This tomato and strawberry pin cushion is a classic sewing tool that was most likely introduced in during the Victorian Era. 🍅 According to folklore, placing a tomato on the mantel of a new house guaranteed prosperity and repelled evil spirits (perhaps an offering to the Goddess of Nightshade?). We gave her the middle name Frances after our Angel in heaven, Susie Frances. My sister @ashleygrandinetti gave us the biggest gift possible by offering to carry this little bundle of joy over these last 9 months. Thank you Ashley and Steven for sacrificing so much to make this all possible… no words can possibly describe how we feel today. Sweet little Gracie … you are in for quite the ride!   3. It’s with great pride pleasure that Logan and I welcome Spencer Lucas! Spencer was born without complication at 5:44 PM weighing in at 9 lbs 12 oz. He has already taken in his first feed and is swaddled-up like a breakfast burrito while cooing and creaking like the floorboards in our old house ready for a little sleep-sleep. Spencer was carried by a surrogate; a new friend of ours named Victoria. @toriajade17 It goes without saying how eternally thankful we are to her and her family for bestowing this blessing from God unto us. Over the last two years of our surrogacy journey, Victoria has been nothing but flexible, transparent, honest, and gracious. As I sit here in the hospital, starring at my new child with laser-like focus, I am still vexed by the staggering generosity of her nature. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for carrying, growing, and delivering (like a champ) our child and doing so with such grace. We look forward to travelling home to Kamloops in the next couple of days and sharing our son with all the special people in our lives!

I see the weight of years, the layers of everything it has witnessed—the cracks, the stains, the places where the paint has peeled, telling stories that are just faded memories. It’s a blank canvas that’s lost its color, too tired to keep pretending. Umma used to tell me that if I didn’t go to bed, Baba Doomba would come for me. A clever way to get your child to sleep—scaring them with a murderer who collects the heads of children. I’d listen in fear, clutching her tightly and squeezing my eyes shut as hard as I could. I wish she would just tell me about the boogey man instead, not this Doomba guy. I’d drift off in her arms, a feeling hard to put into words—safe, untouchable, like nothing in the world could harm me in that warm, secure space. If she wasn’t there I would stare at the ceiling, waiting for sleep to find me. It always seemed like a slow process when I was a child; I just wanted to stay awake forever, never wanting to surrender to the quiet dark. Bed times seemed cruel, but come morning and I’ll curse you for yanking my blanket off. The ceiling, just a dull, lifeless expanse of white, nothing special. In the silence, I begin to hear it—a faint electronic hum in the distance, like a vending machine and then that beep. That fucking beep. BEEP. It’s a cruel thing to see before sleep. A ceiling. A ceiling which could be the last thing you look at before you never wake up again. The sterile, indifferent ceiling of a hospital room. The sound of your name, desperately called out in the background. That goddamn beep. BEEP. There it goes again, and I open my eyes. Time to wake up. I drag my feet over the cold floor. I need a carpet I think to myself. Another trivial thought to keep me up at night.
