Immediately following two days of rain a week ago, we had a mycological equivalent of a superbloom (super-shroom?) around the arboretum, including masses of these Inkcaps (consensus leaning toward Coprinopsis sp. as opposed to Coprinus) in our mulched beds. These are especially fun as the fruiting bodies quickly self-destruct in a dignified manner by digesting themselves into a black melty mess. While the environment is still saturated, enzymes are produced that disintegrate the cap into drippy stalactites of inky goo that contains the spores (which can be used as ink). The last photos of the skeletonized, sunset-silhouetted individuals were the late-risers that missed out on their one shot at deliquescence (fancy term for the auto-digestion trick), prevented by the rapid shift to dry ambient conditions.
