  2. I promise I haven’t just been crocheting Valentine’s bonnets! I’m actively working on the pattern for the Lucky Duck hat but I’m such a perfectionist that I have to test every size myself before sending it off into the world (even for testing). Luckily Frankie has gone through 3 sizes so far so at least I have a fit model for each one (ugh what is wrong with me?). Anouka was my first #intarsia knitted piece ever and it was quite the ride! I admit I was overwhelmed when I first looked at all the color work charts. I also had no idea how to neatly divide out the yarns for each chart, but after a few reads through the written pattern, everything started to click. And after I found the perfect, ever-so-convenient no-tangle thread bobbins to organize all my separate yarns into (swipe to see them!), it was smooth sailing from there! I had these colorways in Loft sitting in my stash since the COVID quarantine, so I was happy to use this #testknit as a stash-busting project. I began with a center panel that featured the light yellow and gray color ways, but after knitting a few inches of the color work, I realized this was all wrong, and decided to make the hayloft yellow and red color ways the centerpiece.   2. My latest #workinprogress — #stagheadpullover no. 2 🦌💐 I am so excited to finally share my current WIP with you all! I previously made my first Stag Head Pullover back in 2019 but found that I never wore it because I made it with white yarn and was afraid of getting it dirty, and I made it a bit long for my taste. I ended up giving it to my aunt who lives in Seoul, Korea a couple of years ago because I genuinely wanted it to be worn and loved (Swipe ➡️ to see photos of Stag Head no. 1). However, whenever I thought back to this sweater, I missed it so much and felt sad that I gave it away—it’s such a special design! So I decided it was finally time to make my second Stag Head. This time around, I made some major changes after my first experience. I decided to omit the waist shaping and make it a little shorter so that it wouldn’t be as warm and feel so bulky when worn with all of my pants. I knew I would lose momentum if I knit the front and back pieces separately, so I modified the pattern to be knit in the round. I also decided to use @brooklyntweed ‘s Shelter yarn as I know this yarn provides incredible structure to cables. I initially was going to go with a darker foresty green (Yellowstone) I had in my stash, but ultimately pivoted to the golden Hayloft so as to accentuate the cables more. Now all that’s left to knit are the sleeves! I am so, so happy to revisit @norahgn ‘s extraordinary design. Though it is an immense labor of love, it is absolutely worth all of the effort.   1. ✨ How to Install the Neatest Zipper in Your Knitwear ✨ This method keeps the zipper completely hidden between two facings, and looks flawless on both the right and wrong side. Follow these steps for a sleek finish: Step 1: Pick up and knit stitches along the front edges using two needles. By wrapping the yarn around the back needle before knitting through the picked up stitch, you’ll create a smooth and neat start for both facings. Step 2: Knit the two facings separately back and forth in stockinette stitch. Step 3: Once your facings are done, carefully sandwich the zipper in between them. Use Kitchener stitch to close the facings, making sure to pierce through the zipper lining as you go from one needle to the other. Step 4: do the same for the other front of your garment. Tip 1: I used sewing thread for the kitchener stitch, as my yarn was too thick and fluffy to go through the zipper lining. If you use a smoother yarn, feel free to use your yarn for this step. Tip 2: I marked every centimeter on my zipper and did the math to figure out how many stitches went into one centimeter.   2. ✨ Introducing my finished Jean set, a test knit for the incredibly talented @kolibri.by_johanna ✨ The Jean set features a summery skirt with an A-line shape, high waist, and a fitted top with wide straps. Both pieces are worked in a gorgeous, eye-catching wave-lace pattern. The set is knit in @majogarn ’s Sunny Linen in the colour truffle (a unique blend of Linen, Baby Alpaca, Cotton and Fine Merino Wool). Not only is the yarn a joy to work with, but it becomes even softer after blocking. It feels so luxurious on the skin, and the drape is perfect for the summer vibes I was hoping for! Confession: I’m not usually a fan of knitting all-over lace patterns 🤫 but I absolutely love this one. The lace pattern is incredibly intuitive and easy to remember, making the process so much more enjoyable than I expected. Pro Tip: you can knit the skirt entirely in knit stitch by knitting the garter purl rows inside out using the GSR turn. No purling 😉!!! Johanna has a helpful video for this. I put 15 years of knitting insight in one document… 📃 This was one of my biggest pet peeves when I first started knitting, and through talking with you guys out here on the interwebs, I’ve realized I’m not alone! We 👏 need 👏 context 👏 📃 I created “Why Am I Knitting It That Way? Essential knitting techniques and when to use them” so that even beginner knitters can understand why pattern directions say to use a certain technique. WELP this post has a ton of text but hopefully you all can find this info useful! 💗 It’s not a perfect system, but I think it’s a huge improvement from a single fit that’s actually graded on a women’s size chart only! (Or what some folks do *I believe*, say a design is “unisex” by using a men’s sizing chart instead!) There’s a lot of complexities surrounding this, but this is the method I’ve found best so far to make my designs more inclusive.   1. KLEUR is the name of the new #shawl #knittingpattern that I’m excited to share with you to celebrate the start of 2019. ‘Kleur’ translates to ‘colour’ (from Dutch to English). The Quarter Wheel and Spines sections are #knitted in a striking spectrum of #naturaldyedyarn by @woollenflower (for which you can pop over to her shop for kits). The #natural #undyed black, white and grey are #garthenorronas from @garthenor, used for the Mitre Stripes (black and white) and External Curve (grey). My thanks also go to @muirandco for #knitting this sample for me. To @roseewoodland - our design-brains work in such different ways, it becomes a fascinating collaboration to work with her as a #techeditor. To @jenireid for the lush photos of @mmknitter modelling in her overalls on her allotment - they are what I’d dreamed of. Even @emmaknitsthings was there for styling help. Both @josefinast and @ladyrowena test #knitted, and Kristin also laid the pattern out. I’m so thrilled by how the unusual construction unfolds in this #garterstitch shawl.   3. ROW/ROUND - after yesterday’s frogging, the bottom edge is getting and extra 3cm of #corrugatedribbing and a 2-row/round striped #icordbindoff. So far it seems to not be flipping up at all, which is good news. I’m never sure whether I want to call it a row or round when it comes to #icord, so I tend go with row/round. It’s #knitted as a row, but makes a round. In any case, I’m enjoying the ‘yucky’ combination of auburn and dirty dirty yellow.

  2. I’ve been knitting for a long time and it is very rare when I come across a situation where I need to know a cast on method that isn’t listed here. I think these are the core cast on techniques to keep in your toolkit to be able to make anything! Even if I do come across another method I substitute for one of these listed Understanding the strengths and weaknesses of each method is important. They all have their purpose! Even within one project I never use all one technique My favorites are: TUBULAR CAST ON I always use this when I’m casting on and going directly into ribbing. The look is so polished and beautiful BACKWARDS LOOP The stretchiest in my toolkit, ideal for top down socks, or when you only have one strand and want it to be unobtrusive (underarms, neckline joins) CHAIN EDGE So underrated, works great for a decorative exposed edge and matches a chain selvedge beautifully PROVISIONAL Amazing way to hold stitches for later to use and work on the opposite direction. Literally invisible because it becomes the knit fabric LONG TAIL Great for beginners and has a nice little extra structure without being fussy. Nice to add a little structure JUDYS MAGIC CAST ON I don’t use this a ton, but when I do there is nothing like it.   3. Reading your stitches is such a valuable skill to hone in on! Once you get it, you’ll see knit stitches in everything ✨ You’ll be able to work more quickly and fix any mistakes or issues you come to. This is also step 1 of learning to read knitting charts, which I know intimidates a lot of people!   2. it’s been a incredibly difficult first half of the year for me personally - which in some ways felt like open heart surgery - and I haven’t known how to show up on here or my podcast often times while still treating my personal life with the privacy it deserves. so I guess I just wanted to say, whatever you’re battling with, be it grief, loss, depression, anxiety — please hold on, get yourself the help you need & know that you’re not alone. I once read: “the only way out of it is through it & I will have to be as brave as I’m scared because everything I want it life is on the other side of fear” and this is what I’m choosing to live by 💫 to my friends who’ve been there, holding me: I love you & couldn’t do it without you. you all are in many ways the loves of my life 💗 (Carley Fortune reference iykyk) hair carries memories and holds connections to things that I need to let go of. thanks to my friend Rebecca for helping me through this change signifying the end of one chapter for me & the beginning of the rest of my story.

  1. Today I turn 30 and I could not feel more humble and grateful. Ten years ago, I was moving to London and stepping for the very first time into the fashion industry. My mind is blown away by all the things that have happened since… It takes so many lows to enjoy the highs, so many ‘No’s to cherish the ‘Yes’s - and I don’t know what the future holds, but I cannot wait to keep learning, to face many more challenges, to meet many more talented and wonderful people, to keep growing as a brand and as a person. We might not still be there in two years, but we might as well be there in another 30… I don’t know if I will ever get to officially thank you all for your support, so I want to take this day to say that I could not do it without you team, family, friends and mentors. Thanks to all the brains who advise, teach, and lead me, thanks to all the hands who knit, pin, cut, drape, trace, and sew next to me, thanks to all the hearts, ears, and arms who physically, mentally, and mostly emotionally support me along the way.
