  1. 2019. I tend to be exacting in what I consider the word “good” to mean. As a photographer, one works and develops to the point where a quality photograph is a norm. Forreal good is so rare, that great is hard to conceptualize. In my mind it is something out of grasp one reaches for. Without that, how can one ever attain it? There is certainly joy in the process, the engagement, the therapy, the drug that is flow in shooting street, but objectivity outside of oneself and how one “feels” is the most difficult hurdle to overcome. Doing everything “right” is not enough because the parameters might not be “enough”- the ingredients. There is a satisfaction in making those shots regardless, as there should be. This year I made 8 good shots. The 9th and 10th are honestly interchangeable with my 40th best shot. I hope these words don’t come off as arrogant in that the point of it is that it is in this elevated striving that the possibility of good or great can exist. Leaving shots on the cutting room floor is painful, but one must get used to it- it matters in the history of it all. The legends set the parameters of this game of street and for example when one goes to nyc and makes photos, one has to honor that. The bar is what it is. In my 20’s I read Magister Ludi by Herman Hesse. It left an imprint on me. I honestly post-Covid may be too old and worn and lacking in ability to be Master of the Game, but I can play and that is all I ever wanted. Truly It’s a worthwhile read. It’s not an endpoint, a place the ego demands, but about the interrelationships and interdependences of disciplines and institutions, as well as spirituality, and the work one does, the paths one follows. #ishotbaltimore #observecollective
