#reels #reelsvideo #reelsinstagram

  1. All praise is due to the Almighty, who has enabled me to complete a Master of Laws from @harvardlaw . When I left my full-time job in a shrinking human rights sector to pursue a second master’s degree, some questioned the decision — and part of me knew it was economically reckless. But as a practitioner from the Global South, I had grown increasingly disgruntled with the way human rights orgs reproduced colonial hierarchies of knowledge: where thematic expertise remains the exclusive preserve of Euro-American colleagues, while those coming from the peripheries (such as myself) are only valued for the parochiality of their ‘lived experience’. So I undertook this degree largely to challenge that asymmetry — by mastering the very doctrinal frameworks I was so often excluded from interpreting: from the fragile foundations of public international law to the shifting frontiers of climate change, human rights, and modern warfare. The goal was to speak not just from the margins, but to reclaim interpretive authority on equal terms. To study international law with such a lofty ambition at a moment it is being rendered hollow — and in a country that routinely defies its authority — may seem triply naïve. Yet there is a unique utility in defending a legal order precisely at a time and place where it is most contested. The only thing more dangerous than a collapsing system is the conviction that nothing better can take its place. The @harvard motto - Veritas - gestures towards a singular truth. But truth is seldom singular and it is hardly ever neutral. So I came to read Veritas not as a mission statement, but as a warning. The task was not to discover a truth but to ask: which truths are amplified, and which are buried? Which truths serve power, and which expose it? And what role does law play in shaping that distinction? If studying criminology at Oxford taught me to doubt the moral authority of law, interrogating legality at Harvard pushed me to reconceptualise law — in its barest form — as a continuous site of struggle, refusal, and possibility. Here’s to dwelling in doubt, disrupting hierarchies and pushing the boundaries of what the law deems possible.

  3. “Women should not study law. You’re only going to distract the male students.” That’s what the head of one of the oldest law colleges in Pakistan told a young Bengali woman who had the audacity to dream of becoming a lawyer at a time when women were systematically excluded from the legal profession. Defying overwhelming odds, she realised that dream—and went on to become one of the most formidable human rights lawyers in South Asia and the world, including becoming the UN’s first Special Rapporteur on Trafficking in Persons. Her name was Sigma Huda. One year ago today, while Bangladesh was under a total communication blackout and curfew, she quietly passed away on her hospital bed. Sigma didn’t just shatter the proverbial glass ceiling. She made sure it could never be rebuilt. How did she do so? She fought to become the first woman admitted to her law school and went on to become the first female partner of a law firm in Bangladesh and led the International Federation of Women Lawyers. She founded and led numerous NGOs advancing the rights of women and children. She represented Bangladesh at the UN in 1978, contributing to the drafting of CEDAW, the first global treaty on women’s rights. As UN Special Rapporteur, she led heated bilateral negotiations with governments across the Middle East, Asia, and Africa, to penalise powerful sex traffickers instead of the victims they trafficked. She was among the first to call out the legality of marital rape on national tv and international forums. She led the first case in Bangladesh to grant guardianship rights for divorced mothers and then she used that precedent to win similar cases for others. Sigma took on taboo issues and faced fierce backlash. In an era with no social media, no hashtags, and no viral campaigns, speaking out meant standing alone, and she did, again and again. Yet as a society, we’re often the first to chastise women when we feel they have erred but the last to celebrate them when they do groundbreaking things. Here’s to ending that double standard. Thank you, Sigma Huda, for each case you won, every law you reformed, and every door you opened for those who came after.
