Today my Republican colleagues pushed through their “Immigrant Hate” Bill to charge elected officials with a Class E felony for VOTING in favor of “sanctuary city” policies, requiring temporary residents to have a special mark on their ID cards, and creating a new unnecessary position of Chief Immigration Enforcement Officer within the Tennessee Department of Safety to streamline mass deportations in our state. This bill is not about addressing our broken system, but about stoking fear, division, and characterizing all immigrants as “criminals.” Despite testimony showing the human impact of this bill including a mother from a mixed status household, whose partner has been here for 20 years and continues to navigate the expensive and years long processes of legal immigration, my Republican colleagues came into the meeting with their minds made up. To further demonstrate their extremism, they had mothers, grandmothers, and clergy forcibly dragged out of the committee room by state troopers, even though they did not disrupt the committee. When the session was gaveled back in Chairman Chris Todd and Rep. Gino Bulso immediately called the vote without allowing Democratic representatives to ask a single question of the sponsor on the bill. As my Republican colleagues use their platforms to fear monger inside, they embolden those outside to engage in vigilantism and hate like the KKK distributing “Leave now, Self deport” flyers just yesterday in East Tennessee. This is a call and response from those in elected office who have used the red meat of racism to stoke hate groups into action to distract from their immoral policy agenda. This is fascism in action.
