  1. Two years ago today, I finished hiking all 11 national scenic trails. The first woman and 6th person to accomplish that goal. While I had hiked most of the trails just because I wanted to experience them, the last four (Potomac, North Country, Ice Age, Natchez Trace) were hiked with the goal of finishing the list. I struggled with the sections that weren’t as scenic, that had a lot of road walking and overgrown trail. It’s a different way of hiking. They taught me to dig deeper, to use my will power, to look for the things that are worthwhile. The rare sighting of a tiger salamander in North Dakota, the giant trillium flowers in Wisconsin, the history along the Potomac and Natchez Trace. But most of all the kindness of the people along the trail and those who supported me online and in person. I am mostly drawn to the wild places and remote trails but those more urban trails showed me a different beauty. I count myself fortunate to still be in touch with so many of the good people I’ve met along the way. In the past two years I’ve been rehiking some trails, discovering some new ones. I feel at home on a hiking trail. Life off trail is challenging. Next year’s plan is to hike the Pacific Crest Trail again. Probably in a bit of a patchy way to allow some work time in spring. .
