It’s wild how many stories your mind tells you out there. One minute I’m eyeing the bailer bus thinking, “Maybe I’ll fake an injury.” Then it’s, “I’ll just slow down, find some friends at the back and walk-jog it in.” But then… the energy of the crowd, the support, the belief from complete strangers and my friends, it pulled me back. Reminded me that I can do hard things. Then I started passing people… and that competitive fire switched back on. I pushed. I hurt. But I kept going, whispering to myself: Fernie, you got this. Yes, it still stings not getting the time I was after. Maybe third time’s the charm? 😅 But I’m proud. I didn’t let myself down. This sport - this incredibly selfish sport - do it for me. But even the most solo of sports isn’t done alone. The support, the cheers, the friends on the road and waiting at the finish - it means everything. Seeing my people achieve, suffer, overcome… it’s magic. That’s what makes this day what it is. To every one of you who showed up for yourselves, for others, I’m so proud of you.
