  2. WORK-LIFE BALANCE: HOW MUCH FOR YOUR STATE OF MIND? Over 3 years ago I resigned from a very decent position in a large corporate organisation, in favour of a lower paying job in a small practice. My reason for quitting was a strong desire for a better standard of living. Some may ask how a lower salary can mean a higher standard of living? Here’s how: 1. I got an hour a day of my life back: I was no longer stuck an hour long in traffic on my way to work, and equally long on my way back. This saves me over and hour each day! 2. I started living on purpose: I was desperate to get back into the creative field of architecture, which is what I do now. For a creative, being in corporate can be a soul crushing experience. 3. I now manage my own time: My previous job was an inflexible 8 to 5. My current job allows me to start and leave early to avoid traffic. More importantly for a person with a chronic illness: it allows me to work from home when I’m not well (which can sometimes be for weeks at a time). 4. I get more life done: The location of my previous job was way out of town - socialising after work was something I paid for in fatigue the following day. Running errands was an activity restricted to weekends. My current job, almost smack bang in the center of town makes socialising much easier and also means I get to run errands as and when. 5. I let go of the anger: whether it was the result of being stuck in traffic for hours morning and evening, dealing with the politics of corporate, or the overwhelming feeling that I was living a purposeless life; dissatisfaction can breed anger - mostly anger at yourself. I’m under no illusion on the importance of money. Money is definitely a factor in contributing to a higher standard of living.
