  1. Detroit rapper and entrepreneur Icewear Vezzo returned to his childhood block on Sanford Street with City Council President Mary Sheffield to highlight the impact of Gracious Hands—a transitional housing facility operating out of the very home where Vezzo grew up with his nine siblings. @marysheffield @icewear_vezzo What once served as a family home is now a place of refuge and recovery for Detroiters experiencing homelessness, mental health struggles, or aging out of the foster care system. The facility, run by Vezzo’s family, is a grassroots effort to provide stability, dignity, and opportunity to those starting over. “My mom did 20 years of foster care out of this exact home,” Vezzo shared. “And you know, this idea was my brother’s, my mother’s, all of them. They started this without me. They didn’t need Icewear Vezzo’s influence or anything.” Gracious Hands offers more than just shelter—it supports residents in building independence and trust. “We assist with daily goals whether it be meal prep, grooming, money management, or helping them find a job,” shared one staff member. “We do everything they need to prepare them for the real world.” And in return they are respected and loved by the community by being actively on the pursuit of transformation. Vezzo added, “This house has provided a lot of jobs to a lot of people in the city of Detroit—whether they’re family or not.” Which enriches the unity and promotes positivity across the neighbors belonging to Sanford. As the group walked through the neighborhood, Council President Sheffield emphasized the importance of Detroit’s support for efforts like this. “The city should be supporting y’all,” she said, “whether it’s funding, or getting access to more homes to rehab.” One employee expressed hope that #Detroit will step in to expand the mission: “We’d love for the city to help us get these homes together, to [provide] more beds, and bring more awareness so we can get more facilities up and running.” In a city still healing from decades of systemic barriers, Gracious Hands is proof that transformation begins at home—sometimes, that home is the very one you grew up in.
