  1. Bodies are shaped not only by exercise but also by the ways we learn to look at them. Beauty has never been a fixed ideal — it shifts with time, culture, and context. For ancient Greeks, temples were built as spaces to honor the gods, but they also stood as monuments to human order, balance, and aspiration. Today’s gyms serve as temples of the body, where ideals of strength and discipline are pursued, repeated, and displayed. In these spaces, training is more than exercise — it becomes a way of enacting collective beliefs. Western societies project their values onto the body, making physical training a cultural ritual. This exhibition is part of the opening of the new multifunctional sports center in Gargždai, Lithuania. I’m very glad to see such modern sports centers being built in smaller towns, contributing to the decentralization of sports, cultural, and social life in this country. Especially interesting is to show this work in a sports context rather than a traditional art space. Thank you, Toma, Vaidas, and Matas, for this invitation and highly professional attitude. The Western ideal of beauty — athletic, harmonious, and balanced — can be traced back to ancient Greece, where sculpture celebrated the human form as a symbol of both physical and moral excellence. That legacy, carried through Roman copies and embedded in classical art education, continues to shape how we see and depict bodies today. Weightlifting and drawing — both involve repetition, precision, and the constant effort to improve. The gym equipment I built was fully functional, serving both as exercise machines and as sculptural models for drawing. The space simultaneously became a gym and a studio, inviting both athletes and students into an exhibition to engage with physical training and drawing in a new context. The installation, throughout its entire duration, was activated by gym @re.formatas and students of @ciurlioniomenumokykla. This project was rooted in my own experience at the M. K. Čiurlionis School of Art in Vilnius, where I was trained in classical methods that emphasized drawing from life and mastering traditional techniques. Revisiting that past, I included my own pieces from my student years — portraits of my classmates, school works, and copies of the plaster models used for academic drawing. These included replicas of iconic sculptures like David, Apollo Belvedere, or Zeus — long-standing symbols of beauty and discipline.
