  1. Friends, the feeling of belonging is fascinating. I’ve had moments where I’m with people and I feel so at home. I’ve had moments when I’m with the exact same people and feel distant, strange, alone, unseen and like I don’t belong. We can only be at home with others to the degree that we are at home within ourselves. Over the years I’ve learned that the sense of authentic belonging has many parallels to the spiritual path. And there is a difference between fitting in and belonging. When you truly belong you don’t have to change who you are. And yet paradoxically it’s in these kinds of encounters that a true transformation takes places. When you truly meet someone, even briefly, you can’t go back to being the same person you were before the encounter. In these moments, you’ve also met yourself deeply. What I have found lately is that I feel most at home with other true lovers on the path. Love requires courage. To speak one’s truth by telling all of one’s heart. Courage is a quality of a heart that comes when the heart is cleansed and purified of false and imitation love. The shadow of belonging is that there are many invitations to abandon self for approval, validation and “safety”. When you show up authentically you lose people but others are even more drawn to the true you. That doesn’t mean this part isn’t painful. But a true lover uses heartbreak to grow more in love. I often say I’m not committed to people I’m committed to love. All of my vows are to love itself. Many people are still operating in the paradigm that love means you belong to me. This is based on unconscious agreements to trade freedom for belonging. This is why I say true divine union is within and is not about someone outside. This is often referred to as the Mystical Marriage with the Divine. For me, I belong to and at home with the Beloved and everyone else is a companion on the path. As the Sufis say, remember the one to who you belong until you forget yourself. This weekend is our in person Mystical Love Languages event where we explore themes of belonging, divine union, love and the purification of the heart through mystical rose medicine. Looking forward. ❤️🌹✨

  2. This tweet from 2016 still feels so relevant. Many of us know exactly what it feels like to not be seen or heard. To have our feelings invalidated. To have that invalidation become so extensive we begin to invalidate ourselves. We may begin to dismiss things we feel, ignore intuition, tell ourselves to get over things and to silence our inner knowings. But the more you become conscious, awake, aware and attuned, the more you notice how many people are not. You will notice exactly where people are stuck or blocked. You may feel it’s your job to help them or you may just want to completely separate yourself. When we understand energetically why people operate the way they do, that doesn’t means its an excuse for their behavior. It’s an explanation of the energy dynamic that we can use to find our own integrity and boundaries. Energy work is the practice of personal responsibility that asks what can I do even if this other person is not willing to change. We do the work on ourselves instead to shift how we relate to life. This is why one of my favorite energy healing techniques is releasing resistance to other peoples resistance. Its about not getting stuck on the fact that some people will choose to stay stuck, unconscious or blocked regarding the things that could actually help or empower them. Walking our path requires getting to the place where you feel comfortable being misunderstood. We begin to focus more on embodying our medicine than on popularity contests. Because our truth and our medicine can be something very polarizing or triggering to others. Many times the exact thing we are here to embody and share can come with rejection, isolation and not fitting in. My energy isn’t for everyone. And that’s intentional. Join us at @newearthmysteryschool this month for Knowing your Medicine! We will be discussing the journey of certain women from the classical mystical traditions of Sufism, Buddhism and Christianity. This series will include a poetry writing workshop with our guest @sukina_pilgrim We will be writing poetry on this theme of being comfortable being misunderstood and the trials that come with owning our choice to embody our own truth.

  3. Collective fam, I’m seeing people talking about how it’s time to stop worshiping gurus and celebrities. And while I think that may be relevant for some people, for many of us, we’ve never worshiped celebrities or gurus. I was raised to never put anyone on a pedestal, never put anyone above me or below me. To see everyone as equal. To recognize everyone has consciousness within them and that this consciousness all comes from the same source. Regardless of how people may be acting out from a belief in separation. The spell of separation is ultimately at the heart of what is unfolding right now. To me, the way spirituality is being spun in this current time is one of the biggest distortions out there. Because spirituality, as i understand it is a recognition that everything is interconnected. People can fall so deeply asleep in unconsciousness, or unremembering, that they become sick, ill, unwell. And that unwellness is not something we are disconnected from. We are all in relationship with it. There have always been forces attempting to distort consciousness. And that distortion manifests as the most deviant outcomes possible, targeting the most innocent and sacred among us, which are the children. It’s very convenient to have manifestations of pure evil in front of us that trigger the impulse to say, “See, I told you. I knew. I never liked Deepak Chopra.” And by the way, I never liked that guy either but that’s not the point. The point is how do we use everything showing up as a recommitment to showing up in ways that actually matter? When I first went down certain rabbit holes about 15 + years ago I started seeing some of the things that are now coming to light now I nearly had a nervous breakdown. The darkness was overwhelming, disorienting and isolating because there weren’t many you could talk to about what you were seeing. So yes the outrage is valid. And also, we still have a lot of work to do. I really want to encourage people to put as much time and focus into the work as possible, because the new reality isn’t going to build itself. The same way we are impacted by the sickness, because we are not separate, what we heal in ourselves also ripples out

  1. This week, I got test results back for one of my patients, a young woman in her 20s who I met last summer. She hadn’t seen a doctor in years, but she felt fine and just wanted a regular checkup. I learned that she smoked cigarettes and had a family history of type 2 diabetes. . I went over our allotted appointment time (yup, a bad habit of mine 🙃) talking about lifestyle changes to help her get healthier & prevent diabetes, especially quitting smoking and moving towards a plant-based diet. . Her initial bloodwork showed a very elevated blood sugar (hemoglobin A1c near 9.0%) and I diagnosed her with type 2 diabetes. I explained that she would almost certainly be able to improve, and possibly even reverse, her type 2 diabetes by adopting a healthful plant-based diet and becoming more physically active. . I offered her the choice of lifestyle changes, medicines, or a combination of the two, depending on how much she thought she could change. She said she was motivated to eat differently and wanted to try that first. . Fast forward 8 months. She quit smoking. She started working out. And it took her some time, but she adopted a completely plant-based diet. This week her hemoglobin A1c came back below 7.0%, almost out of the type 2 diabetes range. (All this while eating sweet potatoes, fruits, oatmeal, brown rice, quinoa, and beans…plus of course lots of veggies.) . Moments like this are why I went to med school. It isn’t the most dramatic transformation story in terms of the numbers. But it’s dramatic in terms of the fact that many doctors and patients don’t even know that something like this is possible. . I am a primary care doctor seeing patients from all walks of life. Very few of them know before they meet me how passionate I am about nutrition. They just think they’re seeing a “regular” doctor. I love giving people a chance to change. To me, it’s not diet vs medications -- it’s a dialog and a relationship, and seeing what’s right for each individual person. But few people escape my office without a conversation about food, because it’s so fundamental to health. . On this #nationaldoctorsday, here’s to more of us making that connection.

  3. I had the chance to lead two sessions on plant-based diets at the recent American Diabetes Association clinical meeting! To be honest, I wasn’t sure what to expect, but wow, the rooms were packed & there were tons of great questions. I was also thrilled to see quite a few fellow plant-based practitioners in the audience! . My 1st session was on plant-based diets for preventing & treating type 2 diabetes. It was a challenge to squeeze this into 45 mins because there is so much supporting evidence! My 2nd session was a workshop for clinicians to help their patients adopt a plant-based diet. For a recap of the science, read on 👇 . PREVENTION: Large observational studies in health-conscious populations show that vegetarians & vegans have approximately half the rate of diabetes as omnivores, even with statistical adjustments for differences in excess weight & other risk factors. And when followed over time, plant eaters experience up to a 62% lower risk of developing diabetes. . TREATMENT: Plant-based diets are remarkably effective. Randomized controlled trials have shown that a plant-based diet is superior to conventional diabetes diets - not just in terms of lowering blood sugar, but also cholesterol & excess weight. Moreover, plant-based diets significantly reduce the risk of heart disease, the #1 cause of death for people with diabetes. They’ve also been shown to decrease rates of premature death in people with kidney disease, and to ameliorate painful diabetic neuropathy! . HOW DOES IT WORK? Plant-based diets address the root causes of type 2 diabetes: insulin resistance & dysfunction of insulin-producing pancreatic beta cells. Both are related to the buildup of certain types of fats in our muscle, liver, & pancreas cells; this can happen when we carry excess weight, eat too many calories, eat a high-fat diet, and/or have chronic inflammation. Plant-based diets are rich in fiber, antioxidants, & micronutrients, and low or absent in saturated fat, animal protein, heme iron, advanced glycation endproducts, nitrosamines, & TMAO precursors - a potent combination that reduces fat buildup & helps restore insulin & beta-cell function. .
