  1. And, it's done! Ok fine... not really. But 3D renderings are about as close as you can come to seeing the real thing before it's built. A little while back, @envisionhomedesigns reached out to offer to do a few complimentary 3D renderings of my project. I wasn't prepared for how exciting it would be to see these. Obviously the real landscape is a little different, and house color and trim decisions are still TBD. But it's amazing to see the house like this. No regrets about enlarging that deck. . Some designers and architects might include 3D renderings along with plans, but for most projects this would be an extra service. Owner-builders with a little extra time or budgetary constraints can make digital models with free tools like SketchUp or Blender. Of course, it's easier to hire a company that can take plans and create renderings for you. 3D renderings can include interior and exterior spaces, allow you to add furniture or play with lighting, and even let you explore the house in VR. . Envision Home Designs told me that simple exterior renderings like these would typically run about $500. While that's not nothing, it's worth keeping in mind that owner-builders often make many changes to a project during the design and construction phases, and changes become increasingly expensive the later they happen. If you make a single change to your home design as a result of doing a 3D rendering, it's probably worth it. .   2. It's been a pretty interesting last few weeks. A Facebook post I made months ago about my framing problems suddenly went viral and was shared over 24,000 times. I received hundreds of messages from around the world and picked up a little over 8,000 new followers on Instagram overnight. Most of the feedback has been from industry professionals and it has been sympathetic, funny, kind, and very insightful. I'm seriously overwhelmed by it all and I promise I will respond to every message. . I've had a lot of questions about where the project is at now and I wanted to provide a quick update. First, all of the defective framing created by original GC was demolished and I began reframing with a new contractor. See my previous posts for details. The reframing is going really well, and the quality of work is drastically better this time around. The cuts are tight, fasteners are correct, and the plans are being followed to the letter. As of today, we just need to finish some roof details, build a couple interior walls, cut out the windows, and take care of a few other odds and ends. Should be done in two or three weeks. . I'm glad my initial framing disaster has been so instructive. To all the new folks following along: welcome! I'll keep posting about that situation to the extent that I think it's helpful, but I hope this account becomes about much more than memorializing a disaster.   1. Today begins the second weekend of the @officialalaskastatefair! This weather is perfect for a day of fair fun. One of my favorite parts of the fair is obviously all the great food vendors! Some vendors only come around once a year; while others can be found all throughout food truck season. There’s something for everyone when it comes to fair food. Only 2 more weekends left to go see what the fair has to offer. This year there is a new acrobatics & equestrian show, @cirquemaceo, on the yellow trail. I have found this year that a lot of vendors are taking cards that used to be cash only, but still make sure to bring some cash just in case. Here is my food round up from this past weekend! 1) watermelon stuffed with pineapple/vanilla swirl dole whip from Aloha Whip. 2) poffertjes from @omas.poffertjes 3) seafood chowder & fry bread from @fishoncampgrill 4) fried peaches & cream from your favorite peach booth. 5) chocolate milkshake from @alaskansodajerk 6) classic cheeseburger from @huskyburger.ak 7) coconut crab cakes from @akcrabshack 8) raspberry rhubarb cobbler from @bushesbunches 9) rhubarb lemonade from @bushesbunches 10) cannoli from Alaska Kannoli by @mainevent907 I wanted to try so much more, but alas I am only one person. New poke spot dropped this past March—sorry I’ve been keeping this one to myself y’all! @sakanasoiree is located in the Metro Mall & brings us a beautiful space with lots of room for remote work. We don’t have a dedicated poke bowl spot quite like this one in town so it’s definitely a very welcomed addition! I visited early April when they were still in the soft opening phase & poke bowls were build your own. While the DIY bowls are still an option they’ve also added their own creations of signature bowls to the menu! I built a bowl I built a bowl with a white rice base, AK sockeye salmon, pickled jalapeño, pickled slaw, pineapple, avocado, crispy onion & a mango, pineapple, jalapeño sauce. The salmon and tuna they use in their bowls are wild caught, and most of the sauces are made in house. For my drink I ordered the special, which was a mango, passionfruit matcha. This is the perfect spot for a healthy grab and go lunch, or a convenient location to work remotely or host a meeting (they have a private room available). The space open and inviting, and the food is creative, fresh and delicious.   3. Excited to share the grand opening of downtown Anchorage’s hottest new restaurant, @crimsonanchorage! Located inside of the @wildbirchhotel, a newly remodeled boutique hotel. The hotel & restaurant are decorated in what I would describe as rustic chic. Lots of warm inviting touches like the fireplaces, beautiful pops of color from the hand woven chairs & artwork commissioned by local artists, and many bronze industrial fixtures while maintaining that touch of casual cool that’s so notorious to Alaska. They have TWO outdoor seating options, which we know when the sun is out there is nothing better than a rooftop deck or patio & Crimson offers both. Crimson is adding another well rounded cocktail program to Anchorage. From vibrant & fruity to spirit forward there’s something for everyone! Featured cocktails in this reel include the signature Crimson Fire (fireweed infused vodka from @alaskanspirits), the Laguna Azul (@portchilkootdistillery rum), Hot Chena Smolder & the Never Have I Ever (a tequila based espresso martini). Bites I sampled were the Crimson nachos, Bison steak salad, and seared Alaskan scallops. The nachos were definitely my favorite item that I sampled. They were loaded up & full of flavor. The scallops had a lovely sear on them, and all the proteins were very nicely seasoned. For dessert I ordered the churros & the creme brûlée cheesecake. The espresso martini complimented these desserts perfectly. While I enjoyed both the churros were the star of the show. They were warm, crispy & sugary. The dulche de leche sauce was absolutely drinkable with how tasty it was! Go follow their page to be in the know for their weekly special offers like the Sunday brunch buffet, food & beverage specials like wild wine Wednesday or bourbon & board. Go grab a cocktail & some bites on the deck while summer is still with us! Excited to have this fun new spot in town!
