  1. .. .. TOMMY MILLIONS IS DEAD .. A bit dramatic sorry mum, but what do they say? If it bleeds, it leads?? .. This is a post you don’t really think about writing when you start a business, but here we are… .. It’s time to announce that we will soon be closing Tommy Millions, permanently .. The jig is up, the horse has bolted, the lady has sung, the bell is rung. .. It would be easy and convenient to point to the obvious bogeyman as the reason. And sure, that has changed the game, but it’s not why we’re closing. This is a deliberate decision to call TIME on a business that has quite literally been my life for the past decade. .. To go into all of the reasons would take ages and pages so I won’t attempt that here, maybe one day. For now, I’ll just say that every journey has an arc; a beginning and an end. Everything is impermanent, change the only constant, blah blah blah… .. We’ve had an awesome run with Tommy’s. We’re, like, 200 in Restaurant Years. We feel proud of our successes and grateful for the lessons of the (many) missteps. We want to end on a high note .. We’ve fed countless hungry bellies, given many young’ns their first job, helped others into their own pizza businesses & careers, bought life to a dead street corner, and more… .. Running a small business is never just “Set & Forget”. Like any relationship, you must wake up each day and recommit to the good, the bad and the ugly. And now it’s time to commit to the next adventure. .. The plan is to keep the ovens on until near the end of March, then a little renovating to get the Kiosk ready for its next chapter. (HINT – if you have an older sibling, and got to move into their nice big bedroom when they left home, you’ll know how excited our “little sister” is…she’s so lucky) .. Thank you to all the staff who have donned the apron, and to all of you for letting me live out the dream that started at Coney Island, way back in 2007, over Totonno’s & Coronas. .. So long, and thanks for all the slices. There’s still time for a few more… .. LONG LIVE TOMMY MILLIONS

  2. .. .. PERSONAL, NOT PIZZA, SORRY! .. Pardon me using this channel to talk about sport, but I promised myself one self indulgent post if I could stay away from the 🍻 for three months AND conquer my secret running goal! .. Today was gunna be my first ever running race (since Taradale High cross country, at least). I’ve always been a runner, but always too scared to enter races…. scared of failing to finish, of getting smoked by young guns, of a windy Wellington day, or especially a Code Brown (not unreasonable) .. I finally but that dumb sh*t aside and signed up for the Wellington Half Marathon this year. Of course, it got Covid Cancelled a couple days ago (**cue Alanis Morissette**) but I decided to run that thang anyway .. And waddayaknow, managed to beat my public goal (90min) and my secret goal (88mins… you know, the one you don’t tell anyone else about 😉) .. It’s hard to describe how much 🏃‍♂️ does for me. It’s my meditation and release valve. I hate to think the state my life would be in without it, especially this year, my toughest so far .. It’s not exactly groundbreaking to come out as a hospo worker, or business owner, who struggles with their mental health. Depression/ anxiety/ addiction, and more are endemic in our industry. I have my own battles, but also see and share the pain that so many of my young staff go through .. It’s complicated and I don’t have the answers (though I hope to work in the field in the future), but I do know that talking more openly about #mentalhealth, and finding your own version of what running is to me, whatever that may be, are helpful starting points .. It feels good to put yourself to the test. I am proud that this old thing can still move, despite 5x knee operations and 2x fractured vertebrae. I’m proud of myself .. And btw, I’m down to run with anyone, anytime, so if you’re going through a rough patch, get in my DMs .. xx Tommy .. #runforyourlife @graverunners @mhfnz #worldmentalhealthday
