 48 4,000-footers in a single winter season. Ten years later, in the winter of 2004/2005, Cath attempted and completed the first known “Double Single Season.” In the winter of 2010/11, Tim Muskat established the first Triple Single Season and then went on to climb an additional 24 peaks before the winter was out. The idea of a Quadruple Single Season has haunted me for years, ever since Ed Hawkins (Hiker Ed) shared the story of Tim’s three and a half rounds. Having done a Single, Double, and Triple in three separate seasons myself, I knew the Quadruple would require an even higher level of commitment and the willingness to hike in a lot of wild weather and conditions. But I could never shake the idea of trying, and when I returned home from the Arizona Trail last fall, I knew I was feeling bold enough to swing for it. So I swung, and somehow… managed to pull it off. A day removed from finishing, there are three important things I want to get out. 1. I stand on the shoulders of the pioneers who created and first pursued these lists that drive so much of our hiking culture in the White Mountains: Steve Smith, Ed Hawkins, Cath Goodwin, Sue Johnson, Tim Muskat, and that entire dynasty of hikers. 2. This couldn’t have been done without the ridiculous support of the White Mountains community. To everyone who hiked with me, donated food, donated money, sent messages, attended a talk, fist-bumped me on the trail, or gave me a ride: from the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU. 3. Lastly, I’d like to dedicate this effort in its entirety to the memory of Chris Roma, a triple-crown hiker who lost his life in the Pemi last winter pursuing his own long-distance hiking project. I didn’t know Chris personally, but I thought of him often this winter, and can’t help but feel like he and my father played a large role in keeping me safe out there. At least that’s what I would tell myself each night as I turned on my headlamp and walked further into the deep, black, beautiful abyss. 📸: @chris_trembley

  3. The Long Trail is long. Confirmed. Interminable, green tunnel, sore feet, hobble bush besties, side hill the long trail, beautifully rugged, bopping and total exhaustion are some hot takes. My goal was to travel the length of Vermont, share the trail with friends, enjoy solo trail time, visit with family and friends. That is exactly what I got. I was able to draw from their energy and love as it started on a high and ended in a very exhausted place. I cannot thank everyone enough who dropped me water, danced in parking lots, fed me delicious meals, told stories, laughed, wiped away tears and shared the trail. I feel like I could write a novel but going to keep it short. It was so exciting to start and such a relief to finish. From Whiteface Mtn to Lincoln gap the terrain is rugged and beautiful. The more challenging terrain ended up being the most mentally stimulating. The green tunnel towards the end was winding and rolling. It was funny that I had to psych myself up for 500 ft climbed when at the beginning that was easy. I talked to hobble bushes and ferns - they were my friends. My cardiovascular system got real tired and my left foot extensor group started to revolt the last few days but otherwise got away pretty unscathed (as far as I can tell). The last couple of days I was a little nervous as I had pushed my body to a place that I never had and wasn’t sure if it would keep going. As hard as it was in the end, it was so meaningful and I’m really proud of myself. Now to do some rehab, rest and keep soaking it in. Thank you again to everyone who jumped in and helped me out on this ode to where I come from.   2. He did it!! 🐕‍🦺 100 peaks! 48/48 ✔️⛰️ 52/52 ✔️⛰️ Today my pup Myles completed both lists on Mt Cabot and the Horn. 18 months ago began the quest of checking off the NH48 & 52WAV for Myles. It was a way for us to get out in nature together and do what we both love most. From the beginning, Myles has always loved being outside. I started him on local flat trails before he was a year old and with the blessing of his vet, moved up to short hikes with elevation just shy of his 1st Birthday. He was a natural, especially at scrambling! Over the past year and a half, we have been weekend warriors, driving over 3-6 hours round trip to hike. If you have ever owned a Boxer, you know how much exercise they need. And when you think they’ve had enough, they want more! When Myles sees the backpacks come out, he immediately waits at the door, ready for a day of adventure. Through every summit of the NH48, the 52WAV, some overnight backpacking trips, embracing all of the elements (snow, wind, rain), he did it! Does Myles realize it was more than just a fun day filled with adventure? Probably not! But I’m so proud of him! 🤩 Myles is truly my best hiking partner and I’m so grateful to have him in my life. A dog’s life is short, which is why every day I devote to making it the best life possible for him! ❤️🐕‍🦺 Thank you to everyone that said hello to us on trail but a special thanks goes to our trail family. Myles thanks you for every hug, back scratch, treat, and more importantly your love and support.
