  3. The San Jose Cementerio (also called the Cementerio San Jose or the San Jose Cemetery) was established in 1919 as a resting place for East Austin‘s Mexican and Mexican-American population. At the time, cemeteries were segregated, so Mexicans were not allowed to be buried in white cemeteries. Cementerio San Jose served the community through the 1950s. Since it sits on donated land and doesn’t fall under the jurisdiction of the Austin parks department for some reason, nobody is technically responsible for its upkeep. This resulted in the land becoming completely overgrown in the following decades. In the past few years, however, residents of the neighborhood and nonprofits have stepped up to maintain the land. If you’d like to get involved in conservation efforts, you can follow @sanjosecemeteryatx & @atxhispaniccemetery to stay updated on future cleanup days and events. If you end up visiting, please be respectful of the graves. Those buried here are people’s ancestors, and many of their descendants still live in Austin.
