  2. Traveling at 167mph going into turn 2 at Laguna Seca I had the front wing failure: the wing-mount upper-bolts sheared from a large aero oscillation. This oscillation was introduced to the front wing assembly moments earlier by a flap insert pulling out of the wing element on the right hand side, making that flap unstable. The detached front wing assembly goes under the car, and those same front wing mounts act as a ramp to the underside of the tub, pitching the nose up and exposing the large flat floor to the airflow at a lift inducing angle of attack. I was in the air for about 2 seconds, rotating nose up over 90 degrees. GPS indicated we traveled about a football field in this time, although we lost most gps satellites with the car inverted, so not the most accurate data. I hit the tyre wall at about 65mph. The damage was done to me from the slam down landing. All the safety gear was top notch, in date FIA, correctly installed, belts tight. It’s an example of how much your body can move in a high-G accident, so please use this as an example of how important it is to set up your cockpit or safety-cell cleanly. Buy the best safety kit you can afford and read manufacturer guidelines for installation. I’ve been a Technical Director as well as a Scrutineer for race series, as well as working on several OE crash programs. It takes everything to be right to be able to hobble away from a crash like this. And there is still opportunity for improvement with safety - which we already see in more modern race cars. Accidents happen, sometimes we get lucky, sometimes we don’t. All we can do is make smart choices and stack the deck in our favour with great safety systems. That’s why I get to live to race another day ✌️
